First appearance of this fundamental paper in the history of organic chemistry in which Wollaston announced his discovery of "Cystine", the very first of the amino acids, the building blocks of protein, to be discovered.Wollaston "in 1812 (correct 1810) identified a new and rare type of stone, which he called "cystic oxide" since it occurred in the bladder. This was later renamed cystine, the first of the amino acids to be discovered. Fourcroy and Vauquelin reported similar investigations, but unaccountably gave no recognition to Wollaston. This led Alexander Marcet, a physician, to set matters right in a popular work dedicated to Wollaston."(DSB XIV, p. 492).Garrison & Morton: 668.1.

A wave function is formulated that involves the introduction of a pair of electrons (the hydrogen molecule) in an electron orbital that extends about two ore more atomic nuclei. Together with a paper by Heitler and London from the same year, this paper marks the beginning of a new era in chemistry as it explains the chemical bond in terms of the new physics.Henry M. Leicester "Source Book in Chemistry 1900-1950", pp. 151-156.The volume contains also Condon's paper. "Coupling of electronic and nuclear Motions in Diatomic Molecules", pp. 462-466.

Berlin, G. Reimer, 1830. 4to. Without wrappers as extracted from "Journal für die reine und angewandte Mathematik. Hrsg. von C.L. Crelle", Bd. 5 u. 6. With titlepage to Bd. 5. Pp. 1-36 and pp. 107-146. One engraved plate. First printing of Plückers invention of separate homogenous coordinates. Plücker introduced trilinear coordinates, and he "starts with a fixed triangle and takes the coordinates of any point P to be the signed perpendicular distances from P to the sides of the triangle; each distance can be multiplied by the same arbitrary constant...by using homogenous coordinates and Euler's theorem on homogenous functions.....Plücker was able to give elegant algebraic representations of geometric ideas...and his efforts to treat duality algebraically led him to a beautiful idea, line coordinates....With this notion of line coordinates Plücker was able to give an algebraic formulation and proof of the principle of duality. (New York), American Telephone and Telegraph Company, 1964. 8vo. Volume XLIII, September, No. 4, Part 1 and 2, 1964 of "The Bell System Technical Journal". In the original printed blue wrappers. Previous owner's stamp to front wrapper, and very light brownspotting to spine, otherwise a near mint copy. Pp. 1155-1479 + two folded plates, one loosely inserted. First publication of AT&T's first submarine telephone cable across the pacific. It went from Japan to Hawaii, where it connected to two cables linking Hawaii with the mainland. This brought the same improvements to trans-Pacific service that the TAT-1 had brought to trans-Atlantic service in 1956. (See link below). Since the trans-Atlantic service opened in 1927, calls had traveled across the ocean via radio waves. But cables provide much higher signal quality, avoid atmospheric interference and offer greater capacity and security.Due to uncertainties in global politics, the economic involvement by the US government in the project was minimal. Papers contained in the present issue:1. Ehrbar, R.D.; Fraser, J.M.; Kelley, R.A.; Morris, L.H.; Mottram, E.T.; Rounds, P.W. The SD Submarine Cable System. Pp. 1155-1184.2. Paris, Gauthier-Villars, 1888-1890 4to. Bound with the front wrappers in contemporary half cloth. In "Journal de Mathématiques pures et appliquées". With two paper labels to spine and with the author's name to top of each wrapper. A stamp to front free end paper and first wrapper. Otherwise fine. First appearance of this collection of important papers which, amongst others, contains the questions to whether the involutes are algebraic."Besides his two pedagogical works, it was through numerous memoirs (approximately 150, which have been collected) that Humbert held a major place in the mathematical discovery and production of his time. His writings were inspired by his interest in the study of algebraic curves and surfaces and were marked by the lucidity with which he related the problems biography in encountered in this area to questions of analysis and number theory. He thus enriched analysis and gave the complete solution of the two great questions of the transformation of hyperelliptic functions and of their complex multiplication. He also pointed out the resulting consequence: the existence of a group of transformations of certain surfaces into themselves constitutes an essential difference between the geometry of surfaces and that of curves. But, most important, he completed the work of Hermite by pursuing the applications to number theory throughout his life."The present volume also contain contribution by Caspary and Hilbert.

Pp. 127-161 and 10 lithographed plates, showing the telescope and its parts. A few small weak brownspots to top of some plates. First printing of the detailled description of the Great Melbourne Telescope, by Robinson, member of the commitee and Thomas Grubb, the constructor. With it a number of importent observations of Nebulae were carried out. For 20 years it was the largest in the world, and it was the first instrument to document gravitational lens light refraction. The telescope was destroyed during the bush fires of January 2003."The construction of the grand instrument was entrusted to Mr. Grubb, F.R.S., of Dublin, Ireland. At the Commencement of the year 1868 the telescope was completed, and examined by the Commitee of the Royal Society, made up of Lord Rosse, Dr. Robinson and Warren de la Rue. Intheir report they expressed their opinion that the equatorial was a masterpiece of astronomical mechanism."
