(London, Richard and John E. Taylor, 1847). 4to. No wrappers as extracted from "Philosophical Transactions" 1847 - Part I. Pp. 59-68 a. pp. 69-77, 5 lithographed plates (one folding), depicting the photographic magnetometer. Clean and fine. First printing of an importent paper in the history of meteorology, describing the invention of the Brooke-magnetometer. This new photographic drum method ensured continuous recording of geomagnetic elements, and rapidly gained use all over the world. The instrumental developments by Ronalds and Brooke establishedthe standard technique employed for magnetic observatory recording for more than a century. In 1845 Charles Brooke devised a self-recording photographic magnetometer with a light-source, a mirror for amplifying the magnet’s movement, and a drum of photographic paper. This system gradually replaced the older manual method of taking eye-observations through vertical microscope which scanned the ends of a magnetic needle; the magnetic needle itself was suspended by a bunch of silk fibersWheeler Gift No 2858..

(Nature), 1974. Royal8vo. The entire volume 249 and 250, 1974 of Nature bound in one nice full light green cloth. Pasted library stamp to pasted down free front end-paper and free front end-paper. Binding tight, clean and fresh externally as well as internally. Pp. [Vol. 250:] 26-31. [Entire volume: 870, [2), 804 pp.]. First edition of Grime's seminal paper in which the CSR Triangle theory is presented. The theory is widely regarded as being one of the most influential theories in explaining ecological growth- and survival strategies. The CRS theory is built upon the three pillars: Competitor, Stress tolerator and Ruderal, and each of them present a strategy for plants to survive and grow. "It is suggested that there are three major determinants of vegetation - competition, stress and disturbance - and that each has invoked a distinct strategy on the part of the flowering plant. A method is described whereby is it possible to distinguish types of herbaceous vegetation by reference to the relative importance of the three strategies in the genotypes of the component species", from the introduction to the present article. The theory was presented in the context of plants but has been widely accepted in animal ecology as well. In 1979 Grimes expanded and elaborated his theory in the book "Plant Strategies and Vegetation Processes".

(London, Richard Taylor and William Francis, 1852). 4to. No wrappers as extracted from "Philosophical Transactions" 1852 - Part I. Pp. 137-159, textillustr. Clean and fine. First appearance of this paper dealing with establishing his concept of "lines of force" in connection with the experimentally obtained results for the magnetic force of the earth. The paper also discusses ways of determining and measure magnetic and electrical forces. From 1831 to 1852 Michael Faraday published his "Experimental Researches in Electricity" in The Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society. These papers contain not only an impressive series of experimental discoveries, but also a collection of heterodox theoretical concepts on the nature of these phenomena expressed in terms of lines of forces and fields. He published 30 papers in all under this general title. They represents Faraday's most importent work, are classics in both chemistry and physics and are the experimental foundations for Maxwell's electro-magnetic theory of light, using Faraday's concepts of lines of force or tubes of magnetic and electrical forces. His many experiments on the effects of electricity and magnetism presented in these papers lead to the fundamental discoveries of 'induced electricity' (the Farday current), the electronic state of matter, the identity of electricity from different sources, equivalents in electro-chemical decomposition, electrostatic induction, hydro-electricity, diamagnetism, relation of gravity to electricity, atmospheric magnetism and many other."Among experimental philosophers Faraday holds by universal consent the foremost place. The memoirs in which his discoveries are enshrined will never ceaseto be read with admiration and delight; and future generations will preserve with an affection not less enduring the personal records and familiar letters, which recall the memory of his humble and unselfish spirit."(Edmund Whittaker in A History of the Theories of Aether and Electricity).

(London, Harrison and Sons, 1880). 4to. No wrappers as extracted from "Philosophical Transactions", 1879, Vol. 170 - Part II. Pp. 447-538 and. 1 plate. Clean and fine. First appearance of an importent paper, announcing Darwin's so-called "Resonance Theory" of the origin of the moon, according to which the moon might have originated from the fission of a parent earth as the result of an instability produced by resonant solar tides."Darwin's most significant contribution to the history of science lies in his pioneering work in the application of detailled dynamical analysis to cosmological and geological problems. That many of his conclusions are now out of date should in no way diminish the historical interest in his experiments, nor the importent service thet he rendered cosmogony by the example he gave of putting various hypotheses to the test of actual calculations. Darwin's method remains a milestone in the development of cosmogony, and subsequent investigators have favored it over the merely qualitative arguments prevalent until that time."(DSB).

"As soon as he came into contact with the work of Riemann and Weierstrass on Abelian Functions and algebraic geometry, Poincaré was very much attracted by those fields. His papers on these subjects occupy in his complete works as much space as those on automorphic functions, their dates ranging from 1881 to 1911. One of his main ideas in these papers is that of "reduction" of Abelian functions. Generalizing particular cases studied b Jacobi, Weierstrass, and Picard, Poincaré proved the general "complete reducibility" theorem..."(DSB).

Kjøbenhavn, Thiele, 1860. Small 8vo. Contemporary wrappers with black cloth back-strip. Orig. title-page pasted on to front wrapper. Presentation-inscription (fra Forfatteren) shaved. Ex-library copy with two stamps to title page. A nice and clean copy. (2), 22 pp. Rare first edition, presentation-copy "fra Forfatter" [i.e. from the author] on front wrapper, of Colding's observations concerning dampness in Copenhagen and surroundings. The present work is based on Colding's experiences and observations during his years as state-engineer. The water supply in Copenhagen was largely built upon the accumulation on the thaw drain in spring, hence his studies on evaporation in lake Peblinge and lake Damhus in Copenhagen. During the 1850' ies Colding initiated drillings in the catchment area of lake Damhus. These drillings created the foundations for The Copenhagen Waterworks. Ludvig August Colding (1815 - 1888) was a famous Danish engineer and physicist. He was originally educated as a carpenter but graduated as mechanical engineer in 1841. In 1845 he became water-inspector in Copenhagen and in 1847 he was also given the responsibility of the gas- and waterworks. Together with the famous chemist Julius Thomsen, he proved that the cholera spread throughout Copenhagen through the drinking water (1853) - a most significant discovery. After this he was responsible replacing much of the sewer-system of Copenhagen. In 1857 he became state engineer. During this period he overhauled the desperately inadequate water and sanitation system.
