Han blev på foranledning af Leonhard Euler ansat som "Mechanicus" ved Akademiet i St. Petersburg i 1748 og blev 5 år senere udnævnt til professor i København. Kratzenstein er mest kendt for sine experimenter over elektricitetens virkninger på forskellige områder, bl. indenfor medicinen (således var han den første, som ved hjælp af gnisten fra en Leydner-flaske, kurerede en paralyseret finger, og således grundlæggeren af elektro-terapien), og han var den første fysiker overhovedet, som søgte at udfinde forholdet mellem den elektriske kraft of dens virkningsafstand, på samme måde som gravitet er en simpel funktion af afstand. - Bibl. First printing of Forchhammer's - the father of Danish geology - pioneer-work in oceanography and hydrography, as it is the first scientific investigation in this field of research. This large paper grew out of the Danish publication "Om Søvandets Bestanddele og deres Fordeling i Havet." (1859), but is much enlarged, augmented with new facts acquired by many new samples of sea-water from all ower the world. "It contains a determination as complete as possible of the distribution of the saline substances at the surfaces of the different parts of the sea, and in different depths at the same place."(Forchhammer)."Forchhammer's fundamental researches on the composition of seawater brought him international acclaim. He began this work in 1843, more as a geologist than as a chemist, to explain the phenomena that give rise to the deposits on the sea floor...He carried out analyses of over 160 samples collected for him over a twenty-year period by the Danish and British navies. He measures chlorine, sulfur, magnesium, calcium, and potassium gravimetrically with 100-pound samples, obtaining sodium from the differences....Forchhammer also posed in an elegant form the "geochemical balance problem" arising from the major sedimentary cycle: "Thus the quantity of the different elements in seawater is not proportional to the quantity of the elements which the river waters put into the sea, but inversely proportional to the facility with which the elements are made insoluble by general or organo-chemical action in the sea"" (DSB V: p. 72). The work was translated into English as "On the Components of Sea Water" (1865) in Phil. Transactions.

First printing of this important paper, which together with Becquerel's paper "Mémoire sur les effets èlectriques produits sous l'influence des rayons solaires" and "Recherches sur les effets de la radiation chimique de la lumière solaire, au moyen des courants électriques", published the same year, marks the beginning of Solar-Cell-Energy, the first step in a long path to solar panels, and a technology of immense importence for humanity. In 1923 Albert Einstein received the Nobel Prize for his theories explaining the photoelectric effect (his 1905-paper).The "photovoltaic effect" is the basic physical process through which a solar cell converts sunlight into electricity. In 1839, nineteen-year-old Edmund Becquerel, a French experimental physicist, discovered the photovoltaic effect while experimenting with an electrolytic cell made up of two metal electrodes. Becquerel found that certain materials would produce small amounts of electric current when exposed to light.

First printing of Beck's important paper in which he anticipates the discovery of the neutron by four years, a seminal contribution to the discovery of the nuclear shell model. In 1914, Moseley introduced the periodic table and in 1925, Pauli explained the periodicity by enumerating the electrons fitting in shells surrounding the atomic nucleus."It became apparent that there are, in general, several different isotopes per element. [...] This was a problem of nuclear physics since isotopes of the same element differ only by their isotopes. A first attempt was made in late 1927 by Beck [the present paper] in Vienna, who compiled a comprehensive table of known isotopes [...] The paper written more than four years before the discovery of the neutron, is remarkable not so much for its results but for two nearly prophetic statements:" (Brandt. The Harvest of a Century, p. 317). The prophetic statements in the present paper are: 1. "Die einfachste Annahme, die man diesbezüglich machen kann, ist, dass man sich die Kerne, analog wie die Elektronenhülle der Atome, schalenförmig aufgebaut denkt."
