Leipzig, Johann Ambrosius Barth, 1829. Without wrappers as issued in "Annalen der Physik und Chemie. Hrsg.von Poggendorff", Bd. 16, Siebentes Stück. (2) + pp., 1 folded engraved plate. Entire issue offered with titlepage to volume 16. Berzelius's paper: pp. 387-415. Clean and fine. First German printing - printed simultaneously with the English and Swedish version - of the paper in which Berzelius described his discovery of Thorium, the first element after Uranium to be identified as such. In 1829, Jöns Jakob Berzelius of the Royal Karolinska Institute, Stockholm extracted thorium from a rock specimen sent to him by an amateur mineralogist who had discovered it near Brevig and realised that it had not previously been reported. The mineral turned out to be thorium silicate, and it is now known as thorite. Berzelius even produced a sample of metallic thorium by heating thorium fluoride with potassium, and confirmed it as a new metal. He called the black mineral thorite, in honor of the Scandinavian god Thor.Parkinson "Breakthroughs", 1829 C.

Hag. Com." (Dibdin II:475).

First appearance of Born and Fock's important paper in which they introduced their adiabatic theorem, a concept in quantum mechanics which they stated as follows: " A physical system remains in its instantaneous eigenstate if a given perturbation is acting on it slowly enough and if there is a gap between the eigenvalue and the rest of the Hamiltonian's spectrum." (From the present paper). The concept of this theorem deals with the time-dependent Hamiltonian - a subject of Quantum dynamics - where the Hamiltonian changes with time.The present issue also contain Gamow's "Zur Quantentheorie des Atomkernes" containing the first direct calculation of the Geiger-Nuttall law.

First apperance of this importent paper in which Varignon describes the function and theory behing his invention of the manometer, a term which he coined in this paper. 'Manometre' from Greek (manos + metron) = sparce measure.Stitched together is another importent paper JOSEPH TOURNEFORT "Observations sur les Maladies des Plantes", pp. 332-345 in which he made the first classification of plant diseases.

Marin Cureau de La Chambre (1594-1669) was a French physician and philosopher, serving as a counselor and physician to Louis XIV.

Armstrong is noteworthy as the founder of the first children's dispensary in Europe and as the author of one of the best paediatric works of the period.

First appearance of a historical paper in physiscs.This paper is the last of Faraday's papers in the series "Experimental researches in electricity". The paper is the only one of the 30 papers which was not reprinted in the 3 volume work, published 1856.From 1831 to 1852 Michael Faraday published his "Experimental Researches in Electricity" in The Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society. These papers contain not only an impressive series of experimental discoveries, but also a collection of heterodox theoretical concepts on the nature of these phenomena expressed in terms of lines of forces and fields. He published 30 papers in all under this general title.They represents Faraday's most importent work, are classics in both chemistry and physics and are the experimental foundations for Maxwell's electro-magnetic theory of light, using Faraday's concepts of lines of force or tubes of magnetic and electrical forces. A few years later, Fredholm's theory of integral equations enabled him to solve all these problems; it is likely that Poincareé's papers had a decisive influence on the development of Fredholm's method, in particular the idea of introducing a variable complex parameter in the integral equation. It should also be mentioned that Fredholm's determinants were directly inspired by the theory of "infinite determinants" of H. von Koch, which itself was a development of much earlier results of Poincaré in connection with the solution of linear differential equations."
