BECQUEREL, HENRI et P. (PIERRE) CURIE. - REPORTING PHYSIOLOGICAL EFFECTS OF RADIUM.

lyn47432
(Paris, Gauthier-Villars), 1901. 4to. No wrappers. In: "Comptes Rendus Hebdomadaires des Séances de L'Academie des Sciences", Tome 132, No 22.. Pp. (1277-) 1375. (Entire issue offered). The paper: pp. 1289-1291. First printing of a milestone paper in medical physiology as the report given of the physiological effects (radiactive burns) on his own arm lead directly to study the actions of radium on different diseases and its medical use in general. Radium's use gave promising results as it destroyed diseased cells, tumors and some cancers. The therapeutic method was to be called "Curietherapy"."The German scientists Walkhoff and Giesel announced in 1900 that the new substance had certain physiological effects; Pierre Curie at once applied the technique which seemed to him most practical. Indifferent to danger, he exposed his arm to the action of radium. To his joy, a lesion appeared. He watched over it, followed its evolution and, in a report to the Academy, phlegmatically described the symptoms observed (the offered paper). After the action of the rays, the skin became red over a surface of six square centimetres; the appearance was that of a burn, but the skin was not painful, or barely so. At the end of several days the redness, without growing larger, began to increase in intensity; on the twentieth day it formed scabs, and then a wound which was dressed with bandages; on the forty-second day the epidermis began to form again on the edges, working toward the centre, and fifty-two days after the action of the rays there was still a surface of one square centimetre in the condition of a wound, which assumed a greyish appearance indicating deeper mortification." HERSCHEL, WILLIAM. - DETRONING THE SUN AS THE CENTER OF THE UNIVERSE.

lyn45882
(London, W. Bulmer and Co., 1805). 4to. No wrappers as extracted from "Philosophical Transactions" 1805 - Part II. Pp. 233-256 a. 1 engraved plate, folded. Clean and fine. First printing of an importent paper in cosmology in which Herschel's by analyzing a large number of stars, believed that he could explain the regularities he observed by assuming that the sun itself was moving toward a point in the consellation of Hercules. "Just as Copernicus had detroned the earth as the motionless center of the universe, so Herschel detroned the sun."(Asimov). - In this paper he tries to estimate the speed of the sun's motion. In a memoir published in 1783 Herschel had been occupied with the possibility that the sun was moving relative to the stars. "More than 20 years later (1805, in the paper offered) Herschel took up the question again, using six of the brightest stars in a collection of the proper motions of 36 published by Maskelyne in 1790, which were much more reliable than any earlier ones, and employing more elaborate processes of calculation; again the apex was placed in the constellation of Hercules, though at a distance of nearly 30 degr. from the position given in 1783. Herschel's results were avowedly to a large extent speculative and were received by contemporary astronomers with a large measure of distrust; but a number of far more elaborate modern investigations of the same subject have confirmed the general correctness of his work."(Berry "A Short History of Astronomy", p. 346.).

(No place), 1963-64. Xerox-copies (A4) inserted in brown folder with author's inscription to top right corner of title page. (1), 7, 5, 11, 13, 7, 10, 6, (2), 10 pp. Minor corrections throughout the text. A very nice and clean manuscript. Erling Svendrup's own copies of his teaching-papers for the Fall Term 1963 and Spring Term 1964. They give a unique insight into how Svendrup taught and how his ideas were developed. Erling Sverdrup was a founding father of mathematical statistics and modern actuarial science in Norway. He exercised profound influence on how statistical studies were formed and executed in Norway. The Norwegian edition of his statistics textbook Laws and chance variations had a great impact on a generation of Norwegian actuaries and statisticians, and his lecture notes in actuarial mathematics were decades ahead of contemporary textbooks. Unfortunately, these lecture notes were never translated and widely publicized. He has made important contributions to life-insurance mathematics, survival analysis and event history analysis, where he, at an early stage, advocated the use of Markov chain models for studying disability. a number of important contributions have only appeared in lecture notes or technical reports.

CLAUSIUS, R. (RUDOLF). - AVOGADRO'S HYPOTHESIS CONFIRMED AND EVAPORATION EXPLAINED.
Herman H. J. Lynge & Søn A/S
lyn49326
Paris, Victor Masson, 1857. 8vo. Contemp. hcalf. Raised bands, gilt spine. A bit rubbed along edges. In: "Annales de Chimie et de Physique", 3ieme Serie, Tome 50. 512 pp. a. 1 folded engraved plate. (Entire volume offered). Clausius' paper: pp. 497-507. Stamp to verso of titlepage. Internally clean. First French version of this milestone paper on the Kinetic Theory of Gases - "Ueber die Art der Bewegung, welche wir Wärme nennen", 1857 - in which Clausius gives the physical explanation for the evaporation of a liquid and presents the first physical argument in support of Avogadro's hypothesis that equal volumes of gases at the same temperature and pressure contain equal numbers of molecules."In the paper "Ueber die Art der Bewegung, welche wir Wärme nennen.", Rudolf Clausius (1822-1888) established mathematically that the heat in a gas cannot be accounted for exclusively by translational motion of the molecules and asserts that molecules have rotational and vibratiional motion as well as translational motion. He consequently rejects the contentions the the translational kinetic energy is conserved during molecular collisions and that all molecules have equal, constant velocities. His allowancee for differing molecule velocities enables him to offer a new explanation of evaporation, asserting that he molecules able to overcome the attractive forces of the liquid and "escape" to the gaseous state are those with high velocities (and hence high kinetic energies). hence evaporation produces a loss of energy in the liquid and a decreasein temperature."(Parkinson in "Breakthroughs", 1857 C/P)."This 1857 paper (the paper offered) also marked another importent beginning in physical theory, for it presented the first physical argument in support of Avogadro's hypothesis that equal volumes of gases at the same temperature and pressure contain equal numbers of molecules. Clausius argued that if it were assumed that all types of molecules possess the same translational energy at equal temperatures, then, since all gases have the same relationship between pressure, volume, and temperature, they would necessartly contain equal numbers of molecules in equal volumes at the same temperatur and pressure. Avogadro's hypothesis, therefore, found support in the mechanical theory of heat, independently of the usual chemical arguments."(DSB III, p. 307).The volume contains JOULE'S famous paper "Remarques sur la nature de la chaleur et la constitution des fluides élastiques" (Extraits par M. Verdet). Originally published (1848) 1851. First French version. pp. 381-83.

Top of dust jacket with minor wear, otherwise a very fine and clean copy, near mint. First edition of Miller's highly personal and controversial play about Quintin, a New York Jewish intellectual who decides to reexamine his life in order to determine if he should marry his love, HolgaMiller was criticized for making the play to similar to his own personal life; Maggie's suicide is very similar to the suicide of Miller's renowned wife, Marilyn Monroe and the protagonist Quintin's thought about his failed marriages is often believed to be Miller's own thoughts about his failed marriage. "After the Fall" refers to mankind's fall from grace in Genesis and the loss of innocence. It also refers to Camus's novel The Fall, which likewise deals with guilt and lost innocence.

[Mathematische Annalen] 8vo. Original printed wrappers, no backstrip. In "Mathematische Annalen. Herausgegeben von A. Clebsch und C. Neumann. 51. Band. 4. Heft." Entire issue offered. A fine and clean copy. [Darwin:] Pp. 523-583. [Entire issue: Pp. 481-607 + 4 plates.]. First printing of Darwin's famous paper (including the abridgement published two years later) which contained the first systematic search for periodic orbits and work on the three body problem. "The paper, which had taken him three years to complete, contained the numerical calculations of periodic solutions of the restricted three body problem, together with a discussion of their stability. It provided not only extensive details of the numerical results but also a full description of the mathematical methods used to obtain them." (Barrow-Green, Poincaré and the three body problem, P. 194). Darwin was introduced to the three body problem through the works of Poincare. Following his accession to the Plumian chair Darwin delved even more deeply into the problems of the origin and evolution of the solar system, making numerous investigations of the figures of equilibrium of rotating masses of fluid and, later, making extensive studies of periodic orbits in the restricted problem of three bodies, carried out with special reference to cases obtaining for the particular values of the mass ratio of the two finite bodies of 1:10 and 1:1048 (the latter approximating the mass ratio of Jupiter to that of the sun).
