Most were urinary calculi which, independently of Wollaston, they classified according to chemical composition from 1798 onwards. They confirmed the frequent presence of uric acid and phiosphate of lime (discovered in calculi by Scheele and Georg Pearson respectively) and also found urate of ammonia, the double phosphate of magnesia and ammonia, and occasionally other compounds....In an attempt to find why urinary calculi were formed, Fourcroy and Vauquelin investigated urine, and in 1799 they gave (in the paper offered) the first satisfactory account of ures, which hey named....(they) isolated it by recrystallization from alcohol, and in 1808, achieved a purer state by adding alkali to the crystalline nitrate that they had discovered."(DSB V, p. 92-93).

First printing of this fundamental paper in vulcanology, explaining the occurrences of basalts. This French version published at the same time as the English from Nicholson's Journal, vol. 2, pp. 285-88 (the English version being only an abstract of a paper wich was published in full in1805)."James Hall demonstrates experimentally that lavas when cooled quickly can be fused into glass, which then, if remelted and cooled slowly, can transform back into a more stony substance. He thereby offers an explanation for the occurrence in some dykes of a vitreous outer portion in contact with the surrounding rock (the rock having been relatively cold as the original lava rose into it, hence causing rapid cooling) and a more crystalline structure in the central portions." REYNOLDS, OSBORNE - THERMAL OSMOSIS & THERMAL TRANSPIRATION.
Herman H. J. Lynge & Søn A/S
lyn42660
(London, Harrison and Sons, 1879). 4to. No wrappers as extracted from "Philosophical Transactions" 1879 - Vol. 170 - Part II. Pp. 727-845 and 3 plates. The plates slightly brownspotted, otehrwise fine and clean. First printing of this classic paper on "thermal respiration" in which Reynolds explains how some of the movements of the vanes in Crookes' Radiometer can be accounted for. "The correct solution to the problem (the problem of finding the cause of the movement of the vanes in Crooke's radiometer) was provided qualitatively by Osborne Reynolds, better remembered for the "Reynolds number". Early in 1879 Reynolds submitted a paper to the Royal Society in which he considered what he called "thermal transpiration", and also discussed the theory of the radiometer. By "thermal transpiration", Reynolds meant the flow of gas through porous plates caused by a temperature difference on the two sides of the plates. If the gas is initially at the same pressure on the two sides, it flows from the colder to the hotter side, resulting in a higher pressure on the hotter side if the plates cannot move. Equilibrium is reached when the ratio of pressures on either side is the square root of the ratio of absolute temperatures. This counterintuitive result is due to tangential forces between the gas molecules and the sides of the narrow pores in the plates. The effect of these thermomolecular forces is very similar to the thermomechanical effects of superfluid liquid helium. This liquid, which lacks all viscosity, will climb the sides of its container towards a warmer region. In fact, this form of liquid helium climbs so quickly up the sides of a thin capillary tube dipped into it, that a fountain is produced at the tube's other end."(Philip Gibbs).

NILSON, L.- F. (LARS FREDRIK). - THE DISCOVERY OF A NEW ELEMENT SCANDIUM.

Nilson's papers: pp. 642-645 a. 645-648. First leaf with a tear to right margin, no loss of paper. First apperance of the papers in which Nilson describes his discovery of a new element and its properties, and naming it Scandium. It was the second new element found after Mendeleev's prediction of its existence as "Eka-Boron"."Mendeléeff had predicted that another element, which he called eka-boron and which he said would have an atomic weight between 40 (calcium) and 48 (titanium), would some day be revealed. It was discovered in 1879 by Lars Fredrik Nilson.... Nilson extracted 63 grams of the rare earth erbia from gadolinite and euxenite, and converted it into the nitrate. Upon decomposing this salt by heat, as Marignac had done, he obtained some very pure ytterbia and, to his great surprise, an earth that was unknown to him.Upon thoroughly investigating this new earth, he found that it contained an element whose properties concided almost exactly with those Mendeléef had predicted for ekaboron. Nilson called it scandium in honour of his fatherland."(Weeks "Discovery of the Elements" pp. 219-20).Parkinson "Breakthroughs" 1879 C.

HERSCHEL, JOHN W.F. - FLOURESCENCE DISCOVERED IN QUININE SOLUTION
Herman H. J. Lynge & Søn A/S
lyn42918
(London, Richard and John E. Taylor, 1845). 4to. No wrappers as extracted from "Philosophical Transactions" 1845 - Part I. Pp 143-145 . pp. 147-153. Clean and fine. First appearance of these highly influential papers as Herschel here reported the first observation of the fluorescence of a quinine solution in sunlight. - In a footnote to the report Herschel points out that he was writing from memory, having carried out the experiment more than twenty years before. Nevertheless, his reminiscence was enough to spark further exploration, eventually resulting in the modern understanding of fluorescence. In fact, even today, quinine is one of the most commonly utilized fluorophores for spectroscopy, enjoyed by many for the strange, but beautiful fluorescence that was first observed, but unable to be unexplained, by Herschel.
