LAVERAN, A. (ALPHONSE). - THE AGENT OF MALARIA FOUND.
Herman H. J. Lynge & Søn A/S
lyn51114
(Paris, Gauthier-Villars), 1881. 4to. No wrappers. In: "Comptes Rendus Hebdomadaires des Séances de L'Academie des Sciences", Tome 93, No 17. Pp. (613-) 654 (entire issue offered). Laveran's paper: pp. 627-630. First printing of the paper in which Laveran - in detail - described the agents responsible for malaria - the discovery was first announced in a small note in "Bulletin de l’Académie de Médecine". On November 6th, 1880, while examining the blood of a patient, without any staining and using a x40 objective, he saw for the first time a number of filiform elements, flagellum-like, which moved with great vivacity around a pigmented, spherical body. Seventeen days after the discovery Laveran sent a note describing his discovery to the National Academy of Medicine of France. This discovery was exemplary in the simplicity of the means used and by the fact that Laveran's work went against all the theories then accepted by the greatest scholars of the time. Laveran was awarded the Nobel Prize in Medicine (1907) for the discovery of the agent of malaria. The offered issue contains another interesting paper ALEXANDER GRAHAM BELL "Sur un appareil permettant de déterminer, sans douleur pour le patient, la position d'un projectile de plomb ou d'autre métal dans le corps humain.", pp. 625-627 with 2 illustrations showing the electrical apparatus by which Bell tried to detect the bullit which murdered president Garfield. This is the first description of Bell's invention.

lyn46007
(London, W. Bulmer and Co., 1814). 4to. No wrappers as extracted from "Philosophical Transactions" 1814 - Part II. Pp. 557-570. First printing of this importent paper in which Davy "finally put it beyond doubt that carbon and diamond were chemically identical; that neither all acids nor all alkalies contained oxygen; and that oxygen enjoyed no unique status as the supporter of combustion, but rather that heat was a consequence of any violent chemical change."(DSB)."In Florence he (Davy) burnt a diamond in oxygen, using the burning glass of the Accademia del Cimento, and foundthat it has the same composition as pure charcoal. He found that a diamond ignited in oxygen by a burning glass continued to burn when the source of external heating is removed, and only carbonic acid gas and no moisture was formed."(Partington IV:p. 61).

Leipzig, B. G. Teubner, 1876. 8vo. Bound in recent full black cloth with gilt lettering to spine. In "Mathematische Annalen", Volume 9., 1876. Entire volume offered. Library label pasted on to pasted down front free end-paper. Small library stamp to lower part of title title page and verso of title page. Very fine and clean. Pp.163-165 [Entire volume: IV, 575 pp.]. First printing of Lüroth's Theorem, a celebrated case of rational variety within algebraic variety. "In 1876 he demonstrated the "Lueroth theorem", whereby each uni-rational curve in rational-Castelnuovo in 1895 proved the analogous but more difficul theorem for surfaces" (DSB).Lüroth's problem concerns subextensions L of K(X), the rational functions in the single indeterminate X. Any such field is either equal to K or is also rational, i.e. L = K(F) for some rational function F. In geometrical terms this states that a non-constant rational map from the projective line to a curve C can only occur when C also has genus 0. That fact can be read off geometrically from the Riemann-Hurwitz formula."In addition, Lueroth worked in other areas of mathematics far removed from algebraic geometry. He obtained partial proof of the topological in variance of dimension (proved in 1911 by L. Brouwer) and, following the work of Staudt, did research in complex geometry. He was also involved in the logical researches of his friend Schroder and published two books in applied mathematics and mechanics. These were Grundriss der Meclumik, in which he used the vector calculus for the first time* and Vorlesungen Uber immerisches Rechnen. Lueroth collaborated in editing the collected works of Hesse and Grassmann." (DSB)

With 7 large folded engraved plates (antomy and physiology). First appearance of du Verneys rather famous description and dissection of two children linked together by the lower abdomen and lacking an anus.Jacques du Verney was "medicin ordinaire du roi". During a conference open to the public he exhibited a "monstre double" to a crowd of Parisians and provincials in order to refute the fortuitous and haphazard accidentalist theories...According to Verney, the very form of this monster leaves little doubt as to God'øs agency in nature...the monstrous fetus are read as a sign of celestial "Telos". (Based on "The Faces of Eighteent-Century Monstroisity).Together with LEMERY: Que les Plantes contiennent réellement du fer, & que ce metal entre necessairement dans leur composition naturelle. Pp. 411-418 and 2 large folded engraved plates.
