lyn32705
Berlin, Julius Springer, 1928. 8vo. Publisher's full cloth. Ink signature of Samuel Skulsky on front free end paper. Completely clean throughout. A fine and tight copy. First edition of the foundation of modern mathematical logic. In the years 1917-22 Hilbert gave three seminal courses at the Univeristy og Göttingen on logic and the foundation of mathematics. He received considerable help in preperation and eventual write up of these lectures from Bernays. This material was subsequently reworked by Ackermann into the monograph 'Grundzüge der Theoretischen Logik' (the offered item). It containes the first exposition ever of first-order logic and poses the problem of its completeness and the decision problem ('Entscheidungsproblem'). The first of these questions was answered just a year later by Kurt Gödel in his doctorial dissertation 'Die Vollständigkeit der Axiome des logischen Funktionenkalküls'. This result is known as Gödel's completeness theorem. Two years later Gödel published his famous 1931 paper 'Über formal unentscheidbare Sätze der Principia Mathematica und verwandter Systeme I' in which he showed that a stronger logic, capable of modeling arithmetic, is either incomplete or inconsistent (Gödel's second incompleteness theorem). The later question posed by Hilbert and Ackermann regarding the decision problem was answered in 1936 independantly by Alonzo Church and Allan Turing. Church used his model the lambda-calculus and Turing his machine model to construct undecidable problems and show that the decision problem is unsolvable in first-order logic. These results by Gödel, Church, and Turing rank amongst the most important contributions to mathematical logic ever. Scarce in this condition.

PUFENDORFF, BARON DE.
Herman H. J. Lynge & Søn A/S
lyn61929
Amsterdam, Coup, 1748. 8vo. In contemporary full calf with five raised bands, richly gilt spine and gilt super ex-libris to front board. Wear and soiling to extremities, two large scratches with loss of leather to front board. Leather on spine cracked and spine-ends chipped. Internally nice and clean. XLIX, 252, (3), 256, 523 pp. Sixth French translation of Pufendorf's second main work, his seminal "On the Duty of Man and Citizen ", which became extremely influential during the Enlightenment of the 18th century and had a great impact on legal, moral, constitutional, and political thinking, not only in Europe, but also in America. It was perhaps more influential than the work which is usually considered Pufendorf's main work, namely his "De jure naturae et gentium" from 1672, which is longer and more elaborate, though, or perhaps exactly therefore, the present work must be said to be the one that came to exercise the greatest impact and came to spread Pufendorf's thought, not least his concept of "natural law" and his analysis of just war theory (which he gives in the present work), throughout Europe and America. It is the present work "that guaranteed him a place in university curricula for a century." (SEP).

Herman H. J. Lynge & Søn A/S
lyn62358
Herman H.J. Lynge & Søn, printed by Narayana Press, 2025. Large 4to (28 x 22 cm). Two volumes, in the original boards of black glitted paper with gilt lettering and single gilt lines to spines, in the style of Kierkegaard's original gift-bindings. Housed in the original black glitted slipcase with a frame of single gilt lines and gilt corner-pieces, also in pastiche-style. 445, 143 pp. + 4 pp. pricelist, loosely laid in at the end of vol. I. Richly illustrated throughout with excellent photos of each book. New, mint, and in the original plastic wrapper. The catalogue contains descriptions of 116 books, being Kierkegaard first editions, presentation-copies, books annotated by Kierkegaard, an original handwritten letter by Kierkegaard, books from Kierkegaard's library, and two books pertaining to Regine Olsen. SØREN AABYE KIERKEGAARD is one of the most important philosophers of all time. He is the father of existentialism, one of the main influences upon postmodernism and existential psychology, is responsible for many of the key concepts in philosophy today, and he just happens to be Danish. As a centuries old antiquarian book shop based in Kierkegaard’s hometown Copenhagen, and specialized in Philosophy, it is not a coincidence that Kierkegaard has always been one of our main specialties. We have arguably the strongest tradition in the world in dealing with first editions, presentation copies, association copies, and books that have belonged to Kierkegaard. And this not only in recent times. In his lifetime, Kierkegaard was a customer of Herman H.J. Lynge & Son, and it was our predecessor, the distinguished Herman H.J. Lynge, who made the auction catalogue of his book collection, when he died. Since the mid- 19th century, Herman H.J. Lynge and Søn has had a special relation to Kierkegaard’s books and has always dealt extensively in these. This is the first time, however, that we have made a large catalogue presentation of the very best items available, not only in Denmark, not only now, but in the whole world, and arguably ever. We dare say that there has never been as many Kierkegaard rarities for sale at once. We have been collecting these choice copies throughout some years, during which we have been lucky to acquire some excellent collections and individual copies, making this unique presentation possible. And we have chosen to sell the books individually instead of as a collection. In the present catalogue, we are thus paying tribute to the greatest thinker of our nation by presenting you with an array of the most interesting copies of books connected to Kierkegaard that one will possibly ever come by. Here presented is not only all of his works in first editions, but also in some of the finest and most interesting copies that one can come by; we have arguably the largest collection of Kierkegaard presentation-copies ever presented at once, several of his own copies of his own books, and possibly the largest collection of books that have belonged to Kierkegaard himself, both books that he has “merely” owned, and books that are inscribed to him. We also have a letter written by Kierkegaard, which is of the utmost scarcity. And finally, we have two books related to Kierkegaard’s fiancé, his muse Regine Olsen.
