CEZANNE, Paul. - Lloyd, Christopher:
Kirkegaards Antikvariat
kir57824
Los Angeles: J. Paul Getty Museum, 2015. 8vo. Publishers hardcover, with protected dustjacket. 320 pages, with 198 color and 28 b/w illustrations. Fine clean attractive copy. 1st edition. "Paul Cézanne (1839–1906) was one of the most influential artists of his day, producing work derived from “the most acute sensibility at grips with the most searching rationality” according to his friend, the writer Joachim Gasquet. Honoring tradition while also challenging it, his example made possible the advances of numerous younger artists such as Henri Matisse, Pablo Picasso, and Georges Braque, thereby paving the way for the emergence of modern art. Cézanne’s novel approach was evident as much in his drawings and watercolors as in his oil paintings. While the hundreds of drawings that the artist left behind in his sketchbooks confirm the centrality of this medium to his artistic practice, his watercolors from the 1890s were undertaken as works of art in their own right. These latter efforts—most of them landscapes and still lifes executed in Provence in the South of France—rank among the finest achievements in this difficult medium from any period. This beautifully illustrated volume traces the development of Cézanne’s style through his works on paper. Diverse in subject matter and execution, his drawings and watercolors include copies of other masters’ works, studies of his immediate family and their domestic surroundings, and preliminary ideas for finished compositions. They reveal Cézanne as someone deeply committed to devising a process for comprehending and recording the world as he saw it. The result is some of the most absorbing art ever created.

Cologne: Studio DuMont Buchverlag, 1978. Large squarish 4to hardcover with dustjacket. Unpaginated with app. 80 photographs and an introductory text by Rudolf Knubel in German. Excellent fine attractive copy. First edition. Beautiful photobook in great graphic design by Tünn Konnerding. Ursula Schulz-Dornburg is exploring with camera and though her book publications the complex bonds between landscape and human civilization, exploring the construction of power though the built environment and its inevitable impermanence. By looking back at areas of past historical or political importance her images highlight how conflict, destruction, time and decay transforms the landscape. Many of Schulz-Dornburg’s projects derive from a relatively confined geographic location, encompassing ancient civilizations alongside areas of modern strategic importance. Historically referred to as both a gateway and a cross roads, or the ‘land in-between’, the area was often defined not by its content but by what lies on either side, between Europe and Asia, east and west, old and new. Over a thirty-year period, Schulz-Dornburg travelled to this region, visiting Armenia, Georgia, Iran, Iraq, Saudi Arabia and Yemen. Documenting ruins of the now abandoned Ottoman railway project in Saudi Arabia, decaying Soviet era bus stops in Armenia, and temporary marsh dwellings in Mesopotamia. Most recently, in 2010, she travelled to Syria to photograph the ancient city of Palmyra. Her images now form some of the last visual documentation of the area prior to its recent destruction. For this present book Ursula Schulz-Dornburg was visiting Pagan city in Burma 1976 - now Bagan, Myanmar - , where she was photographing the holy temples, both in their landscape form and inside. Bagan is an ancient city located in the Mandalay Region of Myanmar. From the 9th to 13th centuries, the city was the capital of the Pagan Kingdom, the first kingdom that unified the regions that would later constitute modern Myanmar. During the kingdom's height between the 11th and 13th centuries, over 10,000 Buddhist temples, pagodas and monasteries were constructed in the Bagan plains alone, of which the remains of over 2,200 temples and pagodas still survive to the present day. - A very tentative, beautiful book.

Palsson, Magnus:

Iceland: Mumbling Eye, 2021. Small 8vo hardcover. (40) pages. Text in P-language, Icelandic and English. New copy. First edition, one of only 200 numbered and signed copies. Magnús Pálsson is one of Iceland’s premier artists; a national treasure. In 1978 he was instrumental in founding The Living Art Museum (Nýló). Sculptor, sound poet, performer and inspirational teacher, Magnús comes from a strong Fluxus background, where he and his clan forged the beginnings of conceptualism and concrete poetry. As a sculptor, Magnús dealt with enigma and touch by making casts of negative spaces and trapping ephemeral moments in solidifying plaster. His signature piece from that time is a cast of the space between the three wheels of a Sikorsky helicopter and its landing field, seconds before it actually touches down. Made in 1976, this work was exhibited in Venice in 1980 when Magnús represented Iceland at the 37th Biennale. Gradually he moved away from solid material into the more fluid realm of sound and action where recently he has made works for choirs, JCB earth diggers, ghosts and children.

kir54761
MIT Press, 2010. 8vo thick hardcover, with jacket 500 pages with 62 b&w photos, 1 b&w illus, 15 halftones. Excellent clean copy. First edition, hardcover. How technologies, from the mechanical to the computational, have transformed artistic performance practices: " technology's influence on artistic performance practices in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. In Entangled, Chris Salter shows that technologies, from the mechanical to the computational—from a “ballet of objects and lights” staged by Diaghilev's Ballets Russes in 1917 to contemporary technologically-enabled “responsive environments”—have been entangled with performance across a wide range of disciplines. Salter examines the rich and extensive history of performance experimentation in theater, music, dance, the visual and media arts, architecture, and other fields; explores the political, social, and economic context for the adoption of technological practices in art; and shows that these practices have a set of common histories despite their disciplinary borders. Each chapter in Entangled focuses on a different form: theater scenography, architecture, video and image making, music and sound composition, body-based arts, mechanical and robotic art, and interactive environments constructed for research, festivals, and participatory urban spaces."

Essays Paul Roth and Frank Goodyear. Light shelfwear with only a hint of wear to corners, overall a fine clean copy. 1st edition. - Beautifully printed. Due to size and weight extra shipping will apply for this item - please inquire before ordering! "Richard Avedon, America's preeminent portraitist and fashion photographer, photographed the many faces of politics throughout his career. Portraits of Power brings together Avedon's political portraits for the first time. Juxtaposing images of elite government, media and labor officials with counter-cultural activists, writers and artists, as well as ordinary citizens caught up in national debates, it offers a five-decade taxonomy of politics and power by one of America's best-known artists. The book features several of Avedon's extended projects addressing these themes, including coverage of the civil rights debate in the early 1960s (published in 1964 in Nothing Personal); the American anti-war movement and the war in Vietnam from 1969-1971; portraits of the American power elite in 1976, produced for his groundbreaking Rolling Stone portfolio "The Family;" "Exiles: The Kennedy Court at the End of the American Century," a retrospective homage to the Camelot generation published in the New Yorker in 1993; and his final photo-essay, "Democracy," surveying the national mood during the politically fractious period prior to the 2004 presidential elections (published posthumously in the New Yorker in 2004). Richard Avedon (1923-2004) was the most successful fashion photographer and portraitist in America throughout a six-decade career. Serving in the Merchant Marines during World War II, Avedon was assigned to the photography unit and learned his trade making identification portraits. After the war, he found work as a photographer for Harper's Bazaar and Theater Arts and began a fruitful apprenticeship with legendary editor, designer and artist Alexey Brodovitch. Avedon invigorated the staid fashion photography of the time, staging fictional tableaux and developing an unprecedented theatrical style. Moving to Vogue in 1966 and the New Yorker in 1993, Avedon continued to innovate. Extraordinarily prolific throughout his career, he produced many books, among them Nothing Personal (1964), An Autobiography (1993) and The Sixties (1999)."

Licht, Alan with foreword by Jim O'Rourke:
Kirkegaards Antikvariat
kir50253
New York & London: Rizzoli, 2009. 8vo hardcover with jacket. 304 pages. Including cd. Fine clean copy. "Over the past century, an art form has emerged that draws from the worlds of visual art and music. Sound art’s roots can be found in the experimental work of Italian Futurism, Dada, and later the Fluxus group and the pioneering efforts of the American composer and artist John Cage. In the wake of this groundbreaking work, sound art began to mature into a movement, and artists explored the interactive possibilities of sound and in turn created entirely new modes of experiencing and engaging with art. In this volume, the complete story of sound art is told by one of the country’s leading critics and scholars. The author traces the history of this form of art–highlighting the convergence of the indie world bands such as Sonic Youth with the art world–looking at the critical cross-pollination that has led to some of the most important and challenging art being produced today, including work by Christian Marclay, LaMonte Young, Janet Cardiff, Rodney Graham, and Laurie Anderson, among many others. About the Author: Alan Licht is an American composer, guitarist, music writer, and a widely respected figure on the experimental music scene. He is not only responsible for important album reissues, but was a member of the cult classic NYC bands Love Child and Run On. He currently lives in New York City. Jim O’Rourke is an American musician and producer, and most widely known as a member of the rock band Sonic Youth. Considered an expert on experimental music, he has scored films for Werner Herzog and Olivier Assayas." - An essential guide to sound art with CD with pieces from Bill Fontana ('Harmonic Bridge'), Steve Roden ('Rust'), Jean Dubuffet ('Terre foisonnante'), Destroy All Monsters ('Jam Smear'), Anthony Burr et Charles Curtis ('Still and Moving Lines of Silence in Families of Hyperbolas' (1973-74) from Alvin Lucier) and Bernhard Gal ('57A').
