Berlin, Julius Springer, 1926. Without wrappers as extracted from "Zeitschrift für Physik. Hrsg. von Karl Scheel", Bd. 39, pp. 499-518. With the titlepage to the whole volume. First edition of this importent paper in which Heisenberg - after inventing Quantum Mechanics the year before (1925) - investigates some of the fundamental aspects of the new theory. Heisenberg recognizes the invariance of the wave equation with respect to various transformations. "It is clear that such invariance exists with respect to an interchange of the coordinates of identical particles, e.g. of two electrons in an atom of two nuclei of the same kind in a molecule. As a consequence, the wave function of a non-degenerate stationary state must either remain unchanged or may only change sign when the transformation is applied to it....Indeed, in this way Pauli's exclusion principle for electrons found a formulation in terms of wave mechanics."(K. Kronik in Memorial Volume to Wolfgang Pauli).

First edition in the OFFPRINT-ISSUE. A main paper in aviation history. "The key figure in aviation during the last decade of the century, and one of the greatest men in the history of fling, was the german otto Lilienthal (1848-96). The past culminated in him, and the future was born in him. He was the first man in the world to launch himself into the air and fly. It was his gliding that led directly to the work of Chanute and the Wrights, whom he resembled in his appoach to aviation, in his talents, and in his igh qualities of integrity and humility. Lilienthal, says Dollfus simply, 'est le père de l'aviation moderne'." (Gibbs-Smith "Aviation. A historical survey...", pp. 89-90.).

lyn62384
København & Kristiania, 1906, 1907 & 1917. Royal 8vo. Bound with the original wrappers in three similar but not entirely matching half calf bindings with gilt lettering to spine. Front wrapper of vol. 3 with author's presentation inscription: "Hr. Dr. Torsten Lagerberg / med Hilsen of Tak / fra Forfatteren / 5.10.17". Bindings with light wear, internally very nice and clean. VI, (2), 325 pp.; (8), 376 pp.; (10), 635 pp Rare complete first edition of Wwarming’s extensive work on phytoecology which still today is an important work on the subject in northwestern Europe. Volume three was given by Warming to Karl Erik Torsten Lagerberg (1882–1964), Swedish botanist and forestry professor. He taught at the Royal Forestry School (1918–1947) and studied forest tree diseases and fungi. He co-published Skogens skadesvampar and edited Svensk Botanisk Tidskrift from 1918. Lagerberg was elected to two national academies. Johannes Eugenius Warming (1841–1924), commonly known as Eugen Warming, was a pioneering Danish botanist widely recognized as one of the founding figures of modern ecology. He authored the first textbook on plant ecology in 1895, introduced the first university course in the subject, and helped define the scope and content of ecological science. In 1975, ecologist R. J. Goodland asserted: “If one individual can be singled out to be honoured as the founder of ecology, Warming should gain precedence” ("The Tropical Origin of Ecology: Eugen Warming's Jubilee"). Warming wrote a number of textbooks on botany, plant geography and ecology, which were translated to several languages and were immensely influential at their time and later. Most important were “Plantesamfund and Haandbog i den systematiske Botanik”.

EISENSTEIN, G.

Berlin, G. Reimer, 1850. 4to. Bound in later marbled wrappers, as extracted from "Journal für die reine und angewandte Mathematik, 28 Band, 4. Heft, 1844". Very fine and clean. Pp. 160-179; Pp. 224-274; Pp. 275-287 [Entire issue: 289-380 + 2 folded plates]. First publication of lemniscate function and Eisenstein's Criterion, one of the best known irreducibility criteria of polynomials. It is often seen referred to as the Schönemann-Eisenstein. Euler had introduced and studied the arc length of the lemniscate in the 18th century, this work laying the ground work for the later development of elliptic functions. The lemniscate function expresses the parameter of the lemnicate in terms of its arc-length. It can be extended to complex values of the parameter, and it then makes sense to ask for the points which divide the lemniscate into m equal parts, where m is a Gaussian integer (a complex number). Abel had shown that the determination of these points reduced to finding the roots of a certain polynomial equation. A crucial point in Eisenstein's extension of Abel's work described in the present papers was to prove that this polynomial is irreducible. Eisenstein developed his eponymous criterion to establish this (although today it is most familiar when applied to the more elementary case of a polynomial with ordinary integer coefficients).

But aspirin can truly claim the title of wonder drug.Raffaele Piria (20 August 1814 - 18 July 1865), an Italian chemist from Scilla who converted the substance Salicin into a sugar and a second component, which on oxidation becomes salicylic acid, a major component of an analgesic drug, Aspirin (acetylsalicylic acid).Garrison & Morton No 1857.

Kirchhoff's paper: pp. 193-217. With titlepage to volume 100. First printing of an importent papers on the theory of electricity in conductors, telegraph-cables etc., determining the velocity of the electrical propagation. He found that the propagation velocity of electricity to be "very close to the velocity of light in empty space"."The work of Thomson on signalling along cables was followed in 1857 (the paper offered) by a celebrated investigation by Kirchhoff's, on the propagation of electrical disturbance along a telegraph wire of circular cross-section. (Whittaker "A History of the Theories of Aether and Electricity", pp. 230 ff.)."The field was still open (the nature of the electric current) when Kirchhoff entered it in 1857 with his own general theory of the motion of electricity in conductors. His first paper, in which he treated linear conductors from the same premises as Weber, turned out to coincide in all essentials with an investigation carried out by Weber shortly before but delayed in publication. Both physicists noticed a remarkable implication of their theory: in a perfectly conducting circuit, oscillating currents could be propagated with a constant velocity, independent of the nature of the conductors, and numerically equal to the velocity of light. Both Kirchhoff and Weber, however, pointing to the extreme character of the condition of infinite conductivity, dismissed this result as a mere accidental coincidence."(DSB)
