Harlem, Les Heritieres Loosjes, 1886. With orig. printed frontwrapper to vol. XX. In "Archives Néerlandaises des Science Exactes et Naturelles.", Tome XX., 3. issue. Pp. 171-302 (=3. issue). Van't Hoff's paper: pp. 239-302. Clean and fine. First appearance of an importent paper in which Van't Hoff "showed from quantitative experiments on osmosis that dilute solutions of cane sugar obey the laws of Boyle, Gay-Lussac, and particularly leading to an extension of Avogadros law. He here announced the laws which bears his name and which apply to ideal solutions "solutions which are diluted to such an extent that they are comparable to ideal gases." Einstein in 1905 and later made importent applications of these laws."Thus van't Hoff was able to prove that the laws of thermodynamics are valid not only for gases but also for dilute solutuions. His pressure law gave general validity to the electrolytic theory of Arrhenius,,,consequently van't Hoff became an adherent of the theory of electrolytic dissociation."(DSB XIII, p. 579. In 1901 Van't Hoff was the first to receive the Nobel Prize for chemistry.

London, Printed by Taylor and Francis - Published by the Author, (1862-) 73. Folio. Papersize 54,5x36,5 cm. Lithographed and fully handcoloured. The bird on a branch, fruits and foliage.. J. Gould & H.C. Richter, del. et lith. - Walter, Imp. Fine and clean. The plate is accompanied with the original textleaf. (2) pp. This is an original plate from Goulds great work "The Birds of Great Britain", issued between 1862 and 1873. The plates in this work were executed by Gould himself, and a few by J. Wolf, H.C. Richer and Hart. Together with Audubon's plates, the Gould-plates are considered the best bird-art ever produced, AND THE PLATES IN HIS "BIRDS OF GREAT BRITAIN" ARE THE PEAK OF GOULD'S ARTISTIC LIFE. In the foreword Gould stresses the difference from his "Birds of Europe" in the treatment of the illustrations, the inclusion here of the figures of the baby birds and nests, and he comments "Many of the public are quite unaware how the colouring of these large plates is accomplished; and not a few believe that they are produced by some mechanical process or by chromo-lithography. This, however is not the case; every sky with its varied tints and every feather of each bird were coloured by hand; and when it is considered that nearly two hundred and eighty thousand illustrations in the present work have been so treated, it will most likely cause some astonishment to those who give the subject a thought.". Elsewhere he remarked upon employing "almost all colourists in London." - Wood p. 364. - Nissen No. 372. - Sitwell 102. - Zimmer pp. 261-62. - Not in Jean Anker.

Paris, Crochard, 1826. Contemp. hcloth. Gilt lettering on spine. In: "Annales de Chimie et de Physique, par Gay-Lussac et Arago", tome 32. 448 pp., 3 folded engraved plates. Balard's paper: pp. 337-84. Entire volume offered with original memoirs by Savart, Berzelius, Humboldt, Arago, Poisson, Liebig, Dumas et al. First printing of Balard's famous memoire in which he records his discovery of the new element Bromine (le brôme). While he was studying the flora of a salt marsh, he notized a deposit of sodium saulfate which had crystallized out in a pan containing mother liquer from common salts. "In an attempt to find a use for the waste liquers he performed a number of experiments, and notized that when certain reagents were added, the mother liquer bacame brown. His investigation of this phenomenon,...ked to the remarkable discovery....(Weeks p. 264). "The discovery of a new chemical element by a young and obscure provincial pharmacist caused a sensation in Paris. Balard's achievemnt was recognized by the Academie des Sciences and he was awarded a medal by the Royal Society of London."(DSB I, p. 416). "The discovery of bromine is a very importent acquisition to chemistry, and gives M. Balrad honorable rank inthe career of the sciences. We are of the opinion that this young chemist is every way worthy of the encouragement of the Academy, and we have the honour to propose that his memoir shall be printed in the "Recueil des Savants Étrangers" (The report from the French Academy, signed by Vaugelin, Thenard, and Gay-Lussac).

København & Kristiania, 1906, 1907 & 1917. Royal 8vo. Bound with the original wrappers in three similar but not entirely matching half calf bindings with gilt lettering to spine. Front wrapper of vol. 3 with author's presentation inscription: "Hr. Dr. Torsten Lagerberg / med Hilsen of Tak / fra Forfatteren / 5.10.17". Bindings with light wear, internally very nice and clean. VI, (2), 325 pp.; (8), 376 pp.; (10), 635 pp Rare complete first edition of Wwarming’s extensive work on phytoecology which still today is an important work on the subject in northwestern Europe. Volume three was given by Warming to Karl Erik Torsten Lagerberg (1882–1964), Swedish botanist and forestry professor. He taught at the Royal Forestry School (1918–1947) and studied forest tree diseases and fungi. He co-published Skogens skadesvampar and edited Svensk Botanisk Tidskrift from 1918. Lagerberg was elected to two national academies. Johannes Eugenius Warming (1841–1924), commonly known as Eugen Warming, was a pioneering Danish botanist widely recognized as one of the founding figures of modern ecology. He authored the first textbook on plant ecology in 1895, introduced the first university course in the subject, and helped define the scope and content of ecological science. In 1975, ecologist R. J. Goodland asserted: “If one individual can be singled out to be honoured as the founder of ecology, Warming should gain precedence” ("The Tropical Origin of Ecology: Eugen Warming's Jubilee"). Warming wrote a number of textbooks on botany, plant geography and ecology, which were translated to several languages and were immensely influential at their time and later. Most important were “Plantesamfund and Haandbog i den systematiske Botanik”.

First edition in the OFFPRINT-ISSUE. A main paper in aviation history. "The key figure in aviation during the last decade of the century, and one of the greatest men in the history of fling, was the german otto Lilienthal (1848-96). The past culminated in him, and the future was born in him. He was the first man in the world to launch himself into the air and fly. It was his gliding that led directly to the work of Chanute and the Wrights, whom he resembled in his appoach to aviation, in his talents, and in his igh qualities of integrity and humility. Lilienthal, says Dollfus simply, 'est le père de l'aviation moderne'." (Gibbs-Smith "Aviation. A historical survey...", pp. 89-90.).

EISENSTEIN, G.

Berlin, G. Reimer, 1850. 4to. Bound in later marbled wrappers, as extracted from "Journal für die reine und angewandte Mathematik, 28 Band, 4. Heft, 1844". Very fine and clean. Pp. 160-179; Pp. 224-274; Pp. 275-287 [Entire issue: 289-380 + 2 folded plates]. First publication of lemniscate function and Eisenstein's Criterion, one of the best known irreducibility criteria of polynomials. It is often seen referred to as the Schönemann-Eisenstein. Euler had introduced and studied the arc length of the lemniscate in the 18th century, this work laying the ground work for the later development of elliptic functions. The lemniscate function expresses the parameter of the lemnicate in terms of its arc-length. It can be extended to complex values of the parameter, and it then makes sense to ask for the points which divide the lemniscate into m equal parts, where m is a Gaussian integer (a complex number). Abel had shown that the determination of these points reduced to finding the roots of a certain polynomial equation. A crucial point in Eisenstein's extension of Abel's work described in the present papers was to prove that this polynomial is irreducible. Eisenstein developed his eponymous criterion to establish this (although today it is most familiar when applied to the more elementary case of a polynomial with ordinary integer coefficients).

The eldest son of Leonhard Euler was a prominent geometer in his own right. In 1758, Johann-Albert Euler (1734-1800) published a study of the motion of a sphere on an horizontal plane in the presence of Newtonian friction. His main result would be rediscovered independently by Gaspard Coriolis as part of his authoritative theoretical work on the topic: Théorie mathématique des effets du jeu de billard (1835). Johann Albrecht Euler, born in St. Petersburg 1732 was a Swiss-Russian astronomer and mathematician and he was the first child born to the great Swiss mathematician Leonhard Euler.
