MONGE, (GASPARD). - THE GENERAL REPRESENTATION OF DEVELOPABLE SURFACES.

(Paris, Moutard, Panckoucke, 1780). 4to. Extract from "Mémoires fe Mathematique et de Physique, Présentés à l'Academie des Sciences par divers Savans", Tome IX. Pp. 345-381 a. 2 folded engraved plates. And pp. 382-440 a. 3 folded engraved plates. Clean and fine. First printing of two importent papers by Monge in differential functions and infinitesimal geometry, - in the first he discussed the nature of the arbitrary functions involved in the integrals of, finite difference equations. He also considered the, equation of vibrating strings, a topic he later investigated more fully. In the second memoir Monge returned to infinitesimal geometry. Working on the theory of developable surfaces outlined by Euler in 1772, he applied it to the problem, of shadows and penumbrae and treated several, problems concerning ruled surfaces. "It is in this paper that he gives a general representation of developable surfaces..."(Morris Kline "Mathematical Thoughts from Ancient to Modern Times", p. 567).

ADAMS, J.C. (JOHN COUCH). - A NEW METHOD IN LUNAR THEORY INTRODUCED.

lyn50167
(London, Richard Taylor and William Francis, 1853) 4to. No wrappers as extracted from "Philosophical Transactions" 1853, Vol. 143. Pp. 397-406. First appearance of this importent paper by Adams, - famous for his co-discovery with Le Verrier, of Neptune in 1846 - in which he introduces new mathematical methods in dealing with the pertubations of the Moon, raising a sharp scientific controversy, and correcting Laplace's great memoir of 1788."He (Adams) was elected a fellow of Pembroke College in 1853, and shortly afterward he presented to the Royal Society a remarkable paper on the secular acceleration of the moon’s mean motion. This quantity was thought to have been definitively investigated by Pierre Simon de Laplace in 1788, but Adams showed that Laplace’s solution was incorrect. In particular, Laplace had ignored a variation in solar eccentricity that introduces into the differential equations for the moon’s motion a series of additional terms. Adams calculated the second term of the series, on which the secular acceleration depends, as 3771/64m4 the value computed from Laplace’s work was 2187/128 m4. The effect of the correction was to reduce the figure for the moon’s secular acceleration by about half, from 10?.58 to 5?.70.This paper caused a sharp scientific controversy, marked by angry chauvinism on the part of several French astronomers. Their attacks stimulated a number of independent investigations of the subject, all of which confirmed Adams’ result. The matter was definitely settled in his favor by 1861, but not without hard feelings."(DSB).

Paris, Etienne Michallet, 1678. 8vo. In contemporary full calf with five raised bands and richly gilt spine. All edges gilt. Small paper-label pasted on to top of spine. Parts of gilting worn off. Internally nice and clean. (12), 282 pp. First edition of Crasset’s work on the Oracle Sibyl. Jean Crasset, a 17th-century French Jesuit, is known for his writings on asceticism and philosophy. Among his numerous works is the present "Dissertation on the Oracles of Sibyl." At the close of the 17th century, various treatises on the Sibylline Oracles emerged often emphasizing their pagan origins. Crasset, however, strongly believed that the Sibylline Oracles were divine utterances of the Greek prophetess Sibyl. He aimed to demonstrate that these oracles were false Christian narratives while defending early church fathers who asserted their authenticity.

Berlin, Stockholm, Paris, Almqvist & Wiksell, 1908. 4to. Bound in contemporary half cloth with gilt lettering to spine. In "Acta Mathematica", Vol, 31, 1908. Entire volume offered. Stamps to title page, otherwise a fine and clean copy. Pp. 1-64. [Entire volume: (8), 408, (2), 12 pp]. First appearance of Poincaré's important paper in which he presented the first solution to the problem of the uniformization of curves - now know as The Uniformization Theorem. Clebsch and Riemann tried to solve the problem of the uniformization for curves. "In 1882 Klein gave a general uniformization theorem, but the proof was not complete. In 1883 Poincaré announced his general uniformization theorem but he too had no complete proof. Both Klein and Poincaré continued to work hard to prove this theorem but no decisive result was obtained for twent-five years. In 1907 Poincare (in the offered paper) and Paul Koebe independently gave a proof of this uniformization theorem...With the theorem on uniformization now rigorously established an improved treatment of algebraic functions and their integrals has become possible." Hamburg, Samuelem Heilium, 1726. 4to. In contemporary full calf with four raised bands and richly gilt spine. Small paper-label pasted on to top of spine. A few stains and scratches to boards. A nice and clean copy. (12), 1127 pp. + portrait. Second edition of this important early Hebrew-Chaldean-Latin biblical lexicon. Heinrich Opitz began his studies at the University of Wittenberg in 1662 and later transferred to the University of Jena, where he earned his Magister degree in 1665. Opitz then focused on oriental languages during stints in Leipzig and Hamburg before traveling to Kiel in 1667 to work as a private lecturer. He embarked on a journey through the Netherlands and England three years later to deepen his understanding of oriental languages, visiting libraries in Leiden, Utrecht, and London. Opitz later went to Oxford to study oriental manuscripts before settling in Jena, where he worked with the university's philosophical faculty. In 1675, he became a professor of Greek language in Kiel, adding a professorship in oriental languages in 1679. His career progressed, culminating in his promotion to Doctor and professor of theology in 1689, followed by his appointment as an Oberkonsistorialrat in 1704. His works on the Hebrew language and Bible were influential for many years.

First edition in the rare Offprint, now called "Sonderausgabe" instead of "Sonderabdruck", having separate printed title and separate pagination. From Weil 166 they are called "Sonderausgabe...". - Before 161 (up to 160) the Offprints do not have separate title and pagination (the pagination follows the numbering in the periodical). From 166 the Offprint has both separate printed title and pagination. - ( So Weil Nos 161-165 is still "Abdruck", but with separate title and pagination). He dealt with a four-dimensional space in the biased language of Euclidean geometry, the "content" of space was elliptic.
