VIII, 348 pp. The uncommon first edition of Michelet's first notable work, "A System of Philosophical Morals". The noticeable German philosopher Karl Ludwig Michelet (1801 - 1893) was left-Hegelian philosopher who defended a political and religious liberalism that tended towards radicalism. He was an important student of Hegel and he was the co-editor of his works. He studied philosophy at the University of Berlin and became doctor here in 1824; in 1829, the year after he published the present work, he became professor of philosophy at the university and remained so until his death. He spent his entire career defending and continuing the doctrines of Hegel. In his "System der philosophischen Moral", he deals with the principles of human actions and examines the ethical theory of the responsibility of these.

First appearance of the paper in which the authors records a series of experiments on the combustion of hydrogen, the aim of which was to confirm Lavoisier's large scale experiments on the synthesis of water. They finally proved that water only contains hydrogen and oxygen, and found the approximate ratio of their weights."In May 1790 Séguin read to the Académie des Sciences the report on the larg-scale synthesis of water carried out in Fourcroy’s laboratory by himself, Fourcroy, and Vauquelin. The purpose of this experiment was to establish finally that water is composed only of hydrogen and oxygen and that the weight of water is fully accounted for by the weights of the two gases. They also sought to determine accurately the combining ratio of the components of water, an especially important constant in oxygen chemistry. They found that the ratio hydrogen: oxygen is 2.052:1 by volume and 14.338:85.662 by weight. (The discrepancies from the true figure probably arose from the difficulties of weighing the gases.)"(DSB).Apart from other importent chemical papers by Fourcroy, Seguin, Klaproth etc., the volume contains Joseph Black's famous letter to Lavoisier, where Black gives up his phlogistic theory and accepts the new chemistry, lead by Lavoisier. "Mill was somewhat cagey on this subject, both in public discourse - he refused to answer questions about his religious beliefs while running for Parliament - and in his writings. In correspondence Mill said that he had never had a belief in God. He did write that there is enough evidence for a divine designer/creator in nature to 'afford a large balance of probability in favour of creation by intelligence', yet he added that it was possible that a recently proposed alternative explanation for this evidence might turn out to be a better one. He was adamant that the existence of evil in the world established that no being could exist who was both omnipotent and perfectly morally good. Mill had a tremendous amount of respect for the moral teachings of Jesus, which he saw as only one part of a complete morality, but he believed that these teachings had been perverted by modern Christianity' (Dictionary of Nineteenth-Century British Philosophers, Bristol, Thoemmes Press, 2002).

A very fine and clean copy, near mint. 536-544 pp. Rare offprint issue of Weaver's famous essay on complexity "in which he rather boldly claimed that while "the 19th century was the century of disorganized complexity - the 20th century must be that of organized complexity". Weaver is widely recognized as one of the pioneers of machine translation, and as an important figure in creating support for science in the United States. Weaver stated that that the complexity of a particular system is the degree of difficulty in predicting the properties of the system, if the properties of the system's parts are given and he divides complexity between disorganized complexity, and organized complexity. This categorization has deeply influenced contemporary thinking about complexity."For historical setting, this article was published shortly after World War II and is influenced by operations research and the first computers developed for for the war effort. During the war, Weaver headed the Applied Mathematics Panel (AAAS, 2004), a position that led to familiarity with many of the top scientists of the era. It was a time of great advances in science and optimism for more growth in the future. This article was also written at the time Weaver was formulating ideas that would later be published with Claude Shannon in The mathematical theory of communication, which laid the foundation for information theory. Weaver's thoughts during this time on how computers might be employed in machine translation were later collected in his famous memorandum on the topic that "formulated goals and methods before most people had any idea of what computers might be capable of".
