HOFMANN, A.W. (AUGUST WILHELM von). - THE TRUE NATURE OF AMINES DEMONSTRATED.
Herman H. J. Lynge & Søn A/S
lyn44307
(London, Richard Taylor, 1851). 4to. No wrappers as extracted from "Philosophical Transactions" 1851 - Part I. Pp. 357-398. First appearance of a landmark paper in organic chemistry in which Hofmann demonstrates the true nature of amines."Wurtz had shown the existence of methyl and ethyl amines and had suggested that that they may be regarded as derivatives of ammonia. Hofmannproved this in adetailled study, in which he showed that all hydrogens of ammonia, and even of the ammonia radical, could be replaced by organic groups to give primary, secondary, and tertiary amines, and quaternary ammonium compounds. In the course of this work, he also cleared up the relation between ammonia and the ammonium radical which had long troubles chemists. The investigation was carried out in 1850, at a time when the type theory was foremost in theminds of organic chemists. It was therefore natural that Hofmann should formulate his nes compounds as representative of the "ammonia type". The formulas which he wrote, however scarcely differ from those used today. These clear examples helped Frankland in developing his theory of variable valence."(Klickstein p. 364). Klickstein's selection is taken form the offered item pp. 392-397.

Paris, Crochard, 1827. Without wrappers. In: Annales de Chimie et de Physique, Par MM. Gay-Lussac et Arago.", Tome 35 (last issue). Halftitle to vol. 35. Pp. 337-400. Dutrochet's paper: pp. 393-400. Some browning to halftitle. Some scattred brownspots. First appearance of Dutrochet's famous paper in which he coined the terms 'endosmosis' and 'exosmosis', describing the process by which water passes through a membrane from a solution on the one side to another solution on the other side. This pressure, due to the passage of water has been called "osmotic". His conclusion, that the pressure is proportional to the concentration of the solution was confirmed by Karl Vierordt in 1848."In 1827, the French physiologist R.J.H. Dutrochet carried out experiments to demonstrate and measure the diffusion of a liquid through a membrane, or 'Osmosis' as it is now called. Dutrochet showed that when a glass tube, filled with salt solution and closed by a piece of pig's bladder, is immersed vertically in water, water passes through the membrane into the tube until the level of liquid in the tube is considerably higher than teh level of the water outside."(Taton "Science in the 19th century", p.256)Garrison & Morton No 670. - Gedeon: 63.2 (ref. to a paper from 1828).

Leipzig, Johann Ambrosius Barth, 1874. 8vo. Contemp. hcalf. 5 raised bands, gilt spine and gilt lettering to spine. A few scratches to spine. Small stamp on verso of first -and general- titlepage. In: "Annalen der Physik und Chemie. Hrsg. von J.C. Poggendorff", Sechste Reihe Bd. 3, (= Poggendorff Bd. 153). X,636 pp., 4 plates. (Entire volume offered). Braun's paper: pp. 556-563. First printing of Brown's importent paper in which he described his discovery of a semiconductor diode, noting that electrical currents flows freely in only one direction at the contact between a metal point and a galena crystal."In 1874 Braun published the results of his research on mineral metal sulfides. He found that these crystals conducted electric currents in only one direction. This information was important in electrical research and in measuring another property of substances, the electrical conductivity, but Braun’s discovery did not have immediate practical application. In the early twentieth century the principle that Braun had discovered was employed in crystal radio receivers."(DSB).The Nobel Prize in Physics 1909 was awarded jointly to Guglielmo Marconi and Karl Ferdinand Braun "in recognition of their contributions to the development of wireless telegraphy".

Berlin, Springer, 1932. 8vo. Bound in contemporary half cloth with gilt lettering, In "Zeitschrift für Physik", Band 75, 1932. Entire issue offered. Two stamps to title page, otherwise fine. Pp. 622-647. [Entire volume: VIII, 850 pp + frontiespiece]. First appearance of Fock's seminal paper in which he introduced his algebraic construction used in quantum mechanics to construct the quantum states space of a variable or unknown number of identical particles from a single particle Hilbert space, often referred to as Fock space. Technically, the Fock space is (the Hilbert space completion of) the direct sum of the symmetric or antisymmetric tensors in the tensor powers of a single-particle Hilbert space H."Between 1928 and 1934, Fok obtained important results in the quantum field theory. He completed the mathematical method of secondary quantization proposed by Paul A.M. Dirac and developed by Pascual Jordan and Eugene Wigner. It has been shown that this method does not go beyond the traditional framework of quantum mechanics (as Jordan argued) and that the two ways of description are completely equivalent. As early as 1934 Fok suggested describing a system with a variable number of particles (bosons) in the representations of the secondary quantization with the aid of a generating functional ("Fok’s functional").In his papers Fok introduced a number of new notions. such as "the Fok space" (a Hilbert space in the representation of secondary quantization). In papers written with Dirac and Boris Podolsky (1932), Dirac’s results on interaction of charged particles by the exchange of virtual photons were extended. The one-dimensional problem solved by Dirac was generalized to the realistic three-dimensional case: the multitime formalism of Dirac, Podolsky, and Fok was introduced; and quantum electrodynamics was formulated in its modern form." Leipzig, J.A. Barth, 1874. Without wrappers. In "Annalen der Physik und Chemie. Hrsg. von J.C. Poggendorff", Jubelband. With titlepage to "Jubelband". Titlepage with a stamp. Pp. 557-584 First appearance of a fundamental paper in modern optics in which Helmholtz published his discovery of the resolution limit of the microscope. He found that the limit for the difference of magnitude that we are able to distinguish plainly is in general found equal to half the wave-lenght of theparticular light employed. A further increase in optical power beyond that of the best modern instruments does not therefore seem possible.

The plates somewhat soiled. Textpages fine and clean. First appearance of these three importent papers on animal electricity, being some of the foundational papers in electrophysiology. "In 1842 he made his most famous discovery, the induced twitch, and began publishing his works in English, with a series of memoirs send to the Royal Society."(DSB).In these papers Matteucci describes several arrangements by which he was enabled to make new experiments in confirmation of the laws of muscular currents, of which he has given an account in his recent work "Traité des Phénomenes Electro-Physiologiques des Animaux." He finmds that, in these experiments, the employment of a galvanometer is unnecessary, as the sensibility of the electroscopic frog of Galvani gives sufficient indications of the electrical current without the use of that instrument. From these experiments he derives someimportent generalisations about musculat currents.

[Paris, Presses Universitaires de France, 1966]. 4to. In the original stapled blank blue printed wrappers. Offprint from "Institut des Hautes Études Scientifiques. Publications Mathématiques" No. 29. Light wear to extrimities, otherwise fine and clean. Pp. 95-103, (1). Scarce offprint issue of Grothendieck's seminal paper in which he founded crystalline cohomology. In the crystalline topology which is the basis of this theory, covering maps are given by infinitesimal thickenings together with divided power structures. The crystalline covers of a fixed scheme form a category with no final object.
