First publication of the influential paper in which the Brans-Dicke theory of gravitation, a theoretical framework to explain gravitation, is presented for the first time. The theory is probably the most famous contestor to Einstein's general theory of relativity. "The best motivated, least complicated, and relatively most viable among the alternatives to general relativity is probably the scalar-tensor theory of gravitation proposed in 1961 by Carl Brans and Robert Dicke" (Jammer, Max, Concepts of mass in contemporary physics and philosophy, 2000, p. 136).

Because of those qualities, his courses exerted a decisive influence on more than a generation of French theoretical physicists..... It seems to me certain that he would have developed the special theory of relativity if that had not been done elsewhere, for he had clearly recognized its essential points."

FARADAY, (MICHAEL). - ON THE DISCOVERY OF ELECTOMAGNETIC INDUCTION.
Herman H. J. Lynge & Søn A/S
lyn48329
(Paris, Crochard, 1832). No wrappers. In: "Annales de Chimie et de Physique", 2e Series, vol. 51, Cahier 4. Pp. 337-444 (Entire issue offered). Faraday's letter: pp. 404-434 a. 1 engraved plate. Some brownspots. First printing of Faraday's famous letter to Gay-Lussac in which he claim to be the discoverer of electro-magnetic induction, analysed the results of the Italian philosophers, pointing out their errors, and defending himself from what he regarded as imputations on his character. The style of this letter is unexceptionable, for Faraday could not write otherwise than as a gentleman; but the letter shows that had he willed it he could have hit hard. The letter was later translated into English and published in "Philosophical Magazine" in 1840 under the title "On Magneto-electric Induction"."In 1831, seemingly out of nowhere, came the discovery of electromagnetic induction and the beginning of the experimental researches in electricity which were to lead Faraday to the discovery of the laws of electrochemistry, specific inductive capacity, the Faraday effect, and the foundations of classical field theory." (DSB).

Kjøbenhavn, Bianco Luno, 1872. 4to. Bound with the original printed wrappers in a recent cardboard-binding. In "Videnskabernes Selskabs Skrifter" Nat.Vid. og Math. Afd. Femte Række, Bd.5, 10. Bd.:1. 171, (1), L pp. + 11 plates. Rare first edition of Warming’s pricewinning work which stands as one of the earliest and most significant contributions to the study of plant morphology in Denmark. Submitted as his doctoral dissertation at the University of Copenhagen, this work laid the groundwork for Warming’s later, more famous contributions to ecology and plant geography. Yet, in its own right, “Forgreningsforhold” is a highly influential study that reflects the scientific rigor of a botanist ahead of his time.In this monograph, Warming investigates the structural and developmental principles underlying the branching patterns of phanerogams - seed-bearing plants that include both gymnosperms and angiosperms. Johannes Eugenius Warming (1841–1924), commonly known as Eugen Warming, was a pioneering Danish botanist widely recognized as one of the founding figures of modern ecology. He authored the first textbook on plant ecology in 1895, introduced the first university course in the subject, and helped define the scope and content of ecological science. In 1975, ecologist R. J. Goodland asserted: “If one individual can be singled out to be honoured as the founder of ecology, Warming should gain precedence” ("The Tropical Origin of Ecology: Eugen Warming's Jubilee"). Warming wrote a number of textbooks on botany, plant geography and ecology, which were translated to several languages and were immensely influential at their time and later. Most important were “Plantesamfund and Haandbog i den systematiske Botanik”.

First apperance of the paper relating Marignac's discovery of the rare earth Ytterbium (Ytterbia)."He began his study of the rare earths in 1840, when he was barely twenty-three years old. According to P.T. Cleve, "Marignac's work on the rare earths is undoubtedly the most importent in this particular department of chemistry". In 1878 marignac heated some erbium nitrate obtained from gadolinite until it decomposed. When he extracted the resulting mass with water, he obtained two oxides: a red one, for which he retained the name Erbia, and a colorless one, which he named Ytterbia." RENAN, ERNEST.
Herman H. J. Lynge & Søn A/S
lyn44909
Paris, Durand, 1852. 8vo. Contemporary half calf with of wear. Spine worn, lacking parts of capitals, and back hinge very weak. Usual brownspotting due to the paper quality. (4), XII, 367 pp. First edition of Renan's first book, -the seminal work that placed the study of Renaissance philosophy on the philosophical map and earned Renan a doctorate of letters. This work constitutes the first proper monograph on the great Islamic philosopher, Ibn Rush, also called Averroes, who is considered the greatest commentator on the works of Aristotle, and it is principally because of this work that the great philosopher and scientist is seriously appreciated in Europe today. Besides dealing with Averroes himself, Renan studies the development and different branches of Averroism, focusing on the Jewish, Scholastic and Paduan ones. His focus on the Paduan Averroism (16th century) in this work has meant that Renaissance philosophy was finally given a role of its own in the history of philosophy, -it is with this work that the philosophy of the Renaissance is taken seriously in the study of philosophy."Memoirs on semitic languages and on the study of Greek in the Middle Ages were crowned by the Académie in 1848 and 1849 but do not seem to have been published. Renan's first book, published in 1852, was, in fact, "Averroes et l'Averroïsme" which earned him a doctorate of letters." (PMM 352). Renan has always been admired for his sharp mind, his great abilities and courage, but for the same reasons he was feared by many. "Dés 1852 il signalait dans la préface de son Averroës comme le trait caractéristique du dix-neuvième siècle la substitution de la méthode historique dans toutes les études relatives à l'esprit humain. Cette substitution est légitime; mais elle serait dangereuse si elle allait jusqu'à proscrire la théologie et la métaphysique... " (N.B.G. (1862) 51:984). Ernest Renan (1823-1892) was a French philologist, philosopher and historian. His father died when he was aged five, and his mother wanted him to become a priest. Until he was about 16 years old, he was trained by the Church, but due to his investigative and truth-seeking nature as well as his studies (e.g. Hebrew), he was in doubt as to the historical truth of the Scriptures, and with the help of his sister he chose his own path in life. "He studied intensively the languages of the Bible and filled a number of minor academic positions, frequently encountering difficulties because of the heterodoxy and outspokenness of his religious opinions." (Printing and the Mind of Man 352). In 1840 he began studying philosophy and later philology, in 1847 he took his degree as Agrégé de Philosophie and became master at the Lycée of Vendome. After having returned from a mission to Italy in the year 1850 where he gathered material for his historical-philosophical masterpiece, "Averroës et l'Averroisme", he was offered employment at the "Bibliothèque Nationale" (at the manuscript department). In 1861 he was chosen to become professor of Hebrew at the Collège de France, but because the emperor refused to ratify the appointment (inspired by the Clerical party), he was not established in the chair untill 1870. In 1878 he was elected for the Academy. Renan is considered a scolar of the greatest excellence and an impressive writer.
