lyn42215
(London, Richard and John E. Taylor, 1845). 4to. No wrappers as extracted from "Philosophical Transactions" 1845 - Part II. Pp 283-296, pp. 297-301, pp.303-317 and 2 engraved plates. The plates somewhat soiled. Textpages fine and clean. First appearance of these three importent papers on animal electricity, being some of the foundational papers in electrophysiology. "In 1842 he made his most famous discovery, the induced twitch, and began publishing his works in English, with a series of memoirs send to the Royal Society."(DSB).In these papers Matteucci describes several arrangements by which he was enabled to make new experiments in confirmation of the laws of muscular currents, of which he has given an account in his recent work "Traité des Phénomenes Electro-Physiologiques des Animaux." He finmds that, in these experiments, the employment of a galvanometer is unnecessary, as the sensibility of the electroscopic frog of Galvani gives sufficient indications of the electrical current without the use of that instrument. From these experiments he derives someimportent generalisations about musculat currents.

HOFMANN, A.W. (AUGUST WILHELM von). - THE TRUE NATURE OF AMINES DEMONSTRATED.
Herman H. J. Lynge & Søn A/S
lyn44307
(London, Richard Taylor, 1851). 4to. No wrappers as extracted from "Philosophical Transactions" 1851 - Part I. Pp. 357-398. First appearance of a landmark paper in organic chemistry in which Hofmann demonstrates the true nature of amines."Wurtz had shown the existence of methyl and ethyl amines and had suggested that that they may be regarded as derivatives of ammonia. Hofmannproved this in adetailled study, in which he showed that all hydrogens of ammonia, and even of the ammonia radical, could be replaced by organic groups to give primary, secondary, and tertiary amines, and quaternary ammonium compounds. In the course of this work, he also cleared up the relation between ammonia and the ammonium radical which had long troubles chemists. The investigation was carried out in 1850, at a time when the type theory was foremost in theminds of organic chemists. It was therefore natural that Hofmann should formulate his nes compounds as representative of the "ammonia type". The formulas which he wrote, however scarcely differ from those used today. These clear examples helped Frankland in developing his theory of variable valence."(Klickstein p. 364). Klickstein's selection is taken form the offered item pp. 392-397.

DUTROCHET, RENÉ JOACHIM HENRI. - OSMOSIS DISCOVERED.
Herman H. J. Lynge & Søn A/S
lyn43596
Paris, Crochard, 1827. Without wrappers. In: Annales de Chimie et de Physique, Par MM. Gay-Lussac et Arago.", Tome 35 (last issue). Halftitle to vol. 35. Pp. 337-400. Dutrochet's paper: pp. 393-400. Some browning to halftitle. Some scattred brownspots. First appearance of Dutrochet's famous paper in which he coined the terms 'endosmosis' and 'exosmosis', describing the process by which water passes through a membrane from a solution on the one side to another solution on the other side. This pressure, due to the passage of water has been called "osmotic". His conclusion, that the pressure is proportional to the concentration of the solution was confirmed by Karl Vierordt in 1848."In 1827, the French physiologist R.J.H. Dutrochet carried out experiments to demonstrate and measure the diffusion of a liquid through a membrane, or 'Osmosis' as it is now called. Dutrochet showed that when a glass tube, filled with salt solution and closed by a piece of pig's bladder, is immersed vertically in water, water passes through the membrane into the tube until the level of liquid in the tube is considerably higher than teh level of the water outside."(Taton "Science in the 19th century", p.256)Garrison & Morton No 670. - Gedeon: 63.2 (ref. to a paper from 1828).

(6),95, (8),104, (2),70 pp. All three works are among the earliest textbooks on chemistry in Danish. These presentations by Denmark’s three leading chemists were based on lectures organized by the newly founded Society for the Dissemination of Natural Science (Selskabet for Naturenlærens Udbredelse), established in 1824 after the English model, with these three individuals as its central figures. Ørsted’s book is his last on chemical subjects, and this second edition is heavily revised and was sold only to members of the society (at most 200); it was not available in bookstores.

lyn48369
[Paris, Presses Universitaires de France, 1966]. 4to. In the original stapled blank blue printed wrappers. Offprint from "Institut des Hautes Études Scientifiques. Publications Mathématiques" No. 29. Light wear to extrimities, otherwise fine and clean. Pp. 95-103, (1). Scarce offprint issue of Grothendieck's seminal paper in which he founded crystalline cohomology. He introduced crystalline cohomology to study the p-torsion part of the cohomology of characteristic p varieties. In the crystalline topology which is the basis of this theory, covering maps are given by infinitesimal thickenings together with divided power structures. The crystalline covers of a fixed scheme form a category with no final object.

STODART, J. (JAMES) and FARADAY, M. (MICHAEL). - A PIONEER WORK IN CHEMICAL TECHNOLOGY.
Herman H. J. Lynge & Søn A/S
lyn43118
(London, W. Nicol, 1922). 4to. No wrappers as extracted from "Philosophical Transactions" 1822 - Part II. Pp. 273-270. Clean and fine. First appearance of a founding paper in the science of alloys."Beyond his work in analytical and pure chemistry, Faraday showed himself to be a pioneer in the application of chemistry to problems of technology. In 1818, together with James Stodart, a cutler, he began a series of experiments on the alloys of steel. Although he was able to produce alloys of superior quality, they were not capable of commercial production because they required the use of such rare metals as platinum, rhodium, and silver. Nevertheless, Faraday demonstrated that the increasingly urgent problem of producing higher-grade steel could be attacked by science. The later work on steel of Henry Sorby, Henry Bessemer, and Robert A. Hadfield was based directly on Faraday's work in the early part of the century."(DSB IV, p. 531-532).

CHRISTIE, S. HUNTER. - THE INVENTION OF "THE WHEATSTONE BRIDGE"
Herman H. J. Lynge & Søn A/S
lyn46365
(London, Richard Taylor, 1833). 4to. No wrappers as extracted from "Philosophical Transactions" 1833 - Part I. Pp. 95-142 a. 2 engraved plates (showing the apparatus, the Wheatstone Bridge). First appearance of the paper in which Christie describes his invention of the electrical circuit meant to measure an unknown electrical resistance by balancing two legs of a bridge circuit, one leg of which includes the unknown component. It was later (1843) improved and popularized by Charles Wheatstone, and then baptized "Wheatsone's Bridge". Wheatstone called the circuit a "Differential Resistance Measurer." "Christie’s paper "Experimental Determination of the Laws of Magneto-electric Induction" was the Bakerian lecture for 1833. In it Christie showed that "the conducting power, varies as the squares of [the wires’] diameters directly, and as their lengths inversely." He also concluded that voltaelectricity, thermoelectricity, and magnetoelectricity are all conducted according to the same law, which lent further support to the theory that all these electricities are identical. In this paper (the paper offered) Christie also gave the first description of the instrument that came to be known as the Wheatstone bridge."(DSB).

Paris, J. Klostermann, 1810. Contemp. hcalf. Spine gilt. Slightly rubbed. A few scratches to binding. Small stamps on verso of titlepage. In: "Annales de Chimie, ou Recueil de Mémoires concernant la Chemie" Tome 75. 336 pp. a. 2 folded engraved plates. Some scattered brownspots. The papers: pp. 27-77, 129-175, 256-263, 264-273, 274-289 a. 290-316. First French version of Davy's "The Bakerian Lecture for 1809. On some new Electrochemical Researches, on various Objects, particularly the metallic Bodies, from the Alkalies, and Earth, and on some Combinations of Hydrogene. Read November 16, 1809.", together with the controversy papers by Davy and Gay-Lussac & Thenard."Mr. Davy having from the commencement of his electro-chemical researches, communicated the several steps of his progress to the Society (The Royal Society), takes the present opportunity of reporting the results of his further inquiries under four principal heads. First, on the nature of the metals of the fixed alkalis. Second, on the nature of Hydrogen and composition of ammonia. Thirdly, on the metals of the earth; and Fourthly he makes a comparison between the antiphlogistic doctrine, and a modified phlogistic hypothesis."(Abstract). He further gives arguments for considering potassium and sodium, which he discovered in 1808, as a element.""Gay-Lussac had a slight rivalry between himself and the creation scientist Sir Humphry Davy. Davy was chemically preparing Potassium and Sodium through an electrical current, and this made Gay-Lussac and Thénard envious of his success. They too decided to perform the same task, but they had no battery at their disposal as Davy had, so they had to form another way to chemically prepare the two elements. In 1808, they used a red-hot iron fused to potash, the water-soluble form of a manufactured salt containing potassium, to perform this task, a method that Davy admitted had its advantageous qualities. Gay-Lussac and Thénard were successful in preparing Potassium, and continued to make a full analysis of its chemical properties, and began to use it for their own experiments. In 1809, Davy performed the same task, using it to reduce Boron in Boracic acid."
