Lovejoy claims that such a dualism, as opposed to the views of Idealism or other forms of Realism, is rooted in our human nature, and as such it can be validated by philosophical reflection upon this nature. With the ownership signature of Samuel Skulsky, the famous Jewish philosopher of science and logic.

Kjøbenhavn (Copenhagen), Andr. Fred. Høst, 1850. 8vo. Bound in a beatiful later half-morocco binding with richly gilt spine. (Anker Kysters Eftf. 1971). Spine slightly faded. Scattered brownspots, otherwise internally clean. Printed on vellum paper. X,190;XII,206 pp. First edition of Oersted's main work on natural philosophy. Oersted is universally known for his discovery of Electro-Magnetism in 1820. Afterwards he went on to write a number of important philosophical works on natural philosophy and empiricism, of which he considered "Aanden i Naturen" as his main work. The work is found printed on 2 sorts of paper, common- and vellum paper, the present copy being on vellum. Both Hans Christian Andersen and Søren Kierkegaard admit to having been influenced by the writings of Oersted. "He was an enthusiastic follower of the "Naturphilosophie" school in Germany, whose main object was the unification of physical forces, thus producing a monistic theory of the universe. It was to further this purpose that Oersted sought in actual phenomena the electro-magnetic identity of which he had already convinced himself on metaphysical grounds" (Percy H. Muir in Printing and The Mind of Man). The copy once belonged to the renowned Danish book collector Gustav Philipsen (1853-1925) and carries his exlibris.

Leipzig, Grosse & Gleditsch, 1728. 4to. In: " Acta Eruditorum Anno MDCCXXVIII". The entire volume offered in contemporary full vellum. Hand written title on spine. A yellow label pasted on to top of spine. Two small stamps to title-page and free front end-paper. Library label to pasted down front free end-paper. As usual with various browning to leaves and plates. Pp. 125-27. [Entire volume: (2), 562, (32), + six engraved plates, thereby lacking one]. First printing of German theolog Christoph Matthäus Pfaff's publication of a Leibniz letter who's intention was to prove that Leibniz regarded the Theodicy-problem as a philosophical mind-game (lusus philosophi) without any substantial content. Shortly after Leibniz's death, rumors and gossip about his religious insincerity were spread through France and Germany by the clergyman Christian Matthaeus Pfaff. He even claimed to be in possession of a letter from Leibniz in which the latter had confessed this [that it was a game of reconciling a deterministic, optimistic system with revealed religion, without real commitment or success in either] to him. Pfaff stirred up high expectations with his repeated announcement that he was on the verge of publishing the letter, but he always found some excuse not to though. (JOLLEY, The Cambridge Companion to Leibniz, P. 468)An excerpt of the letter was eventually published, which, as Pfaff states, questions Leibniz view on the Theodicy. The Theodicy, a term coined by Leibniz in his book "Essais de Théodicée sur la bonté de Dieu, la liberté de l'homme et l'origine du mal" which appeared in 1710 with numerous editions thereafter, was widely read, but Leibniz did not regard the book as a very full or adequate expression of his thoughts, and he seemed to have hoped that someone else would assume the burden of collecting his scattered writings after his death so as to make him better understood.

Berlin, Springer, 1930. 8vo. In contemporary half cloth with gilt lettering to spine. In "Zeitschrift für Physik", Bd. 61, 1930. Entire volume offered. Stamp to title page, otherwise fine and clean. VIII, 878 pp. First appearance of Bloch's seminal paper in which he introduced the concept of magnons as the elementary excitations in ferromagnetic crystals. The concept of Magnon was introduced in order to explain the reduction of the spontaneous magnetization in a ferromagnet. At absolute zero temperature, a ferromagnet reaches the state of lowest energy, in which all of the atomic spins (and hence magnetic moments) point in the same direction. As the temperature increases, more and more spins deviate randomly from the common direction, thus increasing the internal energy and reducing the net magnetization. If one views the perfectly magnetized state at zero temperature as the vacuum state of the ferromagnet, the low-temperature state with a few spins out of alignment can be viewed as a gas of quasiparticles, in this case magnons.

Berlin, Julius Springer, 1921. 8vo. Entire volume 4 of "Zeitschrift für Physik" bound in contemporary black half cloth with gilt lettering to spine. Library stamp to title-page and traces of paper label pasted on to lower part of spine. Minor wear to extremities. A nice and clean copy. [Klein & Rosseland:] Pp. 46-51; [Meitner:] Pp. 146-56; [Coster:] Pp. 178-88; [Schrödinger:] Pp. 347-354. [Ladenburg:] Pp. 451-468. [Entire volume: IV, 476 pp.]. First printing of this collection of influential papers within 20th century physics. Klein and Rosseland's paper (ÜBER ZUSAMMENSTÖSE ZWISCHEN ATOMEN UND FREIEN ELEKTRONEN) created an entire new field of physics: Collisions of the second kind. Klein and Rosseland discovered that and electron in an excited state could jump to a lower state without radiation with the released energy being transferred to a free electron as kinetic energy. "Franck and Hertz had shown how collisions between atoms and free electrons could cause excitation of the atoms, involving the transition of an electron from one stationary state to another of higher energy, the difference being equal to the loss of energy of the free electron. Klein and Rosseland considered the equation as how this would influence the thermal equilibrium between the atomic systems and free electron when Einstein's considerations of 1917 on the statistical equilibrium between blackbody radiation and atoms were used." (Thorsen. The Penetration of Charged Particles Through Matter. P. 27.)Niels Bohr took a great interest in the paper and his correspondences reveal that he had great expectations regarding the utility of the concept of collisions of the second kind. Ladenburg's paper (DIE QUANTENTHEORETISCHE DEUTUNG DER ZAHL DER DISPERSIONSELEKTRONEN) is the first printing of the first step towards the formulation of a quantum-theoretic interpretation of dispersion (the Ladenburg-Equation). Ladenburg's results were later (1924) generalized by Kramers in his "The Law of dispersion and Bohr's Theory of Spectra.".

Berlin, Georg Reimer, 1861. 4to. As extracted from "Journal für die reine und angewandte Mathematik, 1861, band 58. Without backstrip. Fine and clean. Pp. 181-228. First printing of these two important papers on gravitational interaction from bodies, such pseudo-rigid bodies, thereby "opened a new direction", a direction which later inspired Riemann to turn his attention to the problem"Without the gravitational interaction from another body, such pseudo-rigid bodies havereceived attention in many references. The interest was initiated by Newton in Principia, where he showed that a spinning axi-symmetric self-gravitating body of ?uid that is rotating slowly about the symmetry axis will be oblate. Jacobi in 1834 extended the work of Newton, but also work of Maclaurin, to show that a self-gravitating ?uid also can take on ellipsoidal shapes. The solutions of Jacobi, Maclaurin and Newton were, however, still all rigid. In a frame rotating with the body the ?uid is stationary. Dirichlet and Dedekin, [in the present two papers], respectively, opened a new direction when they found a symmetry that applied to Jacobi's solution generated a new solution in which the body isstationary in shape but the ?uid particles follow elliptical paths in planes orthogonal to a principle axis of the ellipsoid. Dirichlet's paper inspired Riemann to turn his attention to the problem. He gave a classi?cation of the solutions of Dirichlet's equations for which the ellipsoidal shape of the body remains constant. At the heart of this classi?cation lies what is now known as Riemann's theorem: the angular velocity and circulation (i) lie in the same principle plane and (ii) if the angular velocity is parallel to a principle axis then the circulation vector must also lie along that same principle axis." (Kristiansen, The two-body problem of a pseudo-rigid body and a rigid sphere)
