First apperance of an importent work in mineralogy in which Chenevix strongly advocates the specifications of Haüy, taking the physical condition of the surface as the guiding principle in mineralogical classification, disputing the system of Werner. Later the work appered in a separate form, and it was also published in English in 1811."In these years he published a significant paper, "Sur quelques méthodes minéralogiques" (1808), in which he disputed Abraham Gottlob Werner’s classification of minerals by their chemical composition. He himself adopted R. J. Haüy’s criterion of classification, the physical characteristics of minerals."(DSB)

Paris, Jean Boudot, 1702. 4to. Without wrappers. Extracted from "Mémoires de l'Academie des Sciences". Année 1699. With the fine engraved frontispiece and the titlepage to the volume. (22) pp.. Stamped in blind on the 2 first leaves, in margins. First appearance of Fontenelle's famous program for the philosophy of science of the Enlightment, stipulating the nature of scientific research in terms of the analytical geometry."From 1699 to 1740 Fontenelle devoted himself almost exclusively to his task of editing the Histoire de l’Académie royale des sciences . . . avec les mémoires de mathématique et de physique pour la même année, tirés des registres de cette Académie. The volume for the year 1699, which appeared in 1702, opens with an untitled preface usually called "Préface [sometimes "Discours préliminaire"] sur l’utilitë des mathématiques et de la physique et sur les travaux de l’Académie (the paper offered), which contains essential material on the philosophy of science and is a sort of bridge between Descartes’s Discours de la méthode and Claude Bernard’s Introduction à l’étude de la médecine expérimentale. Here one finds the first literary expression of the idea of the interdependence of the sciences and of the constancy of the laws of nature."

First appearance of Wien's importent paper in which he shows that the cathode rays are particles, that their velocity is about a third to that of light and he establish the ratio between the mass and the charge. In the paper are "described the experiments by which Wien determined the properties of the canal rays. The firstpart of the paper conatins a description of observations on the cathode rays, made with a Lenard Tube, in which the cathode rays passed through an aluminium window into an extension of the tube where as high a rarefaction as possible was maintained. The magnetic and electrostatic deflexions of a narrow cathode stream were observed and Wien concludes that it is proved by his investigation that the cathode rays which pass through the windoww carry with them strong negative charges."(Magie "Souce Book in Physics", p. 597 ff.).Wien was awarded the 1911 Nobel Prize for physics for his discoveries regarding laws governing the radiation of heat.

Moissan's paper: pp. 1031-1033.nA few small tears to frontpage. First printing of the paper in which Moissan described his famous invention of the Electric Furnace and hereby laying the foundations for high-temperature chemistry. For this invention and his isolation of flourine Moissan received the Nobel Prize in 1906."Moissan had turned his attention to the production of artificial diamonds and in the process constructed his famous electric furnace, which, although simple in design, proved to be a technological tool of the first order. The original model, which he subsequently improved, was demonstrated to the Academy of Sciences in December 1892 (the paper offered). It consisted of two blocks of lime, one laid on the other, with a hollow space in the center for a crucible, and a longitudinal groove for two carbon electrodes which produced a high-temperature electric arc. In one experiment Moissan heated iron and carbonized sugar in his electric furnace, causing the carbon to dissolve in the molten iron..... Moissan’s electric furnace provided great impetus to the development of high-temperature chemistry. With this apparatus he prepared and studied refractory oxides, silicides, borides, and carbides; he succeeded in volatilizing many metals; and, by reducing metallic oxides with carbon, he obtained such metals as manganese, chromium, uranium, tungsten, vanadium, molybdenum, titanium, and zirconium. The electrochemical and metallurgical applications to industry of Moissan’s work became immediately apparent, for example in the large-scale production of acetylene from calcium carbide."(DSB).Moissan received the Nobel prize in Chemistry in 1906 "in recognition of the great services rendered by him in his investigation nd isolation of the element fluorine, and for the adoption in the service of science of the electric furnace called after him".Parkinson "Breakthroughs" 1892 C.This issue also contains another notable paper by PIERRE CURIE in which he describes his invention of a quadrant electrometer that improved upon the one devised by Kelvin by adding an ingenious magnetic damper.

(Berlin, G. Reimer, 1829). 4to. No wrappers. Extracted from "Journal für die reine und angewandte Mathematik. Hrsg. von A.L. Crelle", Bd. 4. - Plücker's paper pp. 349-370 First edition of a major paper in the arithmetization of geometry introducing the so-called triangular coordinates. "In 1829 Plücker contributed to Crelle's Journal (the paper offered here) with a revolutionary point of view that broke completely with the old Cartesian view of coordinates as line segments. The equation of a straight line in homogenous coordinates has the form ax + by + ct=0....Plücker saw that one could modify the usual language and call (a,b,c) the homogenous coordinates of a line....Plücker had discovered the immidiate analytic counterpart of the geometric principle of duality, about which Gergonne and Poncelet had quarreled; it now became clear that the justification that pure geometry had sought in vain was here supplied by the algebraic point of view." (Boyer, History of Mathematics).
