Gotha, Justis Perthes, 1887. Folio. Bound in embossed green cloth with gilt lettering to front board. Last two maps loosely inserted. Last map with a bit of marginal paper loss, the map is untouched. Back board with two small stains, otherwise a fine and clean copy. 6 pp. + 8 double-page coloured maps. First edition of Drude's important and early work on plant distribution. The earliest botanists (systematic botanists) were arranging the plants of the world into classes, families, genera, and species while plant geographers are concerned with the geographic distribution of plant species.Alexander Von Humboldt is usually regarded as being the father of this discipline, the present work, however, being one of the earliest examples of an atlas entirely dedicated to the geography of plants.

CANTOR, G.

[Berlin, Stockholm, Paris, F. & G. Beijer, 1883]. 4to. Without wrappers as extracted from "Acta Mathematica. Hrdg. von G. Mittag-Leffler.", Bd. 2. Fine and clean. Pp. 381-414. First French translation (and translation in general) of Cantor's fifth, thus most important, paper in his series of papers which founded set theory. (The first mentioned). It contained Cantor's reply to the criticism of the first four papers and showed how the transfinite numbers were a systematic extension of the natural numbers. It begins by defining well-ordered sets. Ordinal numbers are then introduced as the order types of well-ordered sets. Cantor then defines the addition and multiplication of the cardinal and ordinal numbers. In 1885, Cantor extended his theory of order types so that the ordinal numbers simply became a special case of order types. It was later published as a separate monograph. The concept of the existence of an infinity was an important shared concern within the realms of mathematics, philosophy and religion. Preserving the orthodoxy of the relationship between God and mathematics was long a concern of Cantor's. He directly addressed this relationship between these disciplines in the introduction to the present paper, where he stressed the connection between his view of the infinite and the philosophical one. To Cantor, his mathematical views were closely linked to their philosophical and theological implications-he identified the Absolute Infinite with God and he considered his work on transfinite numbers to have been directly communicated to him by God, who had chosen Cantor to reveal them to the world.

London, Harrison and Sons, 1904. 8vo. Later full buckram. Spine with gilt lettering. In: "Proceedings of the Royal Society", Vol. 73. VIII,548 pp. a. 11 plates. (Entire volume offered). Bayliss & Starling's paper: pp. 310-322. A stamp to edges, otherwise clean. First printing of this paper in which they developed the theory of hormonal control of the internal secretion, a milestone discovery by Bayliss and Starling in 1902, which introduced a quite new field in physiology and medicine, the discovery of the FIRST HORMONE, which the they named "Secretin". They here tries to find out how this new body could be decribed chemically, and one of the conclusions were "It is not precipitated by tannic acid, thus excluding bodies of alkaloid nature as well as di-amido compounds. This evidence, slight thought it is, points to secretin being a body of relatively small molecular weight and not a colloid. It may be compared to the active principle of the suprarenal glands, adrenalin, which has been obtained in a crystallic form and the cemical constitution of which has been approximately determined..."(p. 314-15).Garrison & Morton: 1121.
