London, Humphrey Milford, 1939. 8vo. Offprint in the original printed wrappers. Uncut. Ex-libris [Danish philosopher Carl Henrik Koch] pasted on to verso of front wrapper. Wrappers with various nicks and bumped corners and some miscolouring to boarders. Internally with a few occasional very light pencil markings in margin. 30. (1) pp. First edition of Moore's important paper on the existence of an external world. In "Moore's most famous paper, his 'Proof of an External World' [...] [he] sets himself the task of doing what Kant had earlier set himself to do, namely providing a proof of the existence of 'external objects'. Much of the lecture is devoted to working out what counts as an 'external object', and Moore claims that these are things whose existence is not dependent upon our experience. So, he argues, if he can prove the existence of any such things, then he will have proved the existence of an 'External World'. Moore then maintains that he can do this"(SEP): "By holding up my two hand, 'Here is one hand' and adding, as I make a certain gesture with the left, 'and here is another'.(p. 25). [...] But did I prove just now that two human hands were then in existence? I do want to insist that I did; that the proof which I gave was a perfectly rigorous one; and that it is perhaps impossible to give a better or more rigorous proof of anything whatever".

Berlin, Gruyter & Co., 1931. 4to. Orig. printed orange wrappers. Offprint/Sonderausgabe aus Sitzungsberichten....pp.(1)-5. Fine fresh copy. First edition in the rare Offprint with the separate printed title and separate pagination. See Weil No. 179, where this is not mentioned. The early Offprints from "Sitzungsberichten..." are called "Sonderabdruck" up to Weil No.165 (including this). From Weil 166 they are called "Sonderausgabe...". - Before 161 (up to 160) the Offprints do not have separate title and pagination (the pagination follows the numbering in the periodical). From 166 the Offprint has both separate printed title and pagination. - ( So Weil Nos 161-165 is still "Abdruck", but with separate title and pagination). These facts are not mentioned in the bibliographies.

(London, Taylor and Francis, 1874-76). 4to. No wrappers as extracted from "Philosophical Transactions" Year 1874, Vol. 164 - Part II. Pp. 501-527, textillustrations, showing his experimental equipment. And 1875 - II. Vol. 165. Pp. 519-547 and textillustr. showing experimental equipment. First appearance of an importent historical paper in the investigations of radiation from cathode rays. This is Crookes first 2 papers on attraction and repulsion. In the same year he invented the "light-mill"."While working with his balance in a vacuum, Crookes noticed another "anomaly": the equilibrium of the balance was disturbed by slight differences in temperature of his samples. Inparticular he noticed that warmer bodies appeared to be lighter than colder ones:....At first Crookes believed this was a signpost pointing to a link between heat and gravitation....Since the attraction or repulsion was heighned by a decrease in pressure, Crookes was led s to suppose in 1873 that "the movement is due to a repulsive action of radiation" Repulsion was produced not only by heat radiation but also by light, and Crookes concluded - erraneously, as it turned out - that he had found a genuine case of "the pressure of light" postulated by the unfashionable corpuscular theory of light and Maxwell's as yet unaccepted electromagnetic theory."(DSB III:477).Sir William Crookes (1832-1919) studied at the Royal College of Chemistry , London, and served there as an assistant to Hoffmann. In 1859 he founded the Chemical News and remained its proprietor and editor until his death. he early attracted attentuion by his discovery of the element thallium by spectroscopic methods. he was an active investigator in many fields of physics and contributed greatly to the advance of knowledge by his study of the radiometer and of the electric discharge in rarefied gases. -(PMM: 386 describing J.J. Thomson's Cathode Rays). - Magee, Source Book in Physics p. 564 ff.

ORWELL, GEORGE.
Herman H. J. Lynge & Søn A/S
lyn51246
Vilhelm Priors Forlag, 1947. Uncut in the original wrappers. Wrappers with a few nicks and a tears. 10 cm long tear to spine. Internally fine and clean. First Danish edition of one of the most important literary works of the 20th century, the satirical-political masterpiece that so magnificently reflects the events leading up to the Russian Revolution and brilliantly caricatures Stalinism. As Orwell himself put it, with this work, he deliberately tried "to fuse political purpose and artistic purpose into one whole". (Orwell, "Why I Write"). "Animal Farm" brilliantly portrays not only the corruption of the revolution, but also how traits of human character themselves corrupt society. The greatest flaw of revolution is not the corrupt leadership on its own, but also the greed, indifference, ignorance, shortsightedness, wickedness, etc. that govern the individuals that make up the masses. The work was written between late 1943 and early 1944, when the wartime alliance with the Soviet Union was at its height and Stalin was held in highest esteem in Britain, among both the people and intelligentsia. Not surprisingly, it was initially rejected by both British and American publishers, and the publication of it was thus delayed. When it did appear (1945), it became a great commercial success, however, probably not least due to the soon to follow Cold War. The work is generally considered one of the best and most influential literary productions of the 20th century.

Stockholm, P.A. Norstedt, 1894 & 1895. 8vo. Both works uncut, unopened in the original printed wrappers. No. 8, Vol.19 of 'Bihang till K. Svenska Vet.Akad. Handlingar & No. 6, Vol.20 of 'Bihang till K. Svenska Vet.Akad. Handlinga. Wrappers with a few nicks, otherwise two very fine and clean copies. 50 pp. + 4 plates; 41 pp. + 4 plates. First edition of Arrhenius' and Ekholm's two papers on the lunar influences on atmospheric electricity. Svante Arrhenius (1859-1927) was a prominent chemist and one of the founders of the science of physical chemistry. He was awarded the 1903 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for the pioneering work which he had done in his famous dissertation on electrolytic conductivity ('Recherches sur la conductivité galvanique des électrolytes', 1884). However Arrhenius is becoming increasingly more known for his discovery of the greenhouse effect and its influence on global temperature.Papers from this supplement series to the 'Proceedings of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences' are often mistakenly identified as offprints or 'first seperate edition' (indicating the existence of a jounal edition) because they have their own title page with the publishers named and their own pagination, but they are not - all publications from this series were printed seperatley in this way and issued with wrappers.
