Livorno, Glauco Masi, 1822. 8vo. Bound in a splendid full call binding with gilt title-label, richly gilt spine and elaborately gild boards with broad gilt floral borders and gilt, crowned initials to centre ("J. P."). Edges of boards and all edges gilt. Small damp stain to the lower blank margin and to the top of the first 10 leaves, otherwise internally very nice and clean. With gift-inscription for James Pennethorne from D. Gregory (presumably hos uncle). With lithographed frontispiece portrait of the author. X, 264; 259 pp. A magnificent copy, which has belonged to the famous English architect and planner James Pennethorne, famous for his parks and buildings in central London."For a period of thirty years in the mid-nineteenth century James Pennethorne was more intimately involved with the planning and building of London than any other major architect. A pupil of John Nash, he took over his teacher's practice and became government architect for the first half of Victoria's reign. He was responsible for the planning of new streets, the laying out of parks, and the design of important public buildings such as the Public Record Office, the west wing of Somerset House, and the Duchy of Cornwall office. It is therefore almost impossible for Londoners to avoid coming into contact with some aspect of his work." (Cambridge Studies in the History of Architecture).

STIBOLT, ERNST WILHELM.

lyn60504
Kiøbenhavn (Copenhagen), August Friderich Stein, 1784. 4to. Uncut unopened in recent plain wrappers. A very fine and clean copy printed on good paper. 50 pp. + folded plates. First appearance of Stibolt’s important dissertation on the fragility of ships. In 1780 Stibolt assumed the role of General Adjutant to the King, and he compiled several reports regarding the defensive structures on Christiansø. He also played a role in ship construction endeavors, notably contributing to the creation of the "unsinkable" defense frigate known as Hjælperen. This frigate was intended to participate in the Battle of Copenhagen in 1801. However, Stibolt's professional journey was marred by conflicts with Henrik Gerner, a renowned master shipbuilder who was regarded as a superior designer. Subsequently, disagreements emerged with Hohlenberg, a student of Gerner who later became a master shipbuilder. These conflicts took a toll on Stibolt's well-being. Following Henrik Gerner's passing in 1787, Stibolt was appointed as the interim master shipbuilder for the Danish navy in 1788. This temporary position was later confirmed as a permanent role in 1790. Stibolt's impressive portfolio encompassed the design and construction of approximately 39 vessels of diverse types, in addition to 37 smaller boats. This collection included four ships-of-the-line, five frigates, and numerous smaller ships. Notably, Stibolt's ship designs continued to be utilized, even beyond his lifetime, with additional ships, particularly brigs, being built based on his designs.

Two small stamps to title-page and free front end-paper. Library label to pasted down front free end-paper. Occassional brownspots throughout. (4), 552, (28) pp + 5 plates. First edition of Acta Eruditorum 1729 containing many reviews by influential contemporary mathematicians, philosophers and historians amonst others a review of Danish astronomer Horrebow's Copernicus Triumphans (1727): "Peder Horrebow, a fellow Dane and student of Rømer who ended up a professor in Copenhagen, concluded in 1727 that finally, at long last, he had proved the parallax, presenting his findings in a book with the revealing title Copernicus triumphans. The book caused quite a sensation among Europe's astronomical community - and as it soon turned out, Horrebow's claim was actually based more on sensation than on reality. Copernicus triumphans is, nevertheless, an important work in the Danish history of science, simply because it marks the ultimate victory for Copernicanism". (Kragh, Science in Denmark, P. 93)

lyn53367
Leipzig, Johann Ambrosius Barth, 1911. Later full cloth. Stamps on title-page. In "Annalen der Physik", Vierte Folge, Band 36. - VIII,1088 pp. and 4 plates. (Entire volume offered). Ehrenfest's paper: pp. 91-118. First edition of the paper in which the term "Ultraviolet Catastrophe" appeared for the first time. "Ehrenfest was one of the first to try to understand the significance of the strange new concept of energy quanta that Max Planck had introduced into physics in 1900 in his theory of blackbody radiation. In a series of papers culminating in his major study of 1911 (the paper offered), "Which Features of the Quantum Hypothesis Play an Essential Role in the Theory of Heat Radiation?," Ehrenfest picked out the essentials of the early quantum theory and showed how they fit together. He proved rigorously that the energy of electromagnetic vibrations cannot take on all values - cannot vary continuously - if the total energy of the blackbody radiation in an enclosure is to be finite: Planck’s assumption that energy is a discrete variable was, therefore, logically necessary and not just sufficient. Ehrenfest also showed, by an analysis of Wien’s displacement law, that the ratio of energy to frequency was the only variable that could be quantized for a harmonic oscillator, if one wanted to maintain the statistical interpretation of entropy."(DSB).

(Berlin, Haude et Spener, 1753-54). 4to. Unbound, but stitched. In: "Memoires de l'Academie Royale des Sciences et Belles-Lettres" Tome VII pp. (57-)100 and Tome VIII pp. 350-390. First editions and the first reports of the electrophysiological effects of electricity, the so-called electric taste produced by passing a small electric current through the tongue. The effect was described here nearly 50 years before Galvani and Volta investigated the phenomena (Galvani 1791, Volta 1792)."In a work entitled "Recherches sur l'origine des sentiments agréables et désagreables", which was published in 1752 (correctly published in 1753, the item offered), Johann Georg Sulzer (1720-79) had mentioned that two pieces of metal, the one of lead and the other of silver, be joined together in such a manner that their edges touch, and if they be placed on the tongue, a taste is perceived 'similar to that of vitriol of iron', although neither of these metals applied separately gives any trace of such taste. 'It is not probable', he says, 'that this contact of the two metals causes a solution of either of them, liberating particles which might affect the tongue; and we must therefore conclude that the contact sets up a vibration in their particles, which, by affecting the nerves of the tongue, produces the taste in question.'. This observation was not suspected to have any connection with electrical phenomena, and it played no part in the inception of the next discovery, which indeed was suggested by a mere accident."(Whittaker. A History of the Theories of Aether and Electricity. I:p. 67).

lyn47073
Lancaster, American Physical Society, 1936. 4to. In: "The Physical Review", Vol. 49, Second Series. X,971 pp. (Entire volume offered). Einstein & Rosen's paper: pp. 404-405. First printing of Einstein and Rosen's answer to Silberstein's critique of Einstein's Theory of Relativity .."Ludwik Silberstein, who initially was a supporter of the special theory, objected at different occasions against general relativity. In 1920 he argued that the deflection of light by the sun, as observed by Arthur Eddington et al. (1919), is not necessarily a confirmation of general relativity, but may also be explained by the Stokes-Planck theory of complete aether drag. However, such models are in contradiction with the aberration of light and other experiments (see "Alternative theories"). And in 1935, Silberstein claimed to have found a contradiction in the Two-body problem in general relativity. However, also this claim was refuted by Einstein and Rosen (1935) (in the paper offered)."(Wikipedia).
