Library label pasted on to pasted down front free end-paper. Library stamp, a small marginal repair, and some pencil-annotations to first front-wrapper. Internally fine and clean. [Rostow:] Pp. 1-16. [Entire issue: VIII, 552, (4) pp.], . First edition of probably the most important and influential work ever to be published within development economics. The work had profound influence not only on contemporary economics and politics but also on economic history where it marked an entirely new period of historiography and theories within economic history. His theory became one of the important concepts in the theory of modernization in the social evolutionism."Rostow's analysis of economic growth was based on the developmental stages through which each country goes. Rostow saw each country evolving through five stages of economic growth. These are the traditional society, the preconditions for take-off, the take-off [The take-off is really an industrial revolution that arrives when the old barriers and resistances to steady growth are finally overcome], the drive to maturity, and the age of high mass consumption." (Oser, The Evolution of Economic Thought, P. 368)."Rostow's exposition has received very wide attention and approval, perhaps for several reasons. First, it is evolutionary; second, it is grounded in historical studies; third, it seems to show a predestined affluence for all; finally, it presents a case for an inner logic and drive from one stage to the next that requires no conscious decision-making or deliberate efforts to promote growth; it is analytic without being programmatic." (Ibid.).Walt Whitman Rostow (1916-2003) had a prominent role in the shaping of US foreign policy in Southeast Asia during the 1960s, he was a staunch anti-communist, and was noted for a belief in the efficacy of capitalism and free enterprise. Rostow served as a major adviser on national security affairs under the Kennedy and Johnson administrations..In 1960 Rostow published the book "The Stages of Economic Growth: A non-communist manifesto", in which he elaborated the ideas presented in the present paper.

Deville's paper: pp. 857-861. First printing of Deville's first paper on "Dissociation", establishing a new type of high temperature chemistry."The effect of heat on chemical reactions was of particular interest. From the time of Bergman it had been realized that reactions often followed a course at high temperatures which differed from that followed at lower ones. In 1857, Henri Deville began a eries of studies which established quantitatively a new type of high- temperature reaction... In the course of his studies on the preparation of sodium and potassium and their use as reducing agents in the manufacture of other metals, Deville often used high temperatures. He was aware of the decompositions which often occurred under these conditions, and he suspected that such decompositions were of very frequent occurrence. He therfore undertook the study of reactions which occurred reversibly at high temperature. Such reactions he called 'dissociations', and by an extensive series of studies he showed the importence of dissociation as a general phenomenon in chemistry." (Leicester a. Klickstein "A Source Book in Chemistry", pp. 392 ff.).

London, Longmans, Green, Reader, and Dyer, 1874. 8vo. In publisher's original embossed cloth-binding with gilt lettering to spine. Spine-ends chipped and hinges weak. Previous owner's name to front free end-paper. Internally nice and clean. XI, 257, (3) pp. First edition of Mill work on religion. "Mill was somewhat cagey on this subject, both in public discourse - he refused to answer questions about his religious beliefs while running for Parliament - and in his writings. In correspondence Mill said that he had never had a belief in God. He did write that there is enough evidence for a divine designer/creator in nature to 'afford a large balance of probability in favour of creation by intelligence', yet he added that it was possible that a recently proposed alternative explanation for this evidence might turn out to be a better one. He was adamant that the existence of evil in the world established that no being could exist who was both omnipotent and perfectly morally good. Mill had a tremendous amount of respect for the moral teachings of Jesus, which he saw as only one part of a complete morality, but he believed that these teachings had been perverted by modern Christianity' (Dictionary of Nineteenth-Century British Philosophers, Bristol, Thoemmes Press, 2002).

[No printer], 1948. 8vo. In the original printed grey wrappers. Offprint from "American Scientist, Autunmn Issue, 1948, Vol. 36, No. 4". A very fine and clean copy, near mint. 536-544 pp. Rare offprint issue of Weaver's famous essay on complexity "in which he rather boldly claimed that while "the 19th century was the century of disorganized complexity - the 20th century must be that of organized complexity". Weaver is widely recognized as one of the pioneers of machine translation, and as an important figure in creating support for science in the United States. Weaver stated that that the complexity of a particular system is the degree of difficulty in predicting the properties of the system, if the properties of the system's parts are given and he divides complexity between disorganized complexity, and organized complexity. This categorization has deeply influenced contemporary thinking about complexity."For historical setting, this article was published shortly after World War II and is influenced by operations research and the first computers developed for for the war effort. During the war, Weaver headed the Applied Mathematics Panel (AAAS, 2004), a position that led to familiarity with many of the top scientists of the era. It was a time of great advances in science and optimism for more growth in the future. This article was also written at the time Weaver was formulating ideas that would later be published with Claude Shannon in The mathematical theory of communication, which laid the foundation for information theory. Weaver's thoughts during this time on how computers might be employed in machine translation were later collected in his famous memorandum on the topic that "formulated goals and methods before most people had any idea of what computers might be capable of". (Griffin, Information theory of Claude Shannon & Warren Weaver).

The original Frensh having the title: Recherches sur les lois de dilation des solides, des liquides et des fluides élastiques, et sur la mesure exacte des temperatures.""In 1815 Dulong’s famous collaboration with the mathematical physicist Alexis Thérèse Petit began; it produced three important memoirs on heat (of which this is the first). The best-known part of this work is the statement of the law of constant atomic heats that bears their names, .... They began with the fundamental problem of measuring quantities of heat, which involved a critical analysis of thermometric scales. In 1804-1805 Gay-Lussac had carried out a comparison of mercury and air thermometers between 0°C. and 100°C. Dulong and Petit extended the range of comparison up to 300°C. and found an increasing discrepancy between the two scales at higher temperatures." (DSB).
