(London, W. Bulmer and Co., 1814). 4to. No wrappers as extracted from "Philosophical Transactions" 1814 - Part I. Pp. 219-230 and 1 engraved plate. Fine and clean. First appearance of this pioneer work in the optical theory of polarization and double refraction by "The discoverer of the law of polarization, of biaxal crystals, of optical mineralogy, and of double refraction by compression.""Since Brewster had found that light was partially polarized by oblique refraction in mica, he attempted to determine the law of this polarization in he simpler case of successive refractions by a pile of thin glass plates. By the end of 1813 he had concluded that "the number of plates in any parcel, multiplied by the tangent of the angle, at which it (completely) polarises light, is a constant quantity" (in the paper offered here p. 221). More importent, since "the pencil of light polarised by transmission (comports) itself, in every respect like one of the pencils former by double refracting crystals" (the paper offered p. 219), study of the physical optics of transparent ought to enable philosophers "to unfold the secrets of double refraction, to explain the forms and structure of crystallised bodies...."(DSB).

Offprints from "The Bell System Technical Journal", Vol. V. The offprints separately paginated: 16 pp. and 12 pp. The first clean and fine, the second with light wear to wrappers. First editions in the offprint issues of two of Shewhart's main papers that reveals the evolution of his thinking and methods on the way to founding the science of statistical quality control or statistical proces control."Shewhart was concerned that statistical theory serve the needs of industry. He exhibited the restlessness of one looking for a better way. A man of science who patiently developed and tested his ideas and the ideas of others, he was an astute observer of developments in the world of science and technology. While the literature of the day discussed the stochastic nature of both biological and technical systems, and spoke of the possibility of applying statistical methodology to these systems, Shewhart actually showed how it was to be done; in that respect, the field of quality control can claim a genuine pioneer in Shewhart. His monumental work, Economic Control of Quality of Manufactured Product, published in 1931, is regarded as a complete and thorough exposition of the basic principles of quality control" (ASQ).

CAGNIARD-LATOUR, CHARLES. - A CLASSIC PAPER ON YEAST.
Herman H. J. Lynge & Søn A/S
lyn43120
Paris, Crochard, 1838. No wrappers as extracted from "Annales de Chimie et de Physique", 2. Series, Tome 68. Pp. 206-222. First appearance of this classic paper on yeast, which summarises his work on alcoholic fermentation, proving that the process depended on living organisms as a mass of globular bodies capable of reproduction and therefore organized, and not a simple chemical substance as had been supposed."Cagniard's studies on alcoholic fermentation have unquestionably remained the most valuable of his works. Begun as early as 1835, they led him, toward the end of 1836. to see that there was certainly a living substance in brewer's yeast. Schwann came to the same conclusion at the same time, but Liebig's violent attacks forced this point of view into the background for twenty years. (It was in 1857 that Pateur shed light on the question)."(DSB III, p. 9-10)."The earliest demonstration of the true nature of yeast was made by Cagniac-Latour in 1836. All his work on the subject is summed up in this paper."(Garrison & Morton No 675).

First edition. In this importent paper Euler perfection Segner's hydraulic turbine, giving the theory of hydraulic turbines created in accordence with the principle of action and reaction."In this work, Euler gives a complete hydraulic analysis, an early example of the theory of relative motion. He also shows that very high speeds are necessary for good efficiency. He argues that "by means of fixed conducting tubes, adjust the incoming velocity of the water so that the speed of efflux relative to the rotor is zero;" in this way, the theorietical efficiency will be "100% at the desired speed of operation.""(Truesdell).Enestroem: 179.

Along with this, he worked on problems of hydrotechnology, discussed, in part, above. Especially remarkable were the improvements he introduced into the design of a hydraulic machine imagined by Segner in 1749 and the theory of hydraulic turbines, which he created in accordance with the principle of action and reaction (1752-1761)."(DSB).Eneström E 207.

First appearance of an importent paper, having the same title as his famous paper from 1845, in which he discusses problems relating to his discovery of the first law of thermo-dynamics and the principle of the conservation of energy."In December of 1840 he presented a paper to the Royal Society on the production of heat by the electric current. His course of thought led him to the consideration of the relatio between heat and and mechanical work. The results of his investigations were embodied in a series of papers which culminated in his great memoir on the mechanical equivalent of heat, published in 1850. Joule was one of the founders of the principle of the cosservation of energy. Some of his work was done in collaboration with Lord Kelvin."(Source Book in Physics p. 203).
