lyn61956
Paris, Au bureau de la Bibliothèque Choisie, 1830. 8vo. Uniformly bound in two nice contemporary half calf bindings with four raised bands and gilt lettering and ornamentation to spine. Boards with scratches and loss of the marbled paper. Ex-libris pasted on to pasted down front end-papers. Internally with occassional light marginal brownspotting. 405, (2) pp.; 430, (2) pp. Later edition of this work, which in the 19th century was considered as one of the finest works dedicated to the science of man. “As a philosopher, Cabanis sought in medicine an instrument for the analysis of ideas, that is to say, for the reconstruction of their genesis. His fundamental philosophical work, Rapports du physique et du moral de l’homme, is presented as “simple physiological researches.”1 It is composed of twelve Mémoires (the first six of which were first read in the sessions of the Institute) collected in one volume in 1802. In this work Cabanis sets forth a psychology and an ethical system based on the necessary effects of an animal’s organization upon its relationships with its environment. Even the unlimited perfectibility of the human species, which renders it “capable of all things,” derives from the fact that “man is undoubtedly the most subject to the influence of exterior causes.”(DSB)

ØRSTED, H.C (OERSTED)
Herman H. J. Lynge & Søn A/S
lyn61799
Kjøbenhavn (Copenhagen), Bianco Luno, 1850. 8vo. Bound in a recent half calf binding. Scattered brownspots, otherwise internally clean. Printed on vellum-paper. X, 190, XII, 206 pp. First edition of Oersted's main work on natural philosophy. Oersted is universally known for his discovery of Electro-Magnetism in 1820. Afterwards he went on to write a number of important philosophical works on natural philosophy and empiricism, of which he considered "Aanden i Naturen" as his main work. The work is found printed on 2 sorts of paper, common- and vellum paper, the present copy being on vellum. Both Hans Christian Andersen and Søren Kierkegaard admit to having been influenced by the writings of Oersted. "He was an enthusiastic follower of the "Naturphilosophie" school in Germany, whose main object was the unification of physical forces, thus producing a monistic theory of the universe. It was to further this purpose that Oersted sought in actual phenomena the electro-magnetic identity of which he had already convinced himself on metaphysical grounds" (Percy H. Muir in Printing and The Mind of Man). The copy once belonged to the renowned Danish book collector Gustav Philipsen (1853-1925) and carries his exlibris.

New York, American Telephone and Telegraph Company, 1946. 8vo. Volume XXV, Number 2, April 1946 of "The Bell System Technical Journal". Entire volume offered. In the original printed blue wrappers. With previous owner's name to front wrapper. Sunning to spine and margins of front wrapper. Back wrapper loose. An overall nice and clean copy. Pp. (4), 167-349. First printing of Bell Labs Magnetron issue. The Magnetron is a high-powered vacuum tube that through a stream of electrons in a magnetic field generates microwaves. This reduced the size of radar sets which made it possible to install them in anti-submarine aircrafts and escort ships. This had a profound influence on the warfare during WWII. Today magnetrons are commonly used in microwave ovens and in various radar applications."The studies of Fisk, H. D. Hagstrum, and P. L. Hartman [the present paper] increased the understanding of the role that the various possible modes of oscillation played in magnetron operation and the effect of the wire straps - which later evolved into two pair of concentric copper rings." (Millman, S. A History of Engineering & Science in the Bell System, 1984, p. 173).

Frankfurt am Main, Klostermann, (1950). 8vo. Orig. full blue cloth w. gilt lettering to spine and front board. W. the orig. grey dust-jacket w. black lettering to spine and front board. D-j. w. some tears to top, w. very minor loss. ball-pen-underlining of the title on spine. (2), 345, (2) pp. First edition of "Off the Beaten Track", Heidegger's important collection of lectures given in the period 1935-46: "Der Ursprung des Kunstwerkes", "Die Zeit des Weltbildes", "Hegels Begriff der Erfahrung", "Nietzsche's Wort "Gott ist Tod" ", "Wozu Dichter?", "Der Spruch des Anaximander".In spite of the seemingly very different character of these six "Walks in the Woods", they all take place "in the same forest". Heidegger's philosophy of art is here presented thoroughly, and these texts have been the cause of a large number of secondary texts on this philosophical "branch" of the philosophy of Heidegger.

New York, American Telephone and Telegraph Company, 1950. 8vo. In the original printed blue wrappers. In "The Bell System Technical Journal", Volume XXIX, Number 1, January 1950. Light sunning to spine, otherwise a very fine and clean copy. Pp. 1-59. [Entire volume: Pp. 1-116]. First publication of Pierce's seminal and exceedingly influential paper on traveling-wave tube amplifiers. A Traveling-wave tube is an electronic device used to amplify radio frequency signals to high power. Even though the invention is widely contributed to Rudolf Kompfner in 1942-43, and Nils Lindenblad patented a device in 1940 similar to the traveling wave tube, is it Pierce that invented a fully functional and useable device."It was Pierce who exploited its [the Traveling-Wave Tube] great potential as a broadband ultrahigh frequency and microwave amplifier. Pierce's initial successes with the new amplifier and his theoretical analysis of the operation of the traveling wave principle provided stimulus for colleagues at Bell Labs and workers elsewhere to enter this field of research." (Millman, S. A History of Engineering & Science in the Bell System, 1984, p. 177).The first communication satellite the Telstar had not been able to send signals back to earth without Pierce' Traveling-Wave Tube. First appearance of Schrödinger's famous treatment of the Compton effect."Schrödinger approached the wave mechanical treatment of the Compton effect in his own paper [the present] on a far less technical level [than Gordon]. He practically went back to the optical analogies that had stimulated the whole development in November 1925, and in which the properties of microscopic particles were described by matter waves and their propagation in homogeneous media. From such consideration, he now - a year later - drew the following conclusion: "It is to be expected, nay, even demanded, that we should be able, by means of quite simple phase considerations…, to explain the connection between the changes in direction and frequency of the ether wave which occur in the Compton effect and the change of velocity of the electron." (Mehra, The Historical Development of Quantum Theory)"Compton was able to account for this (lenghtening of wavelenght) by presuming that a photon of light struch an electron, which recoiled, subtracting some energy from the photon and therefore increasing its wavelenght. This made it seem that a photon acted as a particle: thus after more than a century, the particulate natuer of light, as evolved by Newton, was revived... What itamounted to was that Compton brought to fruition the view that electromagnetic radiation had both a wave aspect and a particle aspect, and that the aspect which was most evident depended on how the radiation was tested. De Broglie was, at the same time, showing that this held true also for ordinary particles, such as electrons." (Asimov)
