lyn49353
(Berlin & New York, Springer), 1970. Royal8vo. In the original blue wrappers. In "Astronomy and Astrophysics", Volume 5, No. 1, March 1970. Entire issue offered. A very fine and clean copy. Pp. 84-89. [Entire issue: (2), 170 pp]. First printing of Zeldovich's seminal paper in which he documented that gravitating bodies will collapse along each of their principal axes in succession, producing pancake-like and filament-like structures along the way, hence the "Zeldovich Pancake".It has long been known that galaxies tend to distribute themselves in filament and pancake-like structures, but it is hard to reproduce analytically because the mathematics of non-linear gravitational collapse are tricky. Although originally created for different purposes, Zeldovich's model now provides an excellent means of deriving the initial conditions to cosmological N-Body simulations.

FINDLAY, J.N.
Herman H. J. Lynge & Søn A/S
lyn36327
London, George Allen & Unwin Ltd., (1963). 8vo. Orig. full red cloth w. gilt lettering to spine. Minor bumping to capitals. Orig. blue dust-jacket in excellent coondition, not price-clipped. 259, (1) pp. W. the publishing slip statin: "With the Compliments of George Allen & Unwin, Publication date 21st March." The first edition of Findlay's important collection of essays on language, mind, value, God, mathematics etc, from the library of W.O.Van Quine, with his marginal annotation.John Niemeyer Findlay (1903-1987) was an important South African philosopher, who became professor of philosophy at several universities, including Yale, Boston and King's College in London. He plays a dominant role in the Anglo-American focus on continental philosophy and invokes a shift from the analytic tradition towards the continental classics of philosophy. At philosophical institutes that were traditionally governed by the analytic tradition in the 19th century with a focus on positivism, linguistics, philosophy of language and mind etc., Findlay stands out by reviving Hegelianism, championing phenomenology and putting focus on Idealism and classical authors. Initially inspired by Wittgenstein, he turns out a n outspoken critic of this main inspiration of analytic philosophy and comes to severely criticize him and his followers. "Philosophical themes as diverse as Language, Mathematics, Value, Mind and God are among the topics discussed in this book. Some of the papers which have appeared previously in the form of articles have had a considerable influence, particularly those on Time, on Cambridge Philosophy, on Goedelian Sentences, on Morality by Convention and on the Non-existence of God. In general they represent a gradual move from a position where the influence of Wittgenstein is paramount, to a position where there is considerable criticism of linguistic philosophy and a growing interest in the approaches of Hegel and the phenomenologists. The collection includes papers on Hegel and on G.E. Moore which have not been previously published." (Inner front flap). An excellent association-copy from the library of one of the most important American and analytical philosophers of the 20th century. It is quite interesting to notice that Quine, who has contributed immensely to the fields of analytic philosophy and philosophical logic, has kapt this book, which advocates a thoroughly different approach to philosophy and claims that the importance of philosophy lies in another field than his, in his library. On page 158 Quine has written: "He should see W. ..(?)".

lyn44093
Leipzig, Johann Ambrosius Barth, 1811. Without wrappers. In: "Annalen der Physik und der Physikalischen Chemie. Hrsg. Ludwig Wilhelm Gilbert", Bd.9 (= Bd. 39 der Reihe), Neuntes Stück. Pp. 1-128. (The entire issue offered). Davy's papers: pp. 3-42, pp. 43-89 and pp. 90-100. First appearance in German of these importent papers in the history of chemistry in which Davy announces his proofs of the elementary nature of clorine, describing the preparation, physical and chemical properties of a new gas, which he called 'euchlorine'. It is unstable and explodes on heating to give chlorine and oxygen. Davy here suggested the name 'chlorine', from a greek work for green, because of the greenish colour of the gas.Thorpe said of this first paper "As a piece of induction, the memoir is a model of its kind, and as an exercise in "the scientific use of ofthe imagination" it has few equals."Davy's researches on chlorine are of an importence with those on the alkali metals. Chlorine, first discovered by Scheele, was regarded by him as "dephlogisticated muriatic acid". As phlogistion was perfectly synonymous with hydrogen to Scheele, this view was essentially correct. Lavoisier, however, chiefly occupied with phenomena of combustion, assumed that chlorine was an oxide of an unknown "radical". avy performed many experiments endeavouring to confirm the presenceof oxygen and finally concluded that chlorine was an element."(Leicester & Klickstein "A Source Book in Chemistry", p. 243 ff).

Pp. 113-218 a. 1 engraved plate (map). The entire issue offered (Heft 2). Stromeyer's paper pp. 193-210. Clean and fine. First appearance of Strohmeyer's account of his discovery of Cadmium. The history of its discovery was very complicated as some other laid claim to its discovery.Stromeyer was inspector general of apothecaries in Hannover. "In 1817, fulfilling the duties of his office, he came across an apothecary's shop in which a bottle labeled zinc oxide contained zinc carbonate. Following this up, Stromeyer found himself interested in zinc carbonate, which turned yellow on strong heating as though it contained iron as an impurity, yet it contained no iron. He traced the yellow to an oxide not of zinc but of a hitherto unknown metal rather like it chemically. He named it cadmium for a zinc ore in which it is usually found accompanying the zinc."(Asimov).Weeks "Discovery of the Elements", pp. 135-39.
