Paris, J. Klostermann, 1810. Contemp. hcalf. Spine gilt. Slightly rubbed. A few scratches to binding. Small stamps on verso of titlepage. In: "Annales de Chimie, ou Recueil de Mémoires concernant la Chemie" Tome 75. 336 pp. a. 2 folded engraved plates. Some scattered brownspots. The papers: pp. 27-77, 129-175, 256-263, 264-273, 274-289 a. 290-316. First French version of Davy's "The Bakerian Lecture for 1809. On some new Electrochemical Researches, on various Objects, particularly the metallic Bodies, from the Alkalies, and Earth, and on some Combinations of Hydrogene. Read November 16, 1809.", together with the controversy papers by Davy and Gay-Lussac & Thenard."Mr. Davy having from the commencement of his electro-chemical researches, communicated the several steps of his progress to the Society (The Royal Society), takes the present opportunity of reporting the results of his further inquiries under four principal heads. First, on the nature of the metals of the fixed alkalis. Second, on the nature of Hydrogen and composition of ammonia. Thirdly, on the metals of the earth; and Fourthly he makes a comparison between the antiphlogistic doctrine, and a modified phlogistic hypothesis."(Abstract). He further gives arguments for considering potassium and sodium, which he discovered in 1808, as a element.""Gay-Lussac had a slight rivalry between himself and the creation scientist Sir Humphry Davy. Davy was chemically preparing Potassium and Sodium through an electrical current, and this made Gay-Lussac and Thénard envious of his success. They too decided to perform the same task, but they had no battery at their disposal as Davy had, so they had to form another way to chemically prepare the two elements. In 1808, they used a red-hot iron fused to potash, the water-soluble form of a manufactured salt containing potassium, to perform this task, a method that Davy admitted had its advantageous qualities. Gay-Lussac and Thénard were successful in preparing Potassium, and continued to make a full analysis of its chemical properties, and began to use it for their own experiments. In 1809, Davy performed the same task, using it to reduce Boron in Boracic acid."

If I all it a new force it is not my meaning that it is independent of the electrochemical relations of matter, but on the contrary I can only assume that it is a special kind of manifestation of these. So long as its nature and relations are unknown it will be convenient to considerit a new force, and to give it a name."(Berzelius).Parkinson "Breakthroughs", 1836 C.The issue contains furthermore two importent papers by the founder of modern organic cemeistry, Auguste Laurent "Sur l'Acide Naphtalique et ses Combinaisons", pp. 113-125 and "Théorie des Combinaisons Organiques", pp. 125-151. Offprints from "Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences", Vol. 39, No. 8, 1953 & "The Astrophysical Journal", Vol. 116, No. 1, July, 1952.Two library stamps to front wrappers, otherwise both fine and clean. Pp. (2), 145-163; Pp. 737-43. First printing of Neyman and Scott's two influential papers in which they present their theory of the spatial distribution of galaxies which is based on four main assumptions: 1, Galaxies occur only in clusters. 2, The numbers of galaxies varies from cluster to cluster to cluster. 3, The distribution of galaxies within a cluster is also subject to a probabilistic law. 4, The distribution of cluster centers in space is subject to a probabilistic law described as quase-uniform."Neyman’s major research efforts at Berkeley were devoted to several large-scale applied projects. These included questions regarding competition of species (with T. Park), accident proneness (with G. Bates), the distribution of galaxies and the expansion of the universe (with C.D. Shane and particularly Elizabeth Scott, who became a steady collaborator and close companion), the effectiveness of cloud seeding, and a model for carcinogenesis. Of these, perhaps the most important was the work in astronomy, where the introduction of the Neyman-Scott clustering model brought new methods into the field." (DSB).

JOULE, J.P. (JAMES PRESCOTT) - ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTENT IMPROVEMENTS OF THE STEAM-ENGINE.
Herman H. J. Lynge & Søn A/S
lyn47108
(London, Taylor and Francis, 1862). 4to. No wrappers as extracted from "Philosophical Transactions" 1862 - Vol. 151. Pp. 133-160, 1 large textillustration. First appearance of Joule's paper in which he describes his importent improvement of the Steam-Engine, using the principles of the first law of thermodynamics which he himself helped to establish."In addition, numerous other researches stand to Joules credit -- the work done in compressing gases and the thermal changes they undergo when forced under pressure through small apertures (with Lord Kelvin), the change of volume on solution, the change of temperature produced by the longitudinal extension and compression of solids, etc. It was during the experiments involved by the first of these inquiries that Joule was incidentally led to appreciate the value of surface condensation in increasing the efficiency of the steam engine. A new form of condenser was tested on the small engine employed, and the results it yielded formed the starting-point of a series of investigations which were aided by a special grant from the Royal Society, and were described in an elaborate memoir presented to it on the 13th of December 1860 (the paper offered). His results, according to Kelvin, led directly and speedily to the present practical method of surface-condensation, one of the most important improvements of the steam engine, especially for marine use, since the days of James Watt. Joule died at Sale on the 11th of October 1889."(NNDB)
