Annotations to front free end-paper. Without wrappers as issued in "Videnskabernes Selskabs Skrifter", nice and clean copy. Pp. 189-216. First edition of Kraft’s paper on contradictions in traditional theories of matter and composite substances. Kraft argues that the traditional physics and metaphysics is filled with contradictions, particularly regarding the divisibility of matter, the nature of space and time and the structure of reality. He suggests that Leibniz’s theory of monads or a similar concept of fundamental indivisible units provides a more consistent framework for understanding the physical world. The present paper is a fine example of 18th-century Enlightenment debates on the nature of matter, space and time,

(Berlin, Stockholm, 1924-25). 4to. Bound in one full fabrikoid. As issued in "Acta Mathematica", vols 45,46,47. - Pp. 29-127, pp. 102-214 - pp. 238-281. Clean and fine. A very small tear to the last two leaves repaired without loss. First edition of Harald Bohr's main work. Harald Bohr was younger brother to Niels Bohr. "The problem of which function may be represented by Dirichlet series led Bohr to his main achievement, the theory of almost periodic functions, on which the greater part of his later work is concentrated....Whereas hitherto in the theory of Dirichlet series one always worked withh frequencies forming a monotonic sequence, Bohr discovered that in order to obtain an answer to the problem one would have to consider series with quite arbitrary frequencies. The answer was obtained by introducing the notion of almost periocicity. The theory was published in three papers (the offered papers) in "Acta Mathematica", and numerous mathematicians joined in the work on its simplification and extension. Thus Weil and Wiener connected it with the classical theories of integral equations and Fourier integrals, and Bochner developed a summation method for Bohr-Fourier series gneralizing Fejér's theorem." (Børge Jessen in DSB).

LAURENT, AUGUSTE. - INTRODUCING THE "NUCLEUS THEORY" IN CHEMISTRY.

lyn45079
Paris, Crochard, 1836. Contemp. hcloth. In: "Annales de Chimie et de Physique, Par MM. Gay-Lussac et Arago.", 2e Series, Tome 66. 448 pp. a. 1 folded engraved plate. (Entire volume offered). Laurent's papers: pp. 136-213 a. pp. 314-335. Some scattered brownspots. First printing of Laurent's long paper in which he tried to develope the rules of substitution into a chemical system oforganic compounds, the "Nucleus theory". Laurent is considered one of the most importent chemists in the 18th centuryHis first theoretical efforts were largely taxonomic in character. He then began to develop a pictorial model based on atomistic representations as considered by earlier French crystallographers. Laurent’s "nucleus theory" or "theory of derived radicals"located every substance at the intersection of two kinds of transformations: substitutions, which operate on the matter inside the fundamental radical and do not affect its general chemical behavior, and external modifications, which influence various chemical functions. (DSB)."In his studies of the derivatives of naphtalene, Laurent was impressed by the fact the the fundamental properties of these compounds remained, in spite of the various substitutions which took place in them. A certain nucleus seemed to impose its properties on all its derivatives. This nucleus theory was the basis for the unitary which was specifically formulated by Gerhardt."(Leicester & Klickstein "A Source Book in Chemistry", p. 345).The volume contains other notable papers by Regnault, D'Arcet, Chevreuil, Rose, Gay-Lussac and Carlo Matteucci's importent memoir "Sur la Propagation du Courant Electriques dans les Liquides", pp. 225-313.
