(4 - i.e. title-page and errata), 184 pp. The scarce first edition of Steffens' groundbreaking introductory lectures that were responsible for introducing German romanticism to Denmark, greatly influencing Danish literature and philosophy for decades to come. Henrik Steffens (1773 – 1845), was a Norwegian philosopher, scientist, and poet. Born in Stavanger, he moved to Copenhagen at the age of 14, with his family. Here, he studied theology and natural science. In 1796, he lectured at the University of Kiel, and in 1798, he went toJena to study the natural philosophy of Friedrich Schelling. In 188, he went to Freiberg, and in 1802 returned to Copenhagen, where he gave his legendary nine lectures at Elers Kollegium. These were published in 1803 as "Intrduktion til Philosophiske Forelæsninger" (Introduction to Philosophical Lectures). These lectures were groundbreaking in several regards and brought novel romanticist ideas to Denmark. They werre hugely succesful and came to influence the greatest thinkers of the Danish Golden Age, such as Oehlenschläger and Grundtvig. Friedrich Schleiermacher was so struck by the excellence of the lectures that he endeavoured to obtain for Steffens a chair in the new Berlin University in 1804, in order for his own ethical teachings to be supported in the scientific department.

(No place), 1963-64. Xerox-copies (A4) inserted in brown folder with author's inscription to top right corner of title page. (1), 7, 5, 11, 13, 7, 10, 6, (2), 10 pp. Minor corrections throughout the text. A very nice and clean manuscript. Erling Svendrup's own copies of his teaching-papers for the Fall Term 1963 and Spring Term 1964. They give a unique insight into how Svendrup taught and how his ideas were developed. Erling Sverdrup was a founding father of mathematical statistics and modern actuarial science in Norway. He exercised profound influence on how statistical studies were formed and executed in Norway. The Norwegian edition of his statistics textbook Laws and chance variations had a great impact on a generation of Norwegian actuaries and statisticians, and his lecture notes in actuarial mathematics were decades ahead of contemporary textbooks. Unfortunately, these lecture notes were never translated and widely publicized. He has made important contributions to life-insurance mathematics, survival analysis and event history analysis, where he, at an early stage, advocated the use of Markov chain models for studying disability. a number of important contributions have only appeared in lecture notes or technical reports.

Paris, Victor Masson, 1857. 8vo. Contemp. hcalf. Raised bands, gilt spine. A bit rubbed along edges. In: "Annales de Chimie et de Physique", 3ieme Serie, Tome 50. 512 pp. a. 1 folded engraved plate. (Entire volume offered). Clausius' paper: pp. 497-507. Stamp to verso of titlepage. Internally clean. First French version of this milestone paper on the Kinetic Theory of Gases - "Ueber die Art der Bewegung, welche wir Wärme nennen", 1857 - in which Clausius gives the physical explanation for the evaporation of a liquid and presents the first physical argument in support of Avogadro's hypothesis that equal volumes of gases at the same temperature and pressure contain equal numbers of molecules."In the paper "Ueber die Art der Bewegung, welche wir Wärme nennen.", Rudolf Clausius (1822-1888) established mathematically that the heat in a gas cannot be accounted for exclusively by translational motion of the molecules and asserts that molecules have rotational and vibratiional motion as well as translational motion. He consequently rejects the contentions the the translational kinetic energy is conserved during molecular collisions and that all molecules have equal, constant velocities. His allowancee for differing molecule velocities enables him to offer a new explanation of evaporation, asserting that he molecules able to overcome the attractive forces of the liquid and "escape" to the gaseous state are those with high velocities (and hence high kinetic energies). hence evaporation produces a loss of energy in the liquid and a decreasein temperature."(Parkinson in "Breakthroughs", 1857 C/P)."This 1857 paper (the paper offered) also marked another importent beginning in physical theory, for it presented the first physical argument in support of Avogadro's hypothesis that equal volumes of gases at the same temperature and pressure contain equal numbers of molecules. Clausius argued that if it were assumed that all types of molecules possess the same translational energy at equal temperatures, then, since all gases have the same relationship between pressure, volume, and temperature, they would necessartly contain equal numbers of molecules in equal volumes at the same temperatur and pressure. Avogadro's hypothesis, therefore, found support in the mechanical theory of heat, independently of the usual chemical arguments."(DSB III, p. 307).The volume contains JOULE'S famous paper "Remarques sur la nature de la chaleur et la constitution des fluides élastiques" (Extraits par M. Verdet). Originally published (1848) 1851. First French version. pp. 381-83.

Monconys meticulously recorded his experiences and observations during his travels across Europe, the Middle East and North Africa. His work is not merely a travelogue but a document of scientific inquiry, artistic appreciation, and cultural exchange offering valuable insights into the early modern period. Monconys's Voyages is of considerable interest for its observations on chemistry, physics, mathematics, astrology, antiquities and natural history. Brunet VI, p. 1056 - 19913.

First French edition of one of Faraday's most importent papers in which he announced his discovery of electromagnetic induction and hereby also created the first electric generator explained by "lines of force". This is the first Franch edition of the first series of Faradays "Experimental Researches in Electricity"."In 1821 a series of brilliant researches culminated in the discovery of electromagnetic rotation; in 1831, seemingly out of nowhere, came the discovery of electromagnetic induction and the beginning of the experimental researches in electricity which were to lead Faraday to the discovery of the laws of electrochemistry, specific inductive capacity, the Faraday effect, and the foundations of classical field theory."(DSB)."Among experimental philosophers Faraday holds by universal consent the foremost place. The memoirs in which his discoveries are enshrined will never ceaseto be read with admiration and delight; and future generations will preserve with an affection not less enduring the personal records and familiar letters, which recall the memory of his humble and unselfish spirit."(Edmund Whittaker in 'A History of the Theories of Aether and Electricity' p. 197.
