HILBERT, DAVID.

Julius Springer, Berlin 1924. 8vo. Bound with the original front wrapper in contemporary dark blue full cloth with gilt lettering to spine. In "Mathematische Annalen, 92 Band, 1924." Light writing in pencil to title page, other fine and clean throughout. [Hilbert:] 1-32 pp. [Entire volume: (2), 316 pp.]. First printing of Hilbert's important contribution to the unification of gravitational theory and electrodynamics. Hilbert stated that the present paper essentially was a reprint with insignificant alterations. This is, however, not entirely true as several Hilbert biographers have pointed out, that this version contain "major conceptual adjustments and a recognition of its deductive structure" (Renn, The Genesis of General Relativity, p.930). "...it was Hilbert's aim to give not just a theory of gravitation but an axiomatic theory of the world. This lends an exalted quality to his paper, from the title, 'Die Grundlagen der Physik', The Foundations of Physics, to the concluding paragraph, in which he expressed his conviction that his fundamental equations would eventually solve the riddles of atomic structure" (Pais: Subtle is the Lord, pp. 257-258). In Hilbert's 1915-paper he falsly believed that electromagnetism was essentially a gravitational phenomenon. "These and other errors are expurgated in an article Hilbert wrote in 1924 [the present paper]. It is again entitled 'Die Grundlagen der Physik' and contains a synopsis of his 1915 paper and a sequel to it written a year later. Hilbert's collected works, each volume of which contains a preface by Hilbert himself, does not include these two early papers, but only the one of 1924" (Pais, Subtle is the Lord…, p. 258)

(Paris, Bachelier), 1848 4to. No wrappers. In "Comptes rendus hebdomadaires des séances de l’Académie des sciences", Vol. 27, No 24. Pp. (593-) 616. (Entire issue offered). Bravais' paper: pp. 601-604. Frst appearance of a landmark paper in crystallography and mathematics as Bravais here begins his rechearches of the rotations and translations of crystals into themselves, and he thereby, in this process, advanced the studies of both crystalline structure and of group theory."Bravais Lattice is a type of spatial crystal lattice first described by the French scientist A. Bravais in 1848. Bravais expressed the hypothesis that spatial crystal lattices are constructed of regularly spaced node-points (where the atoms are located) that can be obtained by repeating a given point by means of parallel transpositions (translations). When straight lines and planes are constructed through these points, the spatial lattice becomes divided into equal parallelepipeds (cells). There are a total of 14 types of such lattices, by which the structure of any crystal can be described in the first approximation."(The Free Dictionary).Parkinson "Breakthroughs" 1848 C/M.

Tübingen, Max Niemeyer, 1953. 8vo. Orig. full brown cloth w. gilt lettering to spine and blindstamped publisher's mark on front board. Orig. dust-jacket, spine of d-j. darkened, tears to upper part. (4), 156, (1) pp. First edition of the highly important work that consists of Heidegger's lecture of 1935 as well as later contributions concerning the question of "Sein" ("Being"), which gave this term a more radical meaning than it had in "Sein und Zeit".This, Heidegger's "renewal" of Metaphysics, presents the philosophy of the 20th century with one of its greatest challenges. The centre of Heidegger's reflections in this work is the "Entmachtung des Geistes" ("The Disablement of Spirit"). Spirit is reduced to an instrumental reason, which Heidegger calls "Intelligens".

Fankfurt am Main, Klostermann, 1943. 8vo. Orig. printed wrappers. A bit of brownspotting. Some underlinings, mostly in pencil. 28 pp. The scarce first edition of Heidegger's important and early Freiberg-lecture from 1931, "The Essence of Truth" (not the one printed in Wegmarken). In this work Heidegger assumes the general determination of truth as the accordance of an utterance with a thing as his starting-point. Truth is thought as the accuracy of an accordance, but how, is the question posed by Heidegger, does this accordance between the utterance and the thing come about? And thus the question of the Essence of truth arises. One of the conclusions of the work is that "Das Wesen der Wahrheit ist die Freiheit."The "Essence of Truth" completes a line of thought begun with "Sein und Zeit". Truth is understood as the accuracy of an accordance and is traced back to the resoluteness (Entschlossenheit) of existence, which is now understood as freedom. "Der hier vorgetragene Versuch führt die Frage nach dem Wesen der Wahrheit über das Gehege der gewohnten Umgrenzung im üblichen Wesensbegriff hinaus und verhilft zum Nachdenken darüber, ob die Frage nach dem Wesen der Wahrheit nicht zugleich und zuerst die Frage nach der Wahrheit des Wesens sein muss. Im Begriff des "Wesens" aber denkt die Philosophie das Sein" (p. 27).

London, N.Y. etc., 1911. 8vo. Orig. full blue cloth w. gilt lettering to front board and spine. Corners a bit bumped and spine a bit crooked. Inner hinge weak and splitting, but a nice and clean copy. Library stamps. XII, 282 pp. + 34 plates, 3 of which are folded (4 in colour). Many figures and diagrams in the text. The important first edition of Darbishire's exposition of Mendelev's theory of heredety and the practise of breeding. The work constitutes the fullest popular account of Mendel's discovery until that time. "... I have given a fuller account of the phenomena observed by Mendelev than has yet appeared in popular form: the seven pairs of characters studied by him are all figured for the first time, and other results of his are illustrated by photographs from specimens which I have bred myself." (Preface p. (III) ).The work is of importance, as it spread the discovery of Mendel, the importance and meaning of which had only recently been discovered. Many Physiologists, genetics and biochemists got acquainted with the discveries of Mendel through this work. For instance John Burdon Sanderson Haldane (1892-1964), one of the founders of population genetics, primarily learned about the discovery of Mendel through Darbishire's work. "In 1901 his (Haldane's) interest in genetics was aroused by a lecture on the recently rediscovered work of Gregor Mendel; it was increased in 1910, when he began to study the laws of inheritance as revealed by his sister's 300 guinea pigs. Reading an early paper by A.D. Darbishire, Haldane noted what appeared to be the first example of gene linkage in vertebrets..." (D.S.B. p. 21).
