Kbh., (1837). Samt. hshirtbd. m. skindtitelfelt på ryg. Slidtage v. kapitæler og kanter. Brunplettet, lidt tæt beskåret. M. portr. af Chr. Winther. Aarestup, Hauch, Heiberg, Hertz, Holst, Ingemann, Ohlenschläger, Winther m.fl.

Herman H. J. Lynge & Søn A/S
lyn49695
(Berlin, Haude et Spener, 1753). 4to. No wrappers, as issued in "Mémoires de l'Academie Royale des Sciences et Belles-Lettres", tome VII, Année 1751. Pp. 221-245 and pp. 246-254 a. 1 engraved plate. First editions. The first paper concerns the Argument over the principle of least action, relating to the famous controversy - and one of the ugliest scientific controversies - between Koenig and Maupertuis. "In 1751 a sensational new argument began when S. König published some critical remarks on Maupertuis’s principle of least action (1744) and cited a letter of Leibniz in which the principle was, in König’s opinion, formulated more precisely. Submitting to Maupertuis, the Berlin Academy rose to defend him and demanded that the original of Leibniz’ letter (a copy had been sent to König from Switzerland) be presented. When it became clear that the original could not be found, Euler published, with the approval of the Academy, "Exposé concernant l’examen de la lettre de M. de Leibnitz" (1752), where, among other things, he declared the letter a fake. The conflict grew critical when later in the same year Voltaire published his Diatribe du docteur Akakia, médecin du pape, defending König and making laughingstocks of both Maupertuis and Euler."(DSB) - Enestrom No. 199.The second paper - Enestrom No. 200.

(Editors Foreword). - "New experiments and observations have been added, and a wider choice of the material offered by the more recent current literature has been made in the interest of a clear representation of the leading ideas..."(Author's Preface).

Berlin, Julius Springer, 1927. 8vo. Contemp. hcloth. Gilt lettering to spine. In: "Zeitschrift für Physik" Vol. 48. VIII,891 pp. (Entire volume offered). Neumann's paper: pp. 868-881. A stamp to titlepage. Clean. First printing of a famous paper in which Neumann extends the relativistic wave equation of the electron set forth by Dirac earlier the same year and Neumann here gives the five fundamental covariants of the Dirac theory."Von Neumann’s most famous work in theoretical physics is his axiomatization of quantum mechanics. When he began work in that field in 1927, the methods used by its founders were hard to formulate in precise mathematical terms; "operator" on "functions" were handled without much consideration of their domain or definition to their topological properties: and it was blithely assumed that such "operators," when self-adjoint, could always be "diagonalized" (as in th finite dimensional case), at the expense of introducing "Dirac functions" as "eigenvectors." Von Neumann showed that mathematical rigor could be restored by taking as basic axioms the assumptions that the states of a physical system were poinds of a Hilbert space and that the measurable quantities were Hermitian (generally unbounded) operators densely efined in that space."(DSB).

Lewis, first published in book form in his 'Survey of Symbolic Logic' of 1918. This theory is commonly called the logic of strict implication, because it was originally put forward in opposition to an account of implication which Lewis thought mistaken."(Kneale and Kneale "The Development of Logic" 1962, p. 548 ff.).
