First apperance of this importent memoir in which Fourier gives an account of the Physical theory of heat conduction and radiation."Fourier made observations on the heating power of the Sun and on night-time refrigeration. He conducted experiments on the heating and cooling of objects of different composition and shape, and on the transmission, absorption and reflection of radiant heat. He employed basic physical principles and formulated mathematical laws to explain and predict universal phenomena, such as ‘the progressive extinction of heat rays in the atmosphere." (James R. Cagniard-Latour's paper: pp. 905-905. First apperance of a milestone paper in biology in which Cagniard at the same time as Theodor Swann, and independently stated that yeast was a living thing. The first illuminating account of the yeast cell was given in 1836 by ... Cagniard-Latour... In a séance of the Societe philomatique... he dealt with the nature of beer yeast and its composition of non-motile globules. He stated that the globules were organized bodies probably belonging to the vegetable kingdom... A short résume of his work was given by Cagniard-Latour and was also published in the "Comptes Rendus Acad. des sciences" on 12 June 1837 (the paper offered). This communication is importent, for in it he stated his belief THAT IT WAS BY THE VITAL ACTIVITY OF THE YEAST CELLS THAT CARBONIC ACID AND ALCOOL WERE FORMED FROM THE SOLUTION OF SUGAR. All Cagniard-Latours work on yeast was finally summed up in his classic paper in the Annales de chimie et de phusique (1838)." (William Bulloch "The History of Bacteriology", pp. 46-48.

New York, American Telephone and Telegraph Company, 1946. 8vo. In the original printed blue wrappers. In "The Bell System Technical Journal", Volume XXV, Number 2, April 1946. Light miscolouring to spine and previous owner's name to front wrapper. Other wise a fine and clean copy. Pp. (4), 167-349. First printing of Bell Labs Magnetron issue. The Magnetron is a high-powered vacuum tube that through a stream of electrons in a magnetic field generates microwaves. This reduced the size of radar sets which made it possible to install them in anti-submarine aircrafts and escort ships. This had a profound influence on the warfare during WWII. Today magnetrons are commonly used in microwave ovens and in various radar applications."The studies of Fisk, H. D. Hagstrum, and P. L. Hartman [the present paper] increased the understanding of the role that the various possible modes of oscillation played in magnetron operation and the effect of the wire straps - which later evolved into two pair of concentric copper rings." GUDERMANN, CHRISTOPH.

(Berlin, G. Reimer, 1832) 4to. As extracted from "Journal für die reine und angewandte Mathematik, 8. Band, 1832", without backstrip. Fine and clean. pp. 64-116; Pp. 194-212. First printing of Gudermann extensive and important papers on hyperbolic functions. During 1830ies Gudermann focused his work on these functions and published extensive on the subject. It was later coined the Gudermannian function. The function was introduced by Johann Heinrich Lambert in the 1760s at the same time as the hyperbolic functions. He called it the "transcendent angle," and it went by various names until 1862 when Cayley suggested it be given its current name as a tribute to Gudermann's work in the 1830ies on the theory of special functions. The present paper together with two later published papers were collected in Theorie der potenzial- oder cyklisch-hyperbolischen functionen (1833), a book which expounded sinh and cosh to a wide audience. The issue also contain a paper by the famous Norwegian mathematician Niels Henrik Abel."Gudermann devoted much more attention to the theory of special functions. After the earlier works of Leonhard Euler, John Landen, and A. M. Legendre (Gauss's results were still in manuscript), Niels Abel's studies on elliptical functions, published mostly in A. L. Crelle's Journal für reine und angewandte Mathematik, represented an important divide in treating this area. In 1829 Carl Jacobi's book Fundamenta nova theoriae functionum ellipticarum was published. At the time Gudermann was one of the first mathematicians to expand on these results. Beginning with volume 6 (1830) of Crelle's Journal, he published a series of papers which he later summarized in two books: Theorie der Potenzialoder cyklisch-hyperbolischen Functionen (1833) and Theorie der Modular-Functionen und der Modular-Integrale (1844), which were to have had a sequel which was never written." (DSB). Gudermann is known today for being the teacher of Karl Weierstrass, who took Gudermann's course in elliptic functions in 1839, the first to be taught in any institute. Weierstrass was greatly influenced by this course, which marked the direction of his own research.

(Lancaster, Business Press), 1955. Royal8vo (285 x 210 mm). In the original yellow printed wrappers. Offprint from "Science, December 30, 1955, Vol. 122, No. 3185, pages 1255-1259). A very fine and clean copy. Seperately paginated. 5, pp. Rare offprint issue of Weaver's speech when he was elected president for The American Association for the Advancement of Science. Weaver is widely recognized as one of the pioneers of machine translation, and as an important figure in creating support for science in the United States. Along with communication, Weaver's greatest personal research interest lay with the mathematical theory of probability. It was his belief that all scientists are deeply concerned with probability. For a vast range of cases in which it is entirely impossible for science to answer the question 'Is this statement true?' Probability theory does furnish the basis for judgment as to how likely it is that the statement is true.

This paper, recording a series of further experiments with "The Crook Tube", the Radiometer and "the lines of pressure" under radiation, is an importent paper in the history of vacuum physics.Sir William Crookes (1832-1919) studied at the Royal College of Chemistry , London, and served there as an assistant to Hoffmann. In 1859 he founded the Chemical News and remained its proprietor and editor until his death. He early attracted attention by his discovery of the element thallium by spectroscopic methods. He was an active investigator in many fields of physics and contributed greatly to the advance of knowledge by his study of the radiometer and of the electric discharge in rarefied gases.
