In: "Annalen der Physik und Chemie. Hrsg. von J.C. Poggendorff", Sechste Reihe Bd. 3, (= Poggendorff Bd. 153). X,636 pp., 4 plates. (Entire volume offered). Braun's paper: pp. 556-563. First printing of Brown's importent paper in which he described his discovery of a semiconductor diode, noting that electrical currents flows freely in only one direction at the contact between a metal point and a galena crystal."In 1874 Braun published the results of his research on mineral metal sulfides. He found that these crystals conducted electric currents in only one direction. This information was important in electrical research and in measuring another property of substances, the electrical conductivity, but Braun’s discovery did not have immediate practical application. In the early twentieth century the principle that Braun had discovered was employed in crystal radio receivers."(DSB).The Nobel Prize in Physics 1909 was awarded jointly to Guglielmo Marconi and Karl Ferdinand Braun "in recognition of their contributions to the development of wireless telegraphy".

Pp. 557-584 First appearance of a fundamental paper in modern optics in which Helmholtz published his discovery of the resolution limit of the microscope. He found that the limit for the difference of magnitude that we are able to distinguish plainly is in general found equal to half the wave-lenght of theparticular light employed. A further increase in optical power beyond that of the best modern instruments does not therefore seem possible.

Fner aspects of radiative processes, like line widths due to damping, required a more elaborate mathematical treatment [presented in the present paper]." (London, Taylor and Francis, 1863). 4to. No wrappers as extracted from "Philosophical Transactions" 1862 - Vol. 152 - Part II. Pp. 987-1017. Clean and fine. First appearance of a main paper in the electrical theory of submarine cables."An important paper of thirty quarto pages published in the ‘Transactions of the Royal Society’ for June 19, 1862, under the title ‘Experimental Researches on the Transmission of Electric Signals through submarine cables, Part I. Laws of Transmission through various lengths of one cable, by Fleeming Jenkin, Esq., communicated by C. Wheatstone, Esq., F.R.S.,’ contains an account of a large part of Jenkin’s experimental work in the Birkenhead factory during the years 1859 and 1860. This paper is called Part I. Part II. alas never appeared, but something that it would have included we can see from the following ominous statement which I find near the end of Part I.: ‘From this value, the electrostatical capacity per unit of length and the specific inductive capacity of the dielectric, could be determined. These points will, however, be more fully treated of in the second part of this paper.’ Jenkin had in fact made a determination at Birkenhead of the specific inductive capacity of gutta-percha, or of the gutta-percha and Chatterton’s compound constituting the insulation of the cable, on which he experimented. This was the very first true measurement of the specific inductive capacity of a dielectric which had been made after the discovery by Faraday of the existence of the property, and his primitive measurement of it for the three substances, glass, shellac, and sulphur; and at the time when Jenkin made his measurements the existence of specific inductive capacity was either unknown, or ignored, or denied, by almost all the scientific authorities of the day." (William Thomson (Lord Kelvin) in "Memoir of Fleeming Jenkin" by Robert Louis Stevenson).Jenkin, a British engineer, served as secretary of the British Association's Electric Standards Committee (formed in 1861), which was responsible for setting and naming the standard units of electrical quantity and resistance.

(No place, Oxford University Press, 1954). 8vo. Stapled. Extracted from "Biometrika", 1954. before being bound. Presumingly serving the purpose of an offprint. A very fine a clean copy, near mint. Pp. 130, (1), 131-139. First appearance of Fisher's paper on the analysis of variance."Fisher devised his own extension of significance testing, the remarkable analysis of variance. This was bound in with his novel ideas on the wide subject of the theory of experimental design. He emphasized not merely the desirability but the logical necessity, in the design of an experiment whose results could not be freed from error, of maximizing efficiency (by devices such as blocks and confounding), and of introducing randomization in such a way as to furnish a valid estimate of the residual error. Whereas the time-honored practice in handling several factors had been to vary only one at a time during the experiment, Fisher pointed out that simultaneous variation was essential to the detection of possible interaction between factors, and that this change could be made without extra cost (in terms of experimental size and operational effort). Entrained with these innovations was the use of randomized blocks and Latin squares for the actual disposition of the test units." (DSB)

The original Frensh having the title: Recherches sur les lois de dilation des solides, des liquides et des fluides élastiques, et sur la mesure exacte des temperatures.""In 1815 Dulong’s famous collaboration with the mathematical physicist Alexis Thérèse Petit began; it produced three important memoirs on heat (of which this is the first). The best-known part of this work is the statement of the law of constant atomic heats that bears their names, .... They began with the fundamental problem of measuring quantities of heat, which involved a critical analysis of thermometric scales. In 1804-1805 Gay-Lussac had carried out a comparison of mercury and air thermometers between 0°C. and 100°C. Dulong and Petit extended the range of comparison up to 300°C. and found an increasing discrepancy between the two scales at higher temperatures." (DSB).

[Entire issue: VIII, 552, (4) pp.], . First edition of probably the most important and influential work ever to be published within development economics. The work had profound influence not only on contemporary economics and politics but also on economic history where it marked an entirely new period of historiography and theories within economic history. His theory became one of the important concepts in the theory of modernization in the social evolutionism."Rostow's analysis of economic growth was based on the developmental stages through which each country goes. Rostow saw each country evolving through five stages of economic growth. These are the traditional society, the preconditions for take-off, the take-off [The take-off is really an industrial revolution that arrives when the old barriers and resistances to steady growth are finally overcome], the drive to maturity, and the age of high mass consumption." (Oser, The Evolution of Economic Thought, P. 368)."Rostow's exposition has received very wide attention and approval, perhaps for several reasons. First, it is evolutionary; second, it is grounded in historical studies; third, it seems to show a predestined affluence for all; finally, it presents a case for an inner logic and drive from one stage to the next that requires no conscious decision-making or deliberate efforts to promote growth; it is analytic without being programmatic." (Ibid.).Walt Whitman Rostow (1916-2003) had a prominent role in the shaping of US foreign policy in Southeast Asia during the 1960s, he was a staunch anti-communist, and was noted for a belief in the efficacy of capitalism and free enterprise. Rostow served as a major adviser on national security affairs under the Kennedy and Johnson administrations..In 1960 Rostow published the book "The Stages of Economic Growth: A non-communist manifesto", in which he elaborated the ideas presented in the present paper.
