Among his teachers were neo-Kantian philosopher Ernst Cassirer, mathematician David Hilbert, and physicists Max Planck, Max Born, and Arnold Sommerfeld. Reichenbach received his degree in philosophy from the Friedrich-Alexander University of Erlangen-Nürnberg in 1915 with a dissertation on the theory of probability titled Der Begriff der Wahrscheinlichkeit für die mathematische Darstellung der Wirklichkeit (The Concept of Probability for the mathematical Representation of Reality), published in 1916. Between 1917 and 1920, while he was working as a physicist and engineer, Reichenbach attended Albert Einstein's lectures on the theory of relativity at Berlin. He was fascinated by the theory of relativity and in a few years published four books about this subject: The Theory of Relativity and A Priori Knowledge (1920),Axiomatization of the Theory of Relativity (1924), From Copernicus to Einstein (1927), and The Philosophy of Space and Time (1928). In 1920 he began teaching at the Technische Hochschule at Stuttgart as private docent.During his stay in Turkey he published The Theory of Probability (1935). In 1938 he moved to the United States, where he became professor at the University of California at Los Angeles." (DSB)

- Bibl. Danica II:108. - Poggendorff I:1314 (the German edition from 1758).

lyn35775
Amsterdam, North-Holland, 1966. 8vo. Publishers full cloth with dust jacket. Both in fine condition. Previous owners signature to front free end paper.Otherwise completely clean throughout. A fine copy. First edition of this foundational work in mathematics. In this book Robinson gave the first rigorous formulation of Analysis using infinitesimals. Both Leibniz and Newton had used the notion of infinitesimals when they developed the Differentail and Integral Calculus in the 17th century. As Leibniz argued the theory of infinitesimals implies the introduction of ideal numbers which might be infinitely small or large compared to the real numbers. However, neither he nor his disciples and succesors were able to give a rational development leading up to a system of this sort. As a result, the theory of infinitesimals gradually fell into disrepute and was replaced by eventually by the classical theory of limits. Robinson was the first to show that Leibniz's ideas in fact can be fully vindicated and that they lead to a fruitful approach to classical Analysis. He coined his model "Non-Standard Anlysis".

Clean and fine, but punched in inner margins after cords, no loss of text. First printing of this paper in which Poulsen describes his invention of the "TELEGRAPHON", THE FIRST magnetic sound recorder. The Telegraphone was shown, but not operated at the Paris Exposition in 1900 and obtained a Grand Prix."The magnetic recording was demonstrated in principle as early as 1898 by Valdemar Poulsen in his telegraphone. Magnetic wire recording, and its successor, magnetic tape recording, involve the use of a magnetizable medium which moves past a recording head. An electrical signal, which is analogous to the sound that is to be recorded, is fed to the recording head, inducing a pattern of magnetization similar to the signal. A playback head (which may be the same as the recording head) can then pick up the changes in the magnetic field from the tape and convert them into an electrical signal."(Wikepedia).The issue contains further Max Planck's paper "Kritik zweier Sätze des Hrn. W. Wien", pp. 764-766, and Ångstrøm "Ueber die Bedeutung des Wasserdampfes und der Kohlensäure bei Absorption der Erdatmosphäre.", pp. 720-732.Shiers "Early Television" no 289.

This report is primarely an account of what had been done during the century. However Hilbert reworked all of this earlier theory and gave a new, elegant and powerfull methods of securing these results. He had begun to create new ideas in algebraic number theory from about 1892 on and one of the new creations on Galoisian number fields was also incorporated in the report." Stimulated by this work he studied the reactions of other gases to see whether there were other simple relationshipas, and in 1808 he announced the la of combining volumes, which is now known as GAY-LUSSAC'S LAW, This generalization, obviously connected with some fundamental property of matter, was in part responsible for Avogadro's hypothesis."(Leicester & Klickstein).Parkinson "Breakthroughs", 1809 C. - Leicester & Klickstein "A Source Book in Chemistry" pp. 292 ff.
