EULER, LEONHARD. - ON SPACE AND TIME.
Herman H. J. Lynge & Søn A/S
lyn46427
(Berlin, Haude et Spener, 1750). 4to. No wrappers, as issued in "Mémoires de l'Academie Royale des Sciences et Belles-Lettres", 1748, tome IV, Titlepage to the section. a. pp. 324-333. First appearance of this importent paper in which Euler defends Newton's conceptions of space and time against the thesis that space and time are ideal, and motions relative. He outlays his views on the relation between Metaphysics and Mechanics. The truths of mechanics are "so indubitably constant" that they must be founded in the natures of bodies. Metaphysics is the study of the nature of bodies, therefore the laws of Mechanics constrain Metaphysical theories. In fact, any Metaphysical idea or conclusion corresponding to a Mechanical one must agree in all its implications with Mechanics. This applies in particular to space and time. Real, absolute, space and time are assumed by the laws of Mechanics. Therefore, Metaphysical arguments for the unreality of space and time must be unfounded and "hide some parlogism".

Lancaster and New York, American Institute of Physics, 1956. Lex8vo. Volume 104, November 1, No. 3, 1956 of "The Physical Review", Second Series. In the original printed blue wrappers. A small stain to front wrapper, otherwise a very nice and clean copy. Pp. 975-980. [Entire issue: Pp. 933-1188]. First edition of the important paper in which the Bloch-Torrey equation is first described. H.C. Torrey showed mathematically how the Bloch equations, a set of macroscopic equations that are used to calculate the nuclear magnetization, would change with the addition of diffusion. Torrey modified Bloch's original description from 1946 of transverse magnetization to include diffusion terms and the application of a spatially varying gradient. Today the equation is used in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), a method that produces images of biological tissues weighted with the local micro-structural characteristics of water diffusion. Diffusion tensor MRI can provide information about connections among brain regions.
