KILLING, WILHELM.

Leipzig, B.G. Teubner, 1888. 8vo. Original printed wrappers, no backstrip. In "Mathematische Annalen. Begründet 1888 durch Rudolf Friedrich Alfred Clebsch. XXXIII. [33] Band. 1. Heft." Entire issue offered. Wrappers with a few nicks, internally fine and clean. [Killing:] Pp. 1-48. [Entire issue: Pp. IV,160 pp]. First publication of Killing's seminal paper in which he laid the foundation of a structure theory for Lie algebras."In particular he classified all the simple Lie algebras. His method was to associate with each simple Lie algebra a geometric structure known as a root system. He used linear transformation, to study and classify root systems, and then derived the structure of the corresponding Lie algebra from that of the root system."(Companion Encyclopedia of the History and Philosophy of the Mathematical Sciences)Unfortunately for Killing a myth arose that his work was riddled with error, which later has been proved untrue. "As a result, many key concepts that are actually due to Killing bear names of later mathematicians, including "Cartan subalgebra", "Cartan matrix" and "Weyl group". As mathematician A. J. Coleman says, "He exhibited the characteristic equation of the Weyl group when Weyl was 3 years old and listed the orders of the Coxeter transformation 19 years before Coxeter was born."The theory of Lie groups, after the Norwegian mathematician Sophus Lie, is a structure having both algebraic and topological properties, the two being related.

The plate with a dampstain., otherwise clean and fine. First appearance of an importent paper in which both Joule and Lord Kelvin publish some thermo-dynamical results in connection with heat developed by air and mechanical work as further proofs of the conservation of energy.Joule is well known for his discovery of Joule's Law, the connection between heat and mechanical work, where heat is a form of energy. "In December of 1840 he presented a paper to the Royal Society on the production of heat by the electric current. His course of thought led him to the consideration of the relatio between heat and and mechanical work. The results of his investigations were embodied in a series of papers which culminated in his great memoir on the mechanical equivalent of heat, published in 1850. Joule was one of the founders of the principle of the cosservation of energy. Some of his work was done in collaboration with Lord Kelvin."(Source Book in Physics p. 203).

BROGLIE, LOUIS de.

lyn48009
Paris, Gauthier-Villars, 1956. Royal8vo. Uncut in the original printed wrappers. Fine and clean. VII, (1), 297, (2) pp. First printing of de Broglie's important work on nonlinear wave mechanics. "The early 1950s again witnessed a major change in de Broglie’s views. Impressed by the nonlocal theory put forth by David Bohm in 1951, which reintroduced pilot-waves, de Broglie turned back to his first theoretical convictions. Surrounded by some faithful followers, de Broglie resumed his quest for a causal interpretation, this time supplementing his initial views with the idea of nonlinear dynamics for the singular wave. This was, however, increasingly perceived as a marginal research program, even in his own country, where quantum theoreticians preferred to stick to more mainstream physics, less fundamental and closer to the wealth of new experimental data emerging in the 1950s." Berlin, Springer, 1928. 8vo. In "Zeitschrift für Physik" bd. 47. Entire volume offered. In contemporary half cloth with marbled boards. Library stamp to front free end-paper. A fine and clean copy. Pp. 151-173. [Entire volume: VII, (1), 914 pp.]. First printing of this significant paper. "Following Dirac's precedent, Jordan, Heisenberg, and Pauli developed the relativistic quantum electrodynamics. This theory occupied physicists for a good twenty years before it became clear that, in spite of all the doubts and disappointments, one of the most precise physical theories had been discovered." (DSB)"It was evident from the beginning that a proper quantum treatment of the electromagnetic field had to somehow incorporate Einstein's relativity theory, which had grown out of the study of classical electromagnetism. This need to put together relativity and quantum mechanics was the second major motivation in the development of quantum field theory.Pascual Jordan and Wolfgang Pauli showed in 1928 that quantum fields could be made to behave in the way predicted by special relativity during coordinate transformations".

Regnault's paper: pp. 676-687. A few marginal brownspots. First apperance of this very importent paper where Regnault declared his acceptance of the conservation of energy."Speculation and discussions of theory are noticeably absent from Regnault’s published work, as they are from his surviving notebooks. But in 1853 he declared his acceptance of the principle of the conservation of energy; and later he measured the mechanical equivalent of heat, although with only moderate success. In declaring his support for the principle, Regnault stated that he had subscribed to the mechanical theory of heat “for a long time” and that he had been led to it independently through his own experiments "Comptes rendus... de AcademiE des sciences..." (The paper offered). "(DSB).Roberts & Trent "Bibliotheca Mechanica", p. 275.
