CLAUSIUS, R. (RUDOLF). - THE ELECTRODYNAMIC LAW.
Herman H. J. Lynge & Søn A/S
lyn45074
Leipzig, Johann Ambrosius Barth, 1875. Without wrappers. In "Annalen der Physik und Chemie. Hrsg. von J.C. Poggendorff", Bd. 156, No 12 . Pp. 497-668 a. 1 plate. Clausius' paper: pp. 657-660. With titlepage to volume 156. A nick to inner margin of titlepage. First appearance of Clausius first paper on electrodynamics in which he replaced Weber's Law with another that would not give an unwanted force between charge and current."Clausius’ major effort in mathematical physics after 1875 involved his quest for an adequate electrodynamic theory. He spelled out the fundamental tenets to his approach in 1875: (Weber’s law was incorrect for the case where only one kind of electricity is assumed to move, since the equation entails that a current exert a force on a charge at rest; (2) a revision would be possible if one assumed that the electrodynamic action occurred via an intervening medium, for then electric particles that are not moving relative to each other (moving at equal velocities) could still exert forces on one another by virtue of their absolute motion in the medium; forces should not be restricted to the line joining two charges. In 1876 Clausius simplified the equation he had previously proposed by subjecting it to the condition of the conservation of energy. In doing so, however, he ignored the possibility that energy changes might occur in the intervening medium."(DSB).

GOULD, JOHN.
Herman H. J. Lynge & Søn A/S
lyn43991
London, Printed by Taylor and Francis - Published by the Author, (1862-) 73. Folio. Papersize 54,5x36,5 cm. Lithographed and fully handcoloured. Bird seen in natural habitat with flowering reed-mace. J. Gould & H.C. Richter, del. et lith. - Walter, Imp. Fine and clean. The plate is accompanied with the original textleaf. (2) pp. This is an original plate from Goulds great work "The Birds of Great Britain", issued between 1862 and 1873. The plates in this work were executed by Gould himself, and a few by J. Wolf, H.C. Richer and Hart. Together with Audubon's plates, the Gould-plates are considered the best bird-art ever produced, AND THE PLATES IN HIS "BIRDS OF GREAT BRITAIN" ARE THE PEAK OF GOULD'S ARTISTIC LIFE. In the foreword Gould stresses the difference from his "Birds of Europe" in the treatment of the illustrations, the inclusion here of the figures of the baby birds and nests, and he comments "Many of the public are quite unaware how the colouring of these large plates is accomplished; and not a few believe that they are produced by some mechanical process or by chromo-lithography. This, however is not the case; every sky with its varied tints and every feather of each bird were coloured by hand; and when it is considered that nearly two hundred and eighty thousand illustrations in the present work have been so treated, it will most likely cause some astonishment to those who give the subject a thought.". Elsewhere he remarked upon employing "almost all colourists in London." - Wood p. 364. - Nissen No. 372. - Sitwell 102. - Zimmer pp. 261-62. - Not in Jean Anker.

London, Printed for Alexander Tilloch,1802. 8vo. Contemp. blue boards. Titlelabel with gilt lettering. Spine slightly rubbed. In: "The Philosophical Magazine. By Alexander Tilloch", Vol. IV. Engraved portrait (Richard Kirwan). 380 pp. a. 6 engraved plates. Dalton's paper: pp. 169-173. First printing of an importent paper in which Dalton clarifies certain unclear points in his famous essays "Experimental essays on the constitution of mixed gases....", published 1801-02. These essays "gave him at once European reputation... by these discoveries meteorology was constituted a science" (D.N.B.)."I propose therefore (after some misunderstanding from Thomson and others), 1st, To state, in as clear a point of view as the subject will admit, the principles which I assume: 2d, To show that the consequences which I have deduced from them are legitimate; and, particularly, that mixed elastic fluids ought not to arrange themselves according to their specific gravity: and, 3d, To demonsrate that the supposition of the gases constituting the stmospere being held in a state of equal diffusion by chemical affinity, is not only inconsistent with the phaenomena, but is completely absurd" (John Dalton in the paper).Smyth "John Dalton... A Bibliography", No 29 (listing it here as it was the same text as part 4, which it is not).

DARWIN, G.H. - A PIONEERING WORK IN COSMOLOGY BY THE "FATHER OF GEOPHYSICS"
Herman H. J. Lynge & Søn A/S
lyn42401
(London, Harrison and Sons, 1880). 4to. No wrappers as extracted from "Philosophical Transactions", Vol. 171 - Part II. Pp. 713-891. A few textilustr. Clean and fine. First printing of a main work by the "Father of Geophysics", in which he set up the hypothesis, that the results from his earlier investigations on the relations between the tidal frictions on the earth and the motion of the moon away from the earth, could be used to explain the formation of satellites of the other planets and their movements in relation to the sun.. (In DSB it is called "a monumental paper")."Darwin's most significant contribution to the history of science lies in his pioneering work in the application of detailled dynamical analysis to cosmological and geological problems. That many of his conclusions are now out of date should in no way diminish the historical interest in his experiments, nor the importent service thet he rendered cosmogony by the example he gave of putting various hypotheses to the test of actual calculations. Darwin's method remains a milestone in the development of cosmogony, and subsequent investigators have favored it over the merely qualitative arguments prevalent until that time."(DSB).

Pasteur's: pp. 615-618. Clean and fine. First printing of an importent paper in biochemistry announcing the discovery of enantioselectivity. Pasteur's milestone discovery of biological enantioselectivity began the process that in the long run established the fundamental importance of molecular chirality in biology."In 1858 he made an importent discovery in connexion with the fermentation of tartaric acid. he observed, if incompletely, the characters of the organisms which causes the fermentation in ammonium tartrate, and transferring a trace of the organism to a solution of racemate of ammonia, which of course is optically inactive, he found that the fermenting solution gradually acquired a left rotatory power until finally the right-handed salt disappeared and laevotartaric acid was left untouched. The organism which achieced this feat was probably a PENICILLIM (1860)." (Bulloch, The History of Bacteriology, p. 60).
