HERSCHEL, J.F.W. (JOHN FREDERICK WILLIAM). - THE "HERSCHEL CONDITION" INTRODUCED.
Herman H. J. Lynge & Søn A/S
lyn46100
London, W. Bulmer and W. Nicol, 1821. 4to. No wrappers as extracted from "Philosophical Transactions" 1821 - Part I. With titlepage to Part I. Pp. 222-267 a. 1 engraved plate. Verso of titlepage with 2 stamps. First appearance of this importent paper in optical theory in which Herschel described how to free lenses from the aberration for two axis points, one of which is infinitely distant. It is known as Herschel's condition. "Sir John Herschel gave the condition which must be satisfied in order that a symmetrical optical system, free from spherical aberration for two conjugate axial points, may also be free from spherical aberration for two neighbouring and conjugate points upon the axis of the system; but Herschel's condition applies only to first order aberration, i.e. to aberration depending upon the cube of the inclination of the ray to the axis. Abbe shewed, later, that this condition could be included in a wider result, viz. that the spherical aberration, supposed zero, is stationary for axial variations provided that the incident and emergent rays for two conjugate axial points, associated with modified magnification m, satisfy the relation. EULER, LEONHARD. - ON THE PRINCIPLE OF LEAST ACTION.
Herman H. J. Lynge & Søn A/S
lyn45871
(Berlin, Haude et Spener, 1750). 4to. No wrappers as issued in "Mémoires de l'Academie Royale des Sciences et Belles-Lettres" Tome IV, Année 1748. Pp. (189-) 218 and 1 engraved plate. First appearance of this paper, in which Euler proves that given the static principle, he can derive the equilibrium conditions for a fluid, and from these, he obtains the integrability conditions for a "Pfaffian" form in three variables. He also looks at the equilibrium of a weight suspended from three elastic cords by looking, via analogy, to a special case of the problem for fluids."In his 1748 paper, Euler in "Reflexions sur quelques loix generales de la nature.." starts by declaring his commitment to the least-action principle. His expression corresponds to what we would now call potential energy, so that his statement of least action (formulated by Maupertuis in 1746) in statics is equivalent to the principle that a system of bodies at rest will adopt a configuration that minimizes total potential energy. Euler called this quantity "effort"."Enestrom: E 146.

lyn43029
New York, American Telephone and Telegraph Company, 1975. 8vo. Original full green cloth, bound with the original blue wrappers. Volume 54, 1975 of "The Bell System Technical Journal". Library stamp to pasted down front free end-paper. Minor bumping to extremities. Beside a very few pencil marks a nice and clean copy. Pp. 1355-1387. [Entire issue: Pp. 1179-1796 + 4 wrappers]. First edition of Wyner's highly influential paper on the wire-tap channel. In the paper, Wyner shows how one could obtain "perfect secrecy" when a receiver enjoys a better channel than does the wire-tapping opponent."Aaron's interest in cryptography led him to invent the ``wire-tap channel.'' In his 1975 BSTJ paper introducing this channel, he worked out virtually its complete theory, showing the then-surprising fact that one could obtain perfect secrecy without the advance exchange of secret keys provided that the legitimate receiver enjoys a better channel from the sender than does the wire-tapping opponent. This work, which preceded the introduction of public-key cryptography, has had a steadily increasing influence on developments in this field. Recent results by Maurer and by Csiszar and Korner showing the remarkable usefulness of ``common randomness'' in cryptography are direct consequences of Wyner's work." (From the ITSOC obituary).Aaron D. Wyner is also known for his contributions in coding theory, particularly the Gaussian channel and cryptography.

8vo. In contemporary black half cloth with gilt lettering to spine. in "Popular Science monthly", no 8. Extremities with light wear, otherwise fine. [Entire volume: Pp. 641-778, 128, 641-777, 386-648]. First printing of Tyndall's famous two-paper series on Spontaneous Generation. The idea was that certain forms such as fleas could arise from inanimate matter such as dust, or that maggots could arise from dead flesh. This idea had been the dominating though for two millenniums until Pasteur in 1859 and Tyndall with the present publication finally laid this theory to rest. "One might think, then, that the question of spontaneous generation had to be resolved before germ theory could triumphed. It comes as a surprise to discover that germ theory triumphed while the issue of spontaneous generation was still subject to a lively debate. The whole question was only finally solved resolved in 1877, when John Tyndall showed that the outcome of experiments on sealed and heated environments, or on heated environments containing only heated air, depended not on the honesty and good faith, or technical competence and skill, of the experimenter, but on where he happened to conduct the experiment.Since Tyndall, and only since Tyndall, spontaneous generation experiments can be made to work reliably - but Pasteur and Lister had already brought about a revolution in medicine by claiming (mistakenly as it happens) that spontaneous generation had already been disproved." (Wootton, Bad Medicine).
