(Leipzig, Johann Ambrosius Barth, 1876) Without wrappers. In "Annalen der Physik und Chemie. Hrsg. von J.C. Poggendorff", Ergänzungsband VII, Stück 2. Pp. 177-336 a. 1 folded engraved plate. (Entire issue offered). Clausius's paper: pp. 215-280. Clean and fine. First appearance of an importent contribution to the second law of thermodynamics."Ckausius..devoted several years to the elaboration of what he thought represented a new and unique contribution to theoretical mechanics, his idea of a variation in the force function itself. He ignored the new directions in Boltzmann's yhought and, surprisingly, never once thought to find a mechanical explanation for the irreversible increase in entropy. In fact in his final attempt (the paper offered), he even adopted a model in which he reduced the admittedly disordered collissions of molecules to a case of noncolliding mass points in ordered motion."(DSB III, p. 309).

Paris, Crochard, 1823. No wrappers. In: "Annales de Chimie et de Physique, Par MM. Gay-Lussac et Arago.", tome 22 (Cahier 4), With titlepage to vol. 22. Pp. 337-444. (Entire issue offered). Oersted & Fourier's paper: pp. 375-389 and 1 folded engraved plate. showing apparatus used. First appearance of this importent paper - which can bee seen as the precursor of OHM'S LAW - in which Ørsted explains the experiments he did together with Fourier on the thermo-electric effects discovered by Seebeck. They proved with different experiments, that the effect depended solely on the heating of the plates in the voltaic arrangements. Ørsted calls Seebech's observations "the most beautiful of the discoveries which have as yet grown out of mine (his discovery of electromagnetism three years before)""We learn from his letters that thet the experiments on which the paper was founded had taken him 3 weeks, a space of time which evidently much too short for the performance of the work; thus Ørsted himself points out a fundamental flaw in the experiments, but there has been no time to remedy it. The work is of interest, both by what has been gained through it, and by what does not plainly appear; in some of its results it is the precursor of Ohm's law and by its defects it shows how great was the feat of the actual discovery of this law."(Kirstine Meyer).

Leipzig & Berlin, B.G. Teubner, 1932. 8vo. A mint copy, in the original wrappers, still contained in the original plastic protection. In "Ergebnisse eines mathematischen Kolloquiums, unter Mitwirkung von Kurt Gödel und Georg Nöbeling, herausgegeben von Karl Manger, Heft 2". Pp. 27-28. [Entire volume: 38 pp]. First edition of Gödel's important paper, which constitutes a supplement to his "Die Vollständigkeit der Axiome des logischen Funktionskalküls" (1930). In the present paper, Gödel seminally formulates his earlier incompleteness results from the standpoint of first-order logic, thereby contributing substantially to modern mathematical logic."In 1932 Godel published his formulation of the incompleteness results from the standpoint of first order logic. If number theory is regarded as a formal system in first-order logic, then the above results about incompleteness and unprovability of consistency apply to S. If, however, S is extended by variables for sets of numbers, for sets of sets of numbers, and so on (together with the corresponding comprehension axioms), then we obtain a sequence of systems S; the consistency of each system is provable in all subsequent systems. But in each subsequent system there are undecidable propositions. Going up in type in this way, he noted, corresponds in a type-free system of set theory to adding axioms that postulate the existence of larger and larger infinite cardinalities. This was the beginning of Gödel's interest in large cardinal axioms, an interest that he elaborated in 1947 in regard to the continuum problem." (DSB).The issue contains several papers by Karl Menger.

Pp. 129-256 and pp. 129-256. Cerhardt's papers: pp. 129-143 a. pp. 238-245. The salicine-paper: pp. 215-229 (tome 7). With halftitlepages to vol. 7 and 8. First appearance of Gerhardt's first papers on the new concept of "homology", perhaps his most notable contribution to organic chemistry."Gerhardt’s most conspicuous contribution to the developemfent of organic chemistry was his homologous series. His earliest publications were characterized by attempts to arrange organic compounds in series of increasing complexity: his "ladder of combustion," rising from water and carbon dioxide at the foot to albumin and fibrin at the summit, was analogue of the biologists’ ladder of nature, another biological analogy was to underlie the application of his homologous series when they were refined in 1843: Gerhardt presupposed a principle of plenitude in organic chemistry which dictated that hitherto undocumented members of any series must exist. In addition, the concept of homology itself was of biological origin, deriving from Cuvier. For Gerhardt, however, it did not carry that structural connotation which it had for Cuvier. On this subject Gerhardt, simply asserted: "We call substances homologues when they exhibit the same chemical properties and when there are analogies in the relative proportions of their elements."
