THOMAS, L. H. (LLEWELLYN). - THE THOMAS FACTOR.
Herman H. J. Lynge & Søn A/S
lyn47242
London, Taylor and Francis, 1927. Contemp. full cloth. Stamped in blind on titlepage. In: "The London, Edinburgh, and Dublin Philosophical Magazine and Journal of Science", Vol. III, Seventh Series. X,1360 pp., textillustr. and 19 plates. (Entire volume offered). Thomas' paper: pp. 1-22. Internally clean and fine. First printing - in full - of Thomas' paper on electron spin. The Thomas factor gives a correction to the spin-orbit interaction in quantum mechanics, which takes into account the relativistic time dilation between the electron and the nucleus of an atom."In February 1926 the missing factor two was supplied (Nature vol. 117) by Llewellyn Thomas and has since been known as the Thomas factor. Thomas noted that earlier calculations of the precession of the electronic spin had been performed in the rest frame of the electron, without taking into account the precession of the electron orbit around its normal. Inclusion of this relativistic effect reduces the angular velocity of the electron (as seen by the nucleus) by the needed factor 1/2. Einstein was surprised. Pauli became converted." (Pais "Inward Bound", p. 279).

(Paris, G. Masson, 1878). No wrappers. In: "Annales de Chimie et de Physique", 5e Series - Tome 15, Cahier Septembre 1878. Pp. 5-144. (Entire issue offered). Cailletet's paper: pp. 132-144, textillustrations of apparatus used. First appearance of a milestonepaper in chemistry in which Cailletet describes his invention of the liquedifaction-process of oxygen and 5 other gases - and a classic in Low-Temperature Chemistry."Cailletet is most famous for his investigations on the compression and liquefaction of gases. At the time there were still six gases that were considered permanen: oxygen, nitrogen, hydrogen, nitrogen dioxyde, acrbon monooxide, and acetylene. Liquefaction had not been achieved despite the use of what were considered ernomous pressures. At the end of 1877 and the beginning of 1878 Callitet liquefied all these gases shortly before Raoul Pictet, who employed a completely different procedure. Cailletet had, following Andrews, recognized the importence of the critical temperature, above which liquefaction of a gas does not take place. In order to produce the necessary ccoling, he had recourse to expansion, sometimes employing several expansions in a staged process. It was in this manner that he succeeded in liquefying oxygen by beginning with liquid ethylene and passing through the stage of liquid methane."(DSB III, pp. 11-12). Parkinson "Breakthroughs" 1877 C.

"Bose, a merchant's son, was educated at the University of Leipzig, where he concentrated on philosophy, mathematics, and languages. In 1727 he received the M.A. and joined the philosophy faculty as a junior lecturer (Assessor) in mathematics and physics. In 1738 he accepted the chair of natural philosophy (Naturlehre) at the University of Wittenberg, where he remained until 1760, when the Prussians carried him off to Magdeburg as a hostage of war." (DSB)."The Wittenberg professor Georg Matthias Bose was a main actor in the transformation of electricity from an academic branch of natural investigation into a fashionable amusement. If, during the 1730s, both Stephen Gray at the Royal Society of London and Charles Du Chisternay Dufay at the Académie des Sciences in Paris devoted themselves to the investigation of the electric matter, it was Bose and other "Saxon virtuosi" that, as the Gentleman's Magazineacknowledged in 1745, made electricity a subject à-la-mode, with "princes willing to see this new fire that man produced from himself, and which did not descend from heaven." (Bertucci, Therapeutic Attractions: Early Applications of Electricity to the Art of Healing, P. 271).Many other papers by influential contemporary mathematicians, philosophers and historians are to be found in the present volume.
