Moguntiae (Mainz), Balthasarum Lippium, 1603. 4to ( 250 x 195 mm). In contemporary full calf with five raised bands and richly gilt spine. Traces from old paper-label to upper part of spine. Light wear to extremities. A few leaves, including the title-page with repairs in upper margin, otherwise a nice copy. (8), 782, (14) pp. Second edition of Toledo’s commentary and annotations on Paul letters to the Romans. “Toletus was born in Spain into a family of humble origins, probably of Jewish or Moorish descent. He studied philosophy at Zaragoza or Valencia and theology at Salamanca. His professor of theology, Domingo De Soto, characterized him as an intellectual prodigy, and, indeed, by age fifteen Toletus held a chair in philosophy (Campbell 1921, 112–13). He entered the Jesuit order in 1558 and taught at the prestigious Collegio Romano in Rome, where future Jesuit teachers were trained. From 1559 to 1562 he taught philosophy there, and from 1562 to 1569, theology. From 1571 onward he was sent on various diplomatic missions, including one in 1596 to convert Henry IV of France (Schmitt and Skinner 1988, 838). Toletus became the first Jesuit cardinal in 1593 (Van Ackeren 2003, 102). His accomplishments were both political and intellectual. In 1595 he persuaded Pope Clement to grant Henry IV absolution, which established peace in France (Campbell 1921, 113).” (Hattab, Toletus, Franciscus (Francisco de Toledo) (1532–1596))

BREWSTER, DAVID. - ON BIFRINGENCE IN GLASS.
Herman H. J. Lynge & Søn A/S
lyn42801
(London, W. Bulmer and Co., 1816). 4to. No wrappers as extracted from "Philosophical Transactions" 1816 - Part I. Pp. 46-114 and 4 engraved plates. A small brownspot outside image in right margin of plates. Clean and fine. First printing of an importent paper in the history of optics describing the photoeleasticity of glass. In the paper Brewster describes numerous investigations of birefringent glass. While Seebeck related birefringence of glass to its internal structure, Brewster considered heat as the cause of birefringence. The paper is a very thorough investigation of refringence in glass with numerous examples. To illustrate, Fig. 3 shows photoelastic patterns of a thick quadratic plate. Brewster actually comes close to the real reason of birefringence in glass: "I have discovered that glass, and all other substances that have not the property of double refraction, are capable of receiving it from mechanical pressure, and that a compressing force always produces the structure which givesthe exterior fringes in crystallized glass, while a dilating force produces the structure which develops the interior fringes." Brewster suggests that glass should be carefully examined by polarized lightbefore it is purchased.Together with the Brewster-paper comes a paper by John Frederick W. Herschel: "On the development of exponential functions; together with several new theorems relating to finite differences." Pp. 25-45.

Den sjældne originaludgave af et af Treschows vigtigste filosofiske værker. The scarce first edition of one of Treschow's most important philosophical works.Niels Treschow (1751 - 1833) is generally accepted as the most important Norwegian philosopher before the 20th century. He played a prominent role in the development of hilosophy in Scandinavia in the late 18th and far into the 19th century. He was the first professor of Philosophy at the University of Christiania (today Oslo) (from 1813), and before that he had been professor of Philosophy at the University of Copenhagen (from 1803 till 1813), where he played a very important role, changing the tradition of philosophy in Scandinavia by being one of the first teachers of philosophy, who was also a philosopher himself. His lectures and works were of seminal character, and his way of thinking cleared a path for later important philosophers. He became "Ridder af Dannebrog" (an honorary title, -"Knight of Dannebrog" (Dannbrog being the Danish flag), and he was a member of both the Norwegian and the Danish Academies of Science.Treschow was especially fond of the German rationalists and romantics as well as of English Empiricism, which played a great role in his own philosophy. He was never very influenced by Kant's critical philosophy, and his own philosophy was to a large extemt governed by emotions and intuition, -he was never afraid to think according to his feelings.Apart from being a philosopher, Treschow was also a politician of some influence under the first Norwegian government.Treschow wrote a number of important works, the present being one of the most important ones. All of his works are scarce and sought after, and they rarely appear on the market.

KNIGHT, THOMAS ANDREW. - INTRODUCING GEOTROPISM IN PLANT GROWTH.
Herman H. J. Lynge & Søn A/S
lyn46390
(London, W. Bulmer and Co., 1806). 4to. No wrappers as extracted from "Philosophical Transactions" 1806. With titlepage to 1806, Part I. Pp. 99-108. With a stamp on verso of titlepage. First apperance of a milestone paper in plant physiology as the concept of tropistic behaviour arose from the experiments described in this paper. Knight showed that forces, generated by means of a water-wheel, made roots and shoots of seedlings orient themselves to centrifugal forces, just as they do to gravity.Knight's investigations on geotropism "enabled Knight to distinguish between geotropic and hydrotropic reactions of the root, and opened the whole question of tropic responses, of their physical basis and adaptive significance in the lfe of plants."(Morton, "History of Botanical Science", p. 390.)."His most famous work was on what are now called geotropisms. In a letter read by Banks to the Royal Society in 1806, Knight described how he eliminated the influence of gravitation on germinating seeds: He attached them at various angles to the rim of a vertical wheel which was driven by a stream in his garden to revolve continuously at a rate of 150 r.p.m. As the germinating plants grew, each shoot was directed to the center of the wheel; when a shoot passed the center of the wheel its tip turned back so that growth was still centripetal; the roots grew away from the center. Next he set up a similar structure with the wheel horizontal and rotating at 250 r.p.m. so that the seedlings were influenced by both gravitation of the earth an the centrifugal force. In this case, growth was at an angle of 80° to the vertical, the shoot upward and inward, and the root downward and out. Reducing the rotation to 80 r.p.m. decreased the centrifugal force to such an extent that the plants grew at an angle of 45° to the vertical."(DSB).

BERNOULLI, (JOHANN I) - THE TAUTOCRONE CURVE IN A MEDIA.
Herman H. J. Lynge & Søn A/S
lyn46599
(Paris, L'Imprimerie Royale, 1732). 4to. Without wrappers. Extracted from "Mémoires de l'Academie des Sciences. Année 1730". Pp. 78-101. First printing of Johann Bernoulli's importent paper in which he for the first time (Euler did it at the same time) solved the problem of finding the tautochrone in a medium that resists a body's motion directly as the square of the body's speed. After Huygens first discovered that the cylcoid was a tautochronous curve in vacuo according to the hypothesis of uniform gravity; Newton and Hermann have also given tautochrones following the hypothesis of non-uniform gravity acting, and pulling towards some fixed point as centre. Moreover, they have considered the motion to arise in a vacuum, with no resistance. Truly pertaining to resisting media, Newton has also shown that the cycloid is a tautochrone in a medium for which the resistance is proportional tothe speed; moreover, as far as any other kinds resisting media are concerned, there has been no progress made either in roducing the curves themselves or in demonstrating possible tautochronism in them [The 3rd edition of the Principia that Euler refers to finally in §35 alters this view to include the type of resistance offered here. It may be of interest to the reader to observe that Johan. Bernoulli published a paper in the Memoire de l'Acad. Roy. des Sciences in 1730, also present in his Opera Omnia, T. III, p.173, with the title (in tra. from French): Method for Finding Tautochrones in Media Resisting as the Square of the Speed; in which Euler does not get a mention.].
