lyn43983
London, Printed by Taylor and Francis - Published by the Author, (1862-) 73. Folio. Papersize 54,5x36,5 cm. Lithographed and fully handcoloured. Two birds, male and female on branches with fruits. J. Gould & H.C. Richter, del. et lith. - Walter & Cohn, Imp. Fine and clean. The plate is accompanied with the original textleaf. (2) pp. This is an original plate from Goulds great work "The Birds of Great Britain", issued between 1862 and 1873. The plates in this work were executed by Gould himself, and a few by J. Wolf, H.C. Richer and Hart. Together with Audubon's plates, the Gould-plates are considered the best bird-art ever produced, AND THE PLATES IN HIS "BIRDS OF GREAT BRITAIN" ARE THE PEAK OF GOULD'S ARTISTIC LIFE. In the foreword Gould stresses the difference from his "Birds of Europe" in the treatment of the illustrations, the inclusion here of the figures of the baby birds and nests, and he comments "Many of the public are quite unaware how the colouring of these large plates is accomplished; and not a few believe that they are produced by some mechanical process or by chromo-lithography. This, however is not the case; every sky with its varied tints and every feather of each bird were coloured by hand; and when it is considered that nearly two hundred and eighty thousand illustrations in the present work have been so treated, it will most likely cause some astonishment to those who give the subject a thought.". Elsewhere he remarked upon employing "almost all colourists in London." - Wood p. 364. - Nissen No. 372. - Sitwell 102. - Zimmer pp. 261-62. - Not in Jean Anker.

GAMOW, G. [GEORGE]. - GAMOW'S ATOMIC MODEL.

Berlin, Julius Springer, 1928. Without wrappers. In "Zeifschrift für Physik, 51 Band., Dritte und Viertes Heft. Titlepage to Bd. 51. Pp. 165-308.(Entire issue offered). Gamov's paper: pp. 204-12., textillustr. A stamp on titlepage. First printing of Gamow's first major contribution to physics, his theory of alpha-decay.By 1928, George Gamow had solved the theory of the alpha decay via tunneling. The alpha particle is trapped in a "potential well" by the nucleus. In classic physics, it is forbidden to escape, but according to the then newly discovered principles of quantum mechanics, it has a tiny (but non-zero) probability of "tunneling" through the barrier and appearing on the other side to escape the nucleus. Gamow solved a model potential for the nucleus and derived from first principles a relationship between the half-life of the decay, and the energy of the emission. Alpha particles were first described in the investigations of radioactivity by Ernest Rutherford in 1899."One of the first applications of quantum tunneling was by the physicist George Gamow in 1928, soon after the development of quantum mechanics. Alpha particles, which consist of two protons and two neutrons, are emitted by some nuclei. For example, ordinary uranium, 238U, with a lifetime of 4.5 billion years, decays by emitting an alpha particle. For decades alpha decay had presented a problem: the emitted alpha particles seemed to have too little energy to get out of the nucleus. The Coulomb barrier arises from the combined effect of the Coulomb repulsion between the alpha particle and the nucleus (both positively charged) and the nuclear force that attracts the two particles. The energy of the emitted alpha particle is less than the top of this barrier. Classically, the particle would be unable to get out of the nucleus, but it obviously does.Gamow suggested that alpha particles tunnel through the barrier. If so, the half-life of the decay should depend on the width and height of the barrier, and it does: the lower and thinner the barrier, the greater the chance of penetrating it. As the alpha particle's energy increases, the particle sees both a lower and thinner barrier so the probability of getting through increases extremely rapidly. For example, the energies of the alphas emitted by 232Th and 212Po are 4.05 MeV and 8.95 MeV, respectively, while their respective half-lives are 14 billion years and 0.3 millionth of a second. Thus, a factor of about two in energy produces a difference in half-lives of sixteen orders of magnitude (that is, sixteen powers of ten)!" (Rigden, Building Blocks of Matter: A Supplement to the Macmillan Encyclopedia of , p. 393).Parkinson "Breakthroughs", 1928 P.

First printing of a classic paper in thermodynamics. In this paper Reynolds describes his construction of laboratory apparatus for better measurement of Joule's mechanical equivalent of heat"Reynolds' most extensive experimental work concerned the mechanical equivalent of heat; specifically, he found the mean specific heat of water (in terms of work) between the freezing and boiling points. The results rank among the classic determinations of physical constants." (In the paper offered).(DSB XI, p. 393)

(London, W. Nicol, 1823). 4to. No wrappers as extracted from "Philosophical Transactions" 1823 - Part I. Pp. 160-165. Clean and fine. First appearance of this famous paper in which Faraday describes his procedure to obtain liquefaction of chlorine and some of its properties. Faraday made an analysis of chlorine hydrate..., finding the composition... He showed the results to Davy, who suggested that he should heat this compound in a sealed tube. The result was the liquefaction of chlorine, reported in a note at the end of the paper"(Partington IV:p. 105).Parkinson "Breakthroughs", 1823 C.The paper comes together with Humphry Davy "On a new phenomenon of electro-magnetism", pp. 153-159 and Charles Bell's importent works on the physiology of the eye "On the Motion of the Eye, in illustration of the uses of the muscles and nerves of the orbit", pp. 166-186 a. 1 engraved plate. + "Second Part of the Paper on the nerves of the Orbit", pp. 289-307.
