Leipzig, Ambrosius Barth, 1922. 8vo. In contemporary half cloth with gilt lettering to spine. In "Annalen der Physik", Vierte Folge, band 68. Entire volume offered. Stamp to verso of title-page and a few light occassional brown spots Lower corner of back board torn off, otherwise fine and clean. Pp. 177-240. [Entire volume: VII, (1), 632 pp. + 1 plate.) First appearance of Pauli's extended doctoral thesis in which he presents what was later named the Pauli-Niessen Model. Their works helped to show the inadequacy of the old quantum mechanics, which gave physicists the impetus to explore new paths which led to the matrix mechanics formulation of quantum mechanics by Werner Heisenberg and Max Born in 1925 and the wave mechanics formulation by Erwin Schrödinger in 1926, which were shown to be equivalent.Karel Niessen, Dutch theoretical physicist, published his doctoral thesis the year after Pauli.

First appearance of a famous paper in which Hermite introduced "Hermite-functions", solving differential equations over infinite intervals."The Hermite polynomials are a classical orthogonal polynomial sequence that arise in probability, such as the Edgeworth series; in combinatorics, as an example of an Appell sequence, obeying the umbral calculus; in numerical analysis as Gaussian quadrature; in finite element methods as Shape Functions for beams; and in physics, where they give rise to the eigenstates of the quantum harmonic oscillator. They are also used in systems theory in connection with nonlinear operations on Gaussian noise. They are named after Charles Hermite (1864) (the paper offered) although they were studied earlier by Laplace (1810) and Chebyshev (1859)."(Wikipedia).

Tübingen, Max Niemeyer, 1954. 8vo. Orig. self-wrappers w. a bit of soiling and a few small tears to top. Old owner's name on verso of title-page (Gustav Sprandel/ 1956). Some marginal markings and notes, mostly in pencil, otherwise a fine copy. (8), 174, (1) pp. First edition of one of the most important and influential works of the later Heidegger, which presents us with his unravelling of science, technology, Metaphysics and thinking (Denken), "What is Called Thinking?"The work contains the lectures given on this subject in the Winter of 1951-52 and the Summer of 1952.Heidegger here poses the question of what it is, that which is called thinking. A further question asked is, weather there is a "thinking", which has its purpose in itself and an aim that is not without itself, i.e. a thinking, which is self-sufficient and fulfilled through itself. We are thus confronted with two ways of thinking; one, which allows us to see the thing or nature in itself; the other, which challenges nature and thereby makes it appear to us in a certain way, which we can deduct and calculate our way to, -in this way nature remains a system of information, within which we will never experience what it might really be.

(New York), American physical Society, 1962. Lex8vo. Volume 9, No. 11, December 1, 1962 of "Physical Review Letters", In the original printed blue wrappers. A very nice and clean copy externally as well as internally, near mint. Pp. 439-443. [Entire issue: 439-477]. First printing of Giocconi's seminal paper in which the discovery of cosmic x-ray sources is presented for the first time, thereby documenting the first observation of an x-ray source outside the Solar System. The x-ray detector was launched on a rocket to look for x-ray emissions from the Moon; instead they found a bright source of soft x-rays in the constellation Scorpius. This source, now known as Scorpius X-1, is the brightest x-ray source in the sky after the Sun. It has since been identified as a neutron star in a binary-star system some 9,000 light years away. The discovery had immense consequences for cosmology, since Hoyle's Hot Universe continuous creation theory could not account for this emission. Riccardo Giacconi received the Nobel Prize in Physics in 2002 for his discovery.

Hilbert's paper: pp. 151-165. Internally clean and fine. First edition as a continuation of his paper from 1922 "Neubegründung der Mathematik. Erste Mitteilung"."This articlee, delivered as a lecture to the deutsche Naturforscher Gesellschaft in Leipzig, September 1922, is a sequel to (neubegründung...), and brings Hilbert's proof theory to maturity. Hilbert here introduces several technical refinements and clarification to his theory. Specifically: (i) he improves the formal system by adding a special sign for formal negation...(ii) he refines his account of the distinction between formal language and the metalanguage....(iii) he outlines a consistency proof for an elementary, quantifier-free formal system of number-theory. (iv) he begins to extend his proof theory to analysis and set theory....sketches a strategy for proving the consistency of a version of Zermel's axiom of choice for real numbers...(etc. etc).
