[No place], 1902. Royal8vo. In the original printed wrapper. Uncut. Offprint from "The American Journal of Physiology", Vol. VIII, October 1, No. 1, 1902. With authors presentation inscription to top of front wrapper: "With compliments of / H. S. Jennings". A very fine and clean copy. Pp. 23-60. Scarce offprint with author's presentation inscription of this important paper on the stimuli of unicellar organisms. Jennings observed with with Max Verworn that the ciliated protozoan, Paramecium - oriented and swam toward the cathode in an electric current when it was already swimming, but did not respond in this way, and seemed not to respond at all, if it was quietly in contact with a solid object when the current was turned on.""Herbert Spencer Jennings was widely recognized and greatly respected not only as a pioneering biological investigator but also as a thinker, philosopher, and educator . He was a master of the art of setting forth simply, clearly, and vividly, in print and in public lectures, the current state of genetics and general biology and of recognizing and pointing out their implications for the general public and for specialists in various disciplines. "Herbert Spencer Jennings (1868-1947), American botanist who was trained at Illinois Normal School and the University of Michigan, then spent a year studying protozoans with Max Verworn at the zoological station in Naples. In the early twentieth century, Jennings began studying inheritance and evolution in protozoans and introduced new experimental methods for laboratory study. By 1920 he had left the laboratory to popularize genetics and harmonize the relationship between biology, religion, and the humanities.

(Leipzig), 1823. Wrappers blank. Uncut. Extracted from "Gilberts Annalen der Physik und der Physikalischen Chemie", Bd. 74, Jahrg. 1823, Achtes Stück, pp. (337-) 378. First and last leaves a bit browned. First edition of this importent paper where Fraunhofer analyzed diffration phenomena and interpretet them in terms of a wave theory of light, leading him to formulate the GRATING EQUATION. - "In the paper in 1823, Fraunhofer revealed his continued invstigation of diffraction gratings. Using a diamont point, he could rule up to 3,200 lines per Parish inch. He continued his study of the effect of oblique reays, developed formulations based on the wave conception, and calculated a revised set of wavelenghts for the major spectral lines. Thus, his earlier observations of the dark lines in the solar spectrum enabled him to make the highly precise measurements of dispersions; then his ude of the wave theory of light allowed him to derive, with suitable simplifications, the general formulation of the grating equation still in use today." (Reese V. Jenkins in DSB).

Aarhundredes Frihedsideer.

Pp. 393-407. With titlepage to vol. II. Clean and fine. Firs appearance of the paper in which De Romas describes his invention of the electrical kite."De Romas, who independently of Franklin hit on the electrical kite, seems to have proposed an experiment much like that of Marly in 1750 or 1751. He fiercely defended his independence against Priestly's insinuation that he merely improved upon Franklin's demonstrations...In fact de Romas drew his inspiration from the Bordeaux prize question of 1749 which, in turn, derived from Nollet's speculations."(Heilbron "Electricity in the 17th and 18th Centuries", p. 351).

Paris, Fuchs et Guillaume, An VIe. (1798). Contemp. hcalf. Spine gilt. Very slightly rubbed. Small stamps on verso of titlepage. In: "Annales de Chimie, ou Recueil de Mémoires concernant la Chemie" Tome 25. - 335,(3) pp., 2 engraved folded plates and 1 folded table..(the entire volume offered). Vauquelin's papers: pp. 21-32 a. pp. 194-204. Some brownspots to the first and last leaves, otherwise fine and clean. First printing of the papers in which Vauquelin describes and announces his discovery of Chromium. The first paper was simultaneously printed in Mem.de l'Institut. Because of its many coloured compounds Fourcroy and Haüy suggested the name 'chromium' for the new metal. (Greek, chroma-colour).In 1797, Vauquelin began his own studies of Siberian red lead. He was convinced that the mineral contained a new element. None of the elements then known could account for his results. He reported "a new metal, possessing properties entirely unlike those of any other metal." A year later, Vauquelin was able to isolate a small sample of the metal itself. He heated charcoal (nearly pure carbon ) with a compound of chromium, chromium trioxide (Cr 2 O 3 ). When the reaction was complete, he found tiny metallic needles of chromium metal. DSB XIII, p. 597 - Parkinson "Breakthrough" 1798 C.The volume contains other importent papers in the history of chemistry, Guyton "Examen de quelques propriétés du Platine" a. "Examen de quelques critiques de la nomenclature de chimistes francais", Chaptal "Observations sur la fabrication de l'acétite de cuivre (verd-de-gris) etc.
