(The entire issue offerd). Balard's paper: pp. 337-84. First printing of Balard's famous memoire in which he records his discovery of the new element Bromine (le brôme). While he was studying the flora of a salt marsh, he notized a deposit of sodium saulfate which had crystallized out in a pan containing mother liquer from common salts. "In an attempt to find a use for the waste liquers he performed a number of experiments, and notized that when certain reagents were added, the mother liquer bacame brown. His investigation of this phenomenon,...ked to the remarkable discovery....(Weeks p. 264)."The discovery of a new chemical element by a young and obscure provincial pharmacist caused a sensation in Paris. Balard's achievemnt was recognized by the Academie des Sciences and he was awarded a medal by the Royal Society of London."(DSB I, p. 416)."The discovery of bromine is a very importent acquisition to chemistry, and gives M. Balrad honorable rank inthe career of the sciences. We are of the opinion that this young chemist is every way worthy of the encouragement of the Academy, and we have the honour to propose that his memoir shall be printed in the "Recueil des Savants Étrangers" (The report from the French Academy, signed by Vaugelin, Thenard, and Gay-Lussac).

Dumas & Liebig's paper: pp. (567-) 572. First appearance of a historical paper in chemistry. stating a new way to organize organic chemistry. When Liebig visited Paris in 1837, he persuaded Dumas to accept the ethyl theory, and in a joint memoir (written by Liebig) presented on 23 October 1837 to the Paris Academy (the paper offered) they asserted that "in inorganic chemistry the radicals are simple; in organic chemistry they are compounds - that is the sole difference. The laws of combination, the laws of reaction, are the same in the two branches of chemistry" (Partington, vol. IV, p. 351)."In the paper "Note on the present state of organic chemistry" .... (Dumas and Liebig)) claim to have found the key to systematically organizing organic chemistry, basing research not on the elements, as in inorganic chemistry, but on the radicals. The radicals in organic chemistry act analogous to the elements in mineral chemistry, with the same general principles of combination and reaction."(Partington "Breakthroughs" 1837 C).

MINKOWSKI, HERMANN. - DOCTORIAL THESIS

First printing of Minkowski's doctorial dissertation, which he received from Königsberg."From his Grand Prix paper (on five squares integers) to his last work Minkowski never ceased to return to the arithmetic of quadratic forms in n variables ("n-ary forms"). Ever since Gauss' pioneering work on binary quadratic forms at the beginning of the nineteenth century, the generalization of his results to n-ary forms had been the goal of many mathematicians including Eisenstein, Hermite, Smith, Jordan, and Poincaré. Minkowski' most importent contributions to the theory were for quadratic forms with rational coefficients, through a system of three invariants of the form and (in a later paper) a paper from 1905."(DSB).

Dulong & Petit's paper: pp. 240-263. Some brownspots to title-page and a stamp on verso. A few scattered brownspots. First apperance of this (their first) joint paper, which initiated the recheches leading, the year after, to the "Law of Dulong and Petit", the connection between atomic weight and atomic heat."In 1815 Dulong’s famous collaboration with the mathematical physicist Alexis Thérèse Petit began; it produced three important memoirs on heat (of which this is the first). The best-known part of this work is the statement of the law of constant atomic heats that bears their names, .... They began with the fundamental problem of measuring quantities of heat, which involved a critical analysis of thermometric scales. In 1804-1805 Gay-Lussac had carried out a comparison of mercury and air thermometers between 0°C. and 100°C. Dulong and Petit extended the range of comparison up to 300°C. and found an increasing discrepancy between the two scales at higher temperatures." (DSB).

(Paris, Gauthier-Villars), 1891. 4to. No wrappers. In: "Comptes Rendus Hebdomadaires des Séances de L'Academie des Sciences", Tome 113, No 2. Pp. (49-) 104 (entire issue offered). Langley's paper: pp. 59-63. Disbound but clean. Tear to one margin, not affecting the text. First appearnce of this pioneering paper in which Langley announced that it is possible, with the motors that we now have, to keep a plane in the air with large speed. In 1891 Langley experimented with steam-engine powered Aerodromes, beginning the series which would lead to the human-carrying machine of 1903. The first of these was designated Aerodrome No. 0 and proved a failure. The second machine, Aerodrome No. 1, was powered by a carbonic acid gas and later by compressed air. Aerodrome No. 2, also built in 1891 was also a disappointment. Aerodrome No. 3 (1892) was of stronger construction and was modified a number of times. A better means of heating the steam was tested on Aerodrome No. 3 and was a decided improvement and was incorporated into Aerodrome No. 4. By the end of 1893 Aerodrome No. 4 was ready for testing and a launching device atop a house boat was built.

BREWSTER, DAVID - POLARIZATION BY PRESSURE AND HEAT.
Herman H. J. Lynge & Søn A/S
lyn45874
(London, W. Bulmer and Co., 1815). 4to. No wrappers as extracted from "Philosophical Transactions" 1815 - Part I. Pp. 60-64. First appearance of an importent paper in optical mineralogy in which Brewster describes his discovery of the phenomena of double refraction caused by compression.During his investigations on the polarization of light, Brewster quite unexpectedly observed that heat and pressure could produce or change a doubly refracting structure in uncrystallized, crystallized, or organic bodies. Moreover, from the geometry of the interference patterns he deduced equations that permitted him to predict the shapes, numbers, and colors of patterns that would be produced by changes in configuration, temperature, pressure, and method of observation.Brewster was the discoverer of the law of polarization, of biaxal crystals, of optical mineralogy, and of double refraction by compression.

First apperance of these two groundbreaking papers constituting the famous "Franck-Hertz Experiments" giving the first experimental determination of Planck's constant not using blackbody radiation."Thus, the experiments by Franck and hertz were later considered as a new and independent support not only of Planck's quantum theory and Einstein's light-quantum hypothesis, but also of Bohr's theory of the atom with sationary states of discrete energies. In 1926 Franck and Hertz were awardedthe Nobel prize for 1925."(Siegmund Brandt "The Harvest of a century", Episode 25, p. 102).The Nobel Prize were given "for their discovery of the laws governing the impact of an electron upon an atom".

Paris, Jean Boudot, 1706. 4to. Without wrappers. Extracted from "Mémoires de l'Academie des Sciences. Année 1705". Pp. 176-186 and 1 folded engraved plate. First appearance of a founding paper in the theory of elastic curves. "Importent also is his last work, on the resistance of elastic bodies (1705)." (DSB II, p.49 s)."During the last quarter of the seventeenth century and the beginning of the eighteenth centuries a rapid development of the infinitesimal calculus took place. Started on the Continent by Leibnitz...it progresssed principally by the work of Jacob and John Bernoulli. In trying to expand the field of application of this new mathematical tool, they discussed several examples from mechanics and physics. One such example treated by Jacob Bernouilli..concerned the shape of the deflection curve of an elastic bar and in this way he began an importent chapter inthe mechanics of elastic bodies."(Timoshenko "History of Strenght of Materials" p. 25-26).

Leipzig, B. G. Teubner, 1905. 8vo. In the original printed wrappers, without backstrip. In "Mathematische Annalen, 61. Band, 1. Heft, 1905". Fine and clean. [Klein:] Pp. 50-71; Pp. 72-76. [Entire issue: IV, 160 pp]. First printing of Felix Klein's paper on how to solve fifth and sixth degree equations. Klein considered equations of degree > 4, and was especially interested in using transcendental methods to solve the general equation of the fifth degree. Building on the methods of Hermite and Kronecker, he produced similar results to those of Brioschi and went on to completely solve the problem by means of the icosahedral group. This work led him to write a series of papers on elliptic modular functions, the present paper being one of the last and concluding. As editor of Mathematische Annalen Felix Klein set himself the task of collecting previously unstudied material of Gauss. He organized a campaign to collect materials and enlisted experts in special fields to study them. From 1898 until 1922 he rallied support with fourteen reports, published under the title "Bericht über den Stand der Herausgabe von Gauss' Werken,". The present being the sixth.
