(Leipzig, Barth),1912. 8vo. No wrappers. In: "Annalen der Physik IV, Bd. 38", No 7. Pp.249-472 a. 3 plates. (Entire issue offered). Einstein's papers: pp. 355-369 and pp. 443-458. Clean and fine. Both papers in first edition, and they are considered as the first appearance of a Nonlinear Field Equation for Gravitation. "Einstein published two remarkable memoirs in 1912 which were efforts to construct a complete theory of gravitation incorporating the equivalence principle. In these memoirs Einstein supposed that the gravitational field can be characterized completely by one function, the local speed of light, analogous to the Newtonian description, where only the gravitational potential appears. By an extraordinary argument he extended the potential equation of Newton...In his second Memoir in 1912, he used the equivalence principle to show the influence of a static gravitational field on electromagnetic and thermal processes." (DSB IV p.320 ff). - Weil No. 47 and 48.

The Shannon paper: pp. 611-656. First edition. "A study is made of coding and decoding systems for a continous channel with an additive gaussian noise and subject to an average power limitation at the transmitter. Upper and lower bounds are found for the error probability in decoding with optimal codes and decoding systems. These bounds are close together for signaling rates near channel capacity and also for signaling rates near zero, but diverge in between. Curves exhibiting these bounds are given." KIRCHHOFF, GUSTAVE ROBERT. - THE VELOCITY OF ELECTRICITY DETERMINED.

Leipzig, Johann Ambrosius Barth, 1857. Without wrappers. In "Annalen der Physik und Chemie. Hrsg. von J.C. Poggendorff", Bd. 100, No 2 . Pp. 177-252 a. 1 plate. (Entire issue offered). Kirchhoff's paper: pp. 193-217. With titlepage to volume 100. First printing of an importent papers on the theory of electricity in conductors, telegraph-cables etc., determining the velocity of the electrical propagation. He found that the propagation velocity of electricity to be "very close to the velocity of light in empty space"."The work of Thomson on signalling along cables was followed in 1857 (the paper offered) by a celebrated investigation by Kirchhoff's, on the propagation of electrical disturbance along a telegraph wire of circular cross-section. (Whittaker "A History of the Theories of Aether and Electricity", pp. 230 ff.)."The field was still open (the nature of the electric current) when Kirchhoff entered it in 1857 with his own general theory of the motion of electricity in conductors. His first paper, in which he treated linear conductors from the same premises as Weber, turned out to coincide in all essentials with an investigation carried out by Weber shortly before but delayed in publication. Both physicists noticed a remarkable implication of their theory: in a perfectly conducting circuit, oscillating currents could be propagated with a constant velocity, independent of the nature of the conductors, and numerically equal to the velocity of light. Both Kirchhoff and Weber, however, pointing to the extreme character of the condition of infinite conductivity, dismissed this result as a mere accidental coincidence."(DSB)

HILBERT, DAVID.
Herman H. J. Lynge & Søn A/S
lyn35061
Chicago, Open Court, 1902. Small 8vo. Orig. full red cloth, gilt. A rather faint dampstain along first hinge on frontcover, otherwise fine. VII,143 pp. First English edition of Hilbert's "Grundlagen der Geometrie" from 1899, one of the most influential publications in 2oth Century mathematics.Throughout the 19th century geometry was developed far beyond our intuitive conception of space; hyperbolic geometry was discovered by Gauss, Bolyai, and Lobachevsky and elliptic geometry by Riemann. However, Euclidean and non-Euclidean geometry still involved an intuitive idea about the concepts 'point', 'line', 'lies on', 'between', etc. In his 'Grundlagen' Hilbert set out to give a strictly formal formulation of geometry were points, lines, planes are nothing more than abstract symbols and concepts as 'lies on' are simply algebraic relations between these symbols. Through his method Hilbert could analyse independence and completeness of the axioms for geometry and he presented a new smaller set of axioms for Euclidean geometry. It can not be said that the 'Grundlagen' contains new and surprising discoveries, its importance lies in the great influence which Hilbert's method had on all fields of mathematics, and even other sciences as physics, chemistry, and biology. The 'Grundlagen' initiated a whole new paradigm shift and eventually evolved mathematics, throughout the 20th century, into a network of axiomatic formal systems.
