1928. 8vo. In the original printed wrappers. In "Nordisk Statistisk Tidsskrift", Band 8. With author's presentation stamp: "Hommage de l'auteur" to front wrappers. Owner's signature of statistician Anders Hald (the author of "A History of Mathematical Statistics") to front wrapper. Wrappers with wear and part of upper and lower part of spine missing. Internally fine and clean. Pp. 36-102. First edition of Frisch's first important essay on econometric methodology. Frisch was one of the founders of economics in general as a modern science. He coined a number of new words including econometrics and macroeconomics. He helped set up Neo-Walrasian research. He formalized production theory. In econometrics he worked on time series and linear regression analysis. With Frederick Waugh, he introduced the celebrated Frisch-Waugh theorem (Econometrica1933) (sometimes referred to as the Frisch-Waugh-Lovell theorem). His 1933 work on impulse-propagation business cycles became one of the principles of modern New Classical business cycle theory. He also helped introduce econometric modeling to government economic planning and accounting. He was one of the founders of the Econometric Society and editor of Econometrica for over twenty years. The Frisch Medal, so named in his honor, is given every two years for the best paper published in the Econometrica in the previous five years. (The New Palgrave).

Herman H. J. Lynge & Søn A/S
lyn47108
(London, Taylor and Francis, 1862). 4to. No wrappers as extracted from "Philosophical Transactions" 1862 - Vol. 151. Pp. 133-160, 1 large textillustration. First appearance of Joule's paper in which he describes his importent improvement of the Steam-Engine, using the principles of the first law of thermodynamics which he himself helped to establish."In addition, numerous other researches stand to Joules credit -- the work done in compressing gases and the thermal changes they undergo when forced under pressure through small apertures (with Lord Kelvin), the change of volume on solution, the change of temperature produced by the longitudinal extension and compression of solids, etc. It was during the experiments involved by the first of these inquiries that Joule was incidentally led to appreciate the value of surface condensation in increasing the efficiency of the steam engine. A new form of condenser was tested on the small engine employed, and the results it yielded formed the starting-point of a series of investigations which were aided by a special grant from the Royal Society, and were described in an elaborate memoir presented to it on the 13th of December 1860 (the paper offered). His results, according to Kelvin, led directly and speedily to the present practical method of surface-condensation, one of the most important improvements of the steam engine, especially for marine use, since the days of James Watt. Joule died at Sale on the 11th of October 1889."(NNDB)

RITTER, (JOHANN W.). - THE DISCOVERY OF ULTRAVIOLET LIGHT.
Herman H. J. Lynge & Søn A/S
lyn43638
Halle, Rengerschen Buchhandlung, 1803. Without wrappers as extracted from "Annalen der Physik. Herausgegeben von Ludwig Wilhelm Gilbert", Jahrgang 1802, Bd. 12, Zwölftes Stück. Pp. 409-416. Titlepage to vol. 12. This is Ritter's first expositon of his discovery of ultraviolet light. It was announced the year before in a halfpage letter addressed to Gilbert's Annalen and printed in the Annalen. With that discovery, it became clear that visible light represents no more than a fraction of a continous spectrum.A year earlier, in 1800, William Herschel discovered infrared light. This was the first time that a form of light beyond visible light had been detected. After hearing about Herschel's discovery of an invisible form of light beyond the red portion of the spectrum, Ritter decided to conduct experiments to determine if invisible light existed beyond the violet end of the spectrum as well. He had heard that blue light caused a greater reaction in silver chloride than red light did. Ritter decided to measure the rate at which silver chloride reacted to the different colors of light. He directed sunlight through a glass prism to create a spectrum. He then placed silver chloride in each color of the spectrum and found that it showed little change in the red part of the spectrum, but darkened toward the violet end of the spectrum. Johann Ritter then decided to place silver chloride in the area just beyond the violet end of the spectrum, in a region where no sunlight was visible. To his amazement, this region showed the most intense reaction of all. This showed for the first time that an invisible form of light existed beyond the violet end of the visible spectrum. This new type of light, which Ritter called Chemical Rays, later became known as ultraviolet light or ultraviolet radiation (the word ultra means beyond).

Berlin, Uppsala u.Stockholm, Paris, 1885). 4to. No wrappers as extracted from "Acta Mathematica. Hrsg. von G. Mittag-Leffler", vol. 7, pp.201-258. First edition of Minkowski's Inaugural-Dissertation in the periodical form."Minkowski received his doctorate in 1885 at Königsberg; he taught at Bonn undtil 1894, then returned to Königsberg for two years. In 1896 he went to Zürich.where he was Hurwitz' collegue until 1902; Hilbert then obtained the creation of a new professorship for him at Göttingen, where Minkowski taught until his death. From his Grand Prix paper (1883) to hisd last work Minkowski never ceased to return to the arithmetic of quadratic forms in n ariables ("n-ary Forms"), Ever since Gauss' pioneering work on binary quadratic forms at the beginning of the nineteenth century, the generalization of his results to n-ary had been the goal of many mathematicians, including, Eisenstein, Hermite, Smith, Jordan, and Poincaré."(DSB). - An error in this paper was found and corrected by C.L. (Paris, Bachelier), 1848. 4to. No wrappers. In: "Comptes Rendus Hebdomadaires des Séances de L'Academie des Sciences", Tome 26, No 8. Pp. (233-) 264. (Entire issue offered). Semmelweis's paper: pp. 254-255. Clean and fine. First French announcement of this epochal event in the history of medicine, the discovery of the etiology and prevention of childbed fever. First announce by Ferdinand von Hebra in December 1847, then followed (only 2 months) after by the French announcement."Although Semmelweis's importent discoveries were made in the 1840s, he did not publish them immediately. The first printed reports of his findings were written by his collegues and were published in various German, French, or English Journals. Semmelweis himself gave three lectures before the Imperial and Royal Medical Society of Vienna in 1850 but did not publish his complete discussion of "The etiology, concept, and prophylaxis of childbeed fever" until 1861, having previously contributed several shorter accounts to Hungarian medical journals."(Norman "One Hundred Books famous in Medicine", p. 265).Semmelweis demonstrated that puerperal fever (also known as childbed fever) was contagious and that this incidence could drastically be reduced by appropriate hand washing by medical care-givers. He made this discovery in 1847 while working in the Maternity Department of the Vienna Lying-in Hospital. His failure to convince his fellow doctors led to a tragic conclusion. However, he was ultimately vindicated. While employed as assistant to the professor of the maternity clinic at the Vienna General Hospital in Austria in 1847, Semmelweis introduced hand washing with chlorinated lime solutions for interns who had performed autopsies. This immediately reduced the incidence of fatal puerperal fever from about 10 percent (range 5-30 percent) to about 1-2 percent.Toward the end of 1847, accounts of Semmelweis's work began to spread around Europe. Semmelweis and his students wrote letters to the directors of several prominent maternity clinics describing their recent observations. Ferdinand von Hebra, the editor of a leading Austrian medical journal, announced Semmelweis's discovery in the December 1847 and April 1848 issues of the medical journal. Hebra claimed that Semmelweis's work had a practical significance comparable to that of Edward Jenner's introduction of cowpox inoculations to prevent smallpox.Garrison & Morton: 6275 (German version).
