First appearance of this paper in which Plücker reconstructed analytical geometry by the application of a wealth of new ideas.He introduces the fundamental principle "the geometry needs not solely be based on points as basic elements. Lines, planes, circles, spheres can all be used as the elements ("Raum-Elemente") on which a geometry can be based. This fertile conception threw new light on both synthetic and algebraic geometry, and created new forms of duality."(Dirk J. Struik).This paper, together with other papers expanded , in 1868-69, into his famous book, bearing the same title as the paper offered.

Hjalmar Jensen / with kind regards / and thanks / from the author"). Damp stain to upper margin of first and last leaves, otherwise a nice and clean copy. VIII, 988, 64 pp. Third German edition, presentation copy, of the founding work on Plant ecology and Plant communities. The present copy was given by Warming to Hjalmar Jensen (1865–1948) a Danish botanist. He studied natural history and geography, worked at the University of Copenhagen and an agricultural station in Karlsruhe and spent several years on tobacco plantations in Java. In 1922 he became a lecturer in microbiology at the Royal Veterinary and Agricultural University in Copenhagen, where he was made professor in 1933. "Warming was the founder of plant ecology. The term "ecology", first used by Haeckel in 1866, was introduced into botany by H. reiter in 1885M but is was Warming who made ecology a preferred field of activity for many botanists. In "Plantesamfund" (1895) - (the work offered) - he formulated the program of his research: "To answer the question: Why each species has its own habit and habitat, why the species congregate to form definitive communities, and why these have a characteristic physiognomy.". The book created an enormous senstaion as a new attempt at grouping and characterizing the plant communities - a new phytogeographical term by which Warming meant a group of species forming a physiognomically well-defined unity, such as a meadow. In all essentials the species of a community are subject to the same external conditions arising from the ecological factors. These factors are of a fundamental importence to the ecology ofthe individual plant and the plant community. Considering water to be the most importent factor, Warming divided plant communities into four types: hydrophytic, xerophytic, halophytic, and mesophytic."(DSB XIV, p. 181). “It was Warming, in an 1895 Danish botanical textbook called Plantesamfund (Plant Communities), who defined the nature of the discipline. He pointed out that organisms, plant and animal, live in highly developed communities, the tenure of which depends on such things as temperature, rainfall, soil constitution, elevation, and countless other factors. He noted that communities change over time, moving toward what he called "climax" communities, which will remain dominant until conditions change. But he also advised that conditions will change, through wildfire, or floods, or man-made alterations, and that such changes are often irreversible, so that a forest turned into grassland will seldom revert to a forest community again.” (Linda Hall)

Internally fine and clean. 46, (2) pp. First printing of Carnap's publication in which asserted that many philosophical questions were meaningless, the way they were posed amounted to abuse of language. An operational implication of this opinion was taken to be the elimination of metaphysics from responsible human discourse. This is the statement for which Carnap was best known for many years.The publication also introduces for the first time his universal "meaning criterium". He indicates that the elimination of metaphysics serves philosophy, not science. All in the Vienna Circle followed Carnap's judgement in Pseudoproblems of Philosophy and Schlick's contention in his response to Planck's renewal of anti-Machian polemics that questions like that of the reality of the external world were not well-formed ones but only constituted pseudo-questions. Carnap himself said about the publication: "The pamphlet Scheinprobleme in der Philosophie… was first written in the Spring of 1927, at the end of my first year in Vienna. It shows, therefore, a stronger influence of the Vienna discussions and Wittgenstein's book [Tractatus]. [the] condemnation [in Scheinprobleme] of all theses about metaphysical reality, which I sharply distinguish from empirical reality, is more radical than that in Aufbau, where such theses are only excluded from the domain of science. My more radical outlook was influenced by Wittgenstein's view that metaphysical statements, while in principle unverifiable, are therefore senseless. In this paper Poincaré arrives at a new theorem about canonical transformation, and in his later "Methodes Nouvelles", he proved this theorem using a variiational principle of mechanics, known today as the Hamilton principle.

Clebsch and Riemann tried to solve the problem of the uniformization for curves. "In 1882 Klein gave a general uniformization theorem, but the proof was not complete. In 1883 Poincaré announced his general uniformization theorem but he too had no complete proof. Both Klein and Poincaré continued to work hard to prove this theorem but no decisive result was obtained for twent-five years. In 1907 Poincare (in the offered paper) and Paul Koebe independently gave a proof of this uniformization theorem...With the theorem on uniformization now rigorously established an improved treatment of algebraic functions and their integrals has become possible." Boisbaudran's paper: pp. 322-324. First apperance of the paper in which Boisbaudran revealed his discovery of a new earth that precipitated had a unique spectrum. De Boisbaudran named it samaria, after the mineral from which it was derived. The mineral samarskite is named for a Russian mining engineer and Chief of Staff - Corps of Mining Engineers, Colonel Vasili Evgrafovich Samarsky-Bykhovets."Samarium was discovered by French chemist Paul Émile Lecoq de Boisbaudran in 1879. He noticed in his research that impure didymium (praseodymium and neodymium with other impurities), seemed to contain more than just didymium based on spectroscopic work on various rare-earth minerals. When Lecoq de Boisbaudran added ammonium hydroxide to a concentrate prepared from the mineral samarskite he observed a precipitate that formed before the didymium (Weeks and Leicester, 1968, p. 685).
