(Leipzig, Barth),1912. 8vo. No wrappers. In: "Annalen der Physik IV, Bd. 38", No 7. Pp.249-472 a. 3 plates. (Entire issue offered). Einstein's papers: pp. 355-369 and pp. 443-458. Clean and fine. Both papers in first edition, and they are considered as the first appearance of a Nonlinear Field Equation for Gravitation. "Einstein published two remarkable memoirs in 1912 which were efforts to construct a complete theory of gravitation incorporating the equivalence principle. In these memoirs Einstein supposed that the gravitational field can be characterized completely by one function, the local speed of light, analogous to the Newtonian description, where only the gravitational potential appears. By an extraordinary argument he extended the potential equation of Newton...In his second Memoir in 1912, he used the equivalence principle to show the influence of a static gravitational field on electromagnetic and thermal processes." (DSB IV p.320 ff). - Weil No. 47 and 48.

MONGE, (GASPARD). - THE GENERAL REPRESENTATION OF DEVELOPABLE SURFACES.
Herman H. J. Lynge & Søn A/S
lyn44972
(Paris, Moutard, Panckoucke, 1780). 4to. Extract from "Mémoires fe Mathematique et de Physique, Présentés à l'Academie des Sciences par divers Savans", Tome IX. Pp. 345-381 a. 2 folded engraved plates. And pp. 382-440 a. 3 folded engraved plates. Clean and fine. First printing of two importent papers by Monge in differential functions and infinitesimal geometry, - in the first he discussed the nature of the arbitrary functions involved in the integrals of, finite difference equations. He also considered the, equation of vibrating strings, a topic he later investigated more fully. In the second memoir Monge returned to infinitesimal geometry. Working on the theory of developable surfaces outlined by Euler in 1772, he applied it to the problem, of shadows and penumbrae and treated several, problems concerning ruled surfaces. "It is in this paper that he gives a general representation of developable surfaces..."(Morris Kline "Mathematical Thoughts from Ancient to Modern Times", p. 567).

BECQUEREL, EDMOND. - INVENTION OF THE PHOSPHOROSCOPE.
Herman H. J. Lynge & Søn A/S
lyn44136
(Paris, Victor Masson et Fils, 1859). Without wrappers. In: "Annales de Chimie et de Physique", 3e Series - Tome 55, Cahier Janvier 1861. Pp. 5-128 a. 2 large folded engraved plates (emission-lines and the phosporoscope). The entire issue offered. First appearance of Becquerel's first two pioneering studies on lluminiscent phenomena. "It was in these studies that Becquerel first described the phosphoroscope, an instrument of his own invention consisting of a box sealed with two disks mounted on the same axis and pierced with holes arranged in such a way that light could not at any one time pass through the entire apparatus. By rapidly revolving these perforated disks, an observer could continously view substances in the dark only fractions of a second after they had been exposed to brilliant light; and by regulating the speed of the revolution of the disks, one could measure the lenght of time that substances continued to glow after the exposure to light. Using this device, Becquerel was able to identify many new phosphorescent substances and to show that the phenomenon G.C. Stokes had named fluorescence in 1852 was in reality only phosphorescence of an extremely short duration....In this manner substances could be analyzed without physical or chemical alteration."(DSB I, p. 556).Becquerel dis his most importent work in optics on the phenomena of luminescence. In the middle years of the nineteenth century, he virtually monopollized the significant discoveries made inthis field.(DSB).

SCHMIDT, M.
Herman H. J. Lynge & Søn A/S
lyn47013
London, Macmillan & Co., 1963. Royal8vo. Bound in contemporary full cloth with black leather title-label with gilt lettering to spine. In "Nature", Vol. 197, 1963. Bookplates pasted on to front free end-papers, library stamp to title page. Otherwise a very fine and clean copy. P. 1040. [Entire volume: XLIX, II, (1), 1332 pp]. First publication of the very first observation of a quasar. "The nature of the quasars remained a mystery, but the discovery of this very bright example enabled Maarten Schmidt to obtain a high-quality optical spectrum of 3C 272 with the Palomar two-hundred-inch telescope, in California. Maarten Schmidt's elucidation of its nature opened completely new perspectives for astronomy and high-energy astrophysics" (A Century of Nature). A quasar (quasi-stellar radio source) is a very energetic and distant active galactic nucleus. Quasars are extremely luminous and were first identified as being high redshift sources of electromagnetic energy, including radio waves and visible light, that were point-like, similar to stars, rather than extended sources similar to galaxies. This volume of Nature also contains three other seminal papers on 3C 273: J. B. Okie's "Absolute Energy Distribution in the Optical Spectrum of 3C 273;" Jesse L. Greenstein and Thomas A Matthew's "Red Shift of the Unusual Radio Source 3C 48;" and C. Hazard, M. B. Mackey, and A. J. Shimmin's "Investigation of the Radio Source 2C 273 by the Method of Lunar Occulations."
