First French edition of this importent paper in the history of chemistry in which Berzelius advanced the concept of 'Catalysis', and described inorganic reactions by way of metals and the biological reactions by enzymes. The paper on Catalysis was first published in his "Årsberättelse" (Annual Survey) in 1835. - Axel Holmberg 1836:14. - Partington IV, pp. 263-64"This is a new force in inorganic and organic nature, bringing into being chemical activity, and more widely distributed than has hitherto been thought, the naure of which is completely concealed. If I all it a new force it is not my meaning that it is independent of the electrochemical relations of matter, but on the contrary I can only assume that it is a special kind of manifestation of these. So long as its nature and relations are unknown it will be convenient to considerit a new force, and to give it a name."(Berzelius).Parkinson "Breakthroughs", 1836 C.The issue contains furthermore two importent papers by the founder of modern organic cemeistry, Auguste Laurent "Sur l'Acide Naphtalique et ses Combinaisons", pp. 113-125 and "Théorie des Combinaisons Organiques", pp. 125-151. Pp. (2), 145-163; Pp. 737-43. First printing of Neyman and Scott's two influential papers in which they present their theory of the spatial distribution of galaxies which is based on four main assumptions: 1, Galaxies occur only in clusters. 2, The numbers of galaxies varies from cluster to cluster to cluster. 3, The distribution of galaxies within a cluster is also subject to a probabilistic law. 4, The distribution of cluster centers in space is subject to a probabilistic law described as quase-uniform."Neyman’s major research efforts at Berkeley were devoted to several large-scale applied projects. These included questions regarding competition of species (with T. Park), accident proneness (with G. Bates), the distribution of galaxies and the expansion of the universe (with C.D. Shane and particularly Elizabeth Scott, who became a steady collaborator and close companion), the effectiveness of cloud seeding, and a model for carcinogenesis. Of these, perhaps the most important was the work in astronomy, where the introduction of the Neyman-Scott clustering model brought new methods into the field." (DSB).

JOULE, J.P. (JAMES PRESCOTT) - ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTENT IMPROVEMENTS OF THE STEAM-ENGINE.
Herman H. J. Lynge & Søn A/S
lyn47108
(London, Taylor and Francis, 1862). 4to. No wrappers as extracted from "Philosophical Transactions" 1862 - Vol. 151. Pp. 133-160, 1 large textillustration. First appearance of Joule's paper in which he describes his importent improvement of the Steam-Engine, using the principles of the first law of thermodynamics which he himself helped to establish."In addition, numerous other researches stand to Joules credit -- the work done in compressing gases and the thermal changes they undergo when forced under pressure through small apertures (with Lord Kelvin), the change of volume on solution, the change of temperature produced by the longitudinal extension and compression of solids, etc. It was during the experiments involved by the first of these inquiries that Joule was incidentally led to appreciate the value of surface condensation in increasing the efficiency of the steam engine. A new form of condenser was tested on the small engine employed, and the results it yielded formed the starting-point of a series of investigations which were aided by a special grant from the Royal Society, and were described in an elaborate memoir presented to it on the 13th of December 1860 (the paper offered). His results, according to Kelvin, led directly and speedily to the present practical method of surface-condensation, one of the most important improvements of the steam engine, especially for marine use, since the days of James Watt. Joule died at Sale on the 11th of October 1889."(NNDB)

(Paris, Bachelier), 1849. 4to. No wrappers. In: "Comptes Rendus Hebdomadaires des Séances de L'Academie des Sciences", Tome 28, No 7. Pp. 189-240 (entire issue offered). Wurtz's paper: pp. 223-226. First appearance of the announcement of Wurtz's outstanding discovery of Liebig’s prediction, that there might be organic compounds analogous to ammonia and derivable from it by the replacement of hydrogen - the amines. The entire memoir was not published in full until 1855 in 'Annales de Chimie et de Physique'.Wurtz is most noted for his investigation of glycols and for his discovery of the amines. The latter discovery in 1849 (the paper offered) was very significant at the time, for ot suggested the possibility of a new type, the ammonia type, which helped to explain the behaviour of nitrogenous compounds. (Leicester & Klickstein "A Source Book..", pp. 362-63). - Parkinson "Breakthroughs" 1849 C.

Stamp to title-page, otherwise internally fine. 20 pp. + 2 folded tables. The rare first edition of Bille's work on how to keep a logbook. Michael Johannes Petronius Bille was a Danish-Norwegian, and Prussian naval officer born 8 November 1769 in Stege on the Danish Island of Møn into a naval family which had produced and would produce Danish admirals.Over fifteen years he also served as a teacher of mathematics and astronomy at the Seekadettenakademiet (Dansk Søværnets Officersskole). From 1807-1811, he served as a captain stationed in Kristiansand in charge of the gunboat squadron (Roflotillen). In 1812-1813 he commanded a French warship in the Scheldt. From 1815 he served as pilot inspector in Helsingør until he entered Prussian service in 1820.In 1821 he began a very fruitful career as director of the Prussian Navigationsschule in Danzig. After three years he moved the school into a building that lay outside Danzig at the mouth of the Radaune River because the St. Jacob Church was inadequate. The school was then assigned to the war schooner Stralsund commanded by Longé. From 1825 the school also had the gunboat Danzig. Bille and the vessels were under the authority of the Ministry of War in Berlin. This may be seen as the beginning of the Prussian Navy.
