Rare first German translation of Osterwald's "Traite des sources de la corruption" in which he argued for a practical piety, diverging from orthodoxy, such as a job as a central obligation.

(Map of Etna - Craters and Lava of 1852 & 1853 - Fossil leaves from Etna), 23 textillustrations. Firs printing of this importent investigation of the processes involved in the creation of volcanoes. Lyell had been convinced, in his study of Madeira and the Canaries, that the evidence on which Leopold von Buch had founded his his theory of craters of elevation (1825) was completely fallacious. Lyell "found that Etna had neither a linear axis nor a single center of upheaval. Instead he found two earlier centers of eruption in the Val del Bove. From each center the beds of lava sloped away in all directions, but beds of lava arising from Etna's modern center of eruption had flowed over and buried those from the earlier centers. Lyell considered this to be decisive evidence against the crater-of-elevationn theory because "although one cone of eruption may envelope and bury another cone of eruption, it is impossible for a cone of upheaval to mantle round and overwhelm another cone of upheaval so as to reduce the whole mass to one conical mountain.". He concluded that the conical form of Etna, as of all volcanoes, was entirely the result of the long-continued process of volcanic eruption."(DSB).Charles Lyell (1797-1875) probably accomplished more in the advancement of geological knowledge than any other one man. The world-wide influence of his treatises and textbooks established the principle of uniformitarianism.

First edition of Hess's most famous paper, in which he outlined his law on thermochemistry. His principle, a progenitor for the first law of thermodynamics, came to be called Hess's law. It states that in a series of chemical reactions, the total energy gained or lost depends only on the initial and final states, regardless of the number or path of the steps. This is also known as the law of constant heat summation. Hess described here his newly discovered law, known as Hess's Law, in form of a letter to Arago. (The letter was also published in Comptes Rendus in a slightly modified form). "Here thermochemistry received its first importent advance at the hands of Germain Hess, who showed that the heat evolved in a reaction is the same regardless of whether the reaction is carried out directly or in a number of steps..." (Leicester & Klickstein "A Source Book in Chemistry", pp. 329-332). This paper preceded the larger papers also published in "Annales de Chimie et de Physique" and the original (and larger) paper in "Bulletin scientifique, Academie impériale des Sciences (St. Petersbourg, 1840)". The volume contains also papers by Laurent, Biot, Mulder, Melloni etc.Parkinson "Breakthroughs" 1840 C.

Widemargined, a few scattered brownspots. Some leaves in lower right corner with a wormtract, no loss of letters. First printing of these 9 papers by the wellknown French chemist. Proust formulated the "Law of constant proportion" which lead to the controversy with Berthollet.

(16),224,(16) pp., 1 folded engraved map (Belgium vet. oudt Nederland en desselfs Bevolkinge), 14 engraved plates and 7 large engravings in the text. Some of the plates a bit shaved in right margins. Light traces of use. The work offered here is the fourth edition of his "The Nederlantsche Antiquiteyten", published from 1613 onwards, and is an adaptation of his "Restitution of Decayed Intelligence in Antiquities", published in Antwerpen 1605 and considered his main work. From 1617 to about 1630 Verstegan was a prolific writer in Dutch, producing epigrams, characters, jestbooks, polemics etc. The work is remarkable as perhaps the first endeavour to persuade Englishmen that they should regard with special predilection the remains of Anglo-Saxon in their language, customs, and laws a matter in which (despite obvious faults) he was far in advance of his age, when the influence of Latin was so predominant.

First appearance of an importent paper in optical theory in which Brewster describes his discovery that double refraction phenomena can be induced by mechanical means on different kinds of crystals by compression and deflection.Together with Brewsters paper comes a paper by Everard Home "Some account of the feet of those animals whose progressive motion can be carried on in opposition to gravity." Pp. 149-155 and 2 engraved plates.

First appearance of the paper in which Wollaston explains his invention and function of photography's first lens, the Wollaston Meniscus, invented more than 25 years before the first photography appeared."Wollaston developed the first lens specifically for camera lens called Wollaston's meniscus lens, or just meniscus lens, in 1812. The lens was designed to improve the image projected by the camera obscura. By changing the shape of the lens, Wollaston was able to project a flatter image, eliminating much of the distortion that was a problem with many of that day's biconvex lenses" (DSB).
